The theft occurred at the * Congress Could (Continued from page one) alternative should^ the trains stop. * ' President Nixon, saying a nationwide rail strike could not be allowed, asked Congress Monday to approve a 45-day delay. Nixon already had exhausted all legal means to postpone a strike under the National Railway Labor Act. Underscoring the administration's concern, Transportation Secretary John A. Volpe held out the possibility troops would be used to run the railroads if Dennis went through with his threat to defy any congressional antistrike action. Request Rejected The White House Tuesday turned aside a request by Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield.and Sen. Jacob Jayits RrN.Y., to summon labor and management leaders to a forced negotiating session at the White House. Two main issues are involved in the dispute— money and work rules. A White House panel has recommended a 37 per cent pay increase over three years, coupled with changes in work rules that the railroads say promote inefficiency and feath-, erbedding. But the clerks immediately rejected the 37 per cent increase as too smalj, and all four unions said ] they would agree to no changes, in work rules, some of which date to the beginnings of railroading in the 19th century. Davis-Purdue Agriculture Center, a 623-acre research farm used in cow herd management studies. Officials said six Hereford cows, four crossbred heifers and six calves were missing from the farm about five miles north of here. The rest of the herd of 30 was found wandering along Indiana 1 near the farm. The missing animals had identifying marks or were branded, officials said. Horace Paarlberg, director of the PU farm program, said the animals were valued at about $3,000. Tire marks found at a barn led authorities to believe a truck was used to remove the animals. * Grim Season (Continued from page 3) bedspread.
