The former UCLA English teacher was all personality during the recent interview, fielding questions with humor and candor.

9 MOAB This is the greatest concentration of natural beauty around, exuded personable Roger Davis. Davis is one of the stars of ABC-TVii we'-' era series, Alias Smith and Jones now being shot on location around I enjoy taping the voices on commercials. Its a real chdnge-of-pace, Davis explained. We recently did 48 of them in a one-week period. i From the time he arrived in California with $13 in his pocket and no prospect for employment, to the starring role in Alias Smith and it was a big step for the personable blond.

Davis let interviewers in on some of the upcoming story lines in the series, explaining that just about the time the pair of outlaws, Joshua Smith and Kid Curry, are about to gain amnesty, which would no doubt bring an cad to the series, the governor is removed from office and they have to start the same procedure over again with the new governor. 9 'I' si When asked if he would continue the commercials now that he seems to have caught on in the Alias Smith and Jones series, he replied: Yes, the contract allows me to continue to do commercials. The recording studio is right here on the lot (referring to Universal Television) and we can run over and make the commercials during breads in filming. Davis was able, during this time, to take a part-time teaching fellowship at UCLA where he finished work for his masters in English' literature. It was while he was teaching freshman English at UCLA that jthe opportunity came up for a role in ABCs The Gallant Men series.

Where else can we go to find this kind of country? Davis asked. All this monumental beauty. Theres no. scenery like this any place in the country except around Moab. Produced for BC-TV by Universal Television, the western-adventure series will continue to alternate between the Moab area and studio production at Universal City, Calif.

Davis takes over the role of retired outlaw Hannibal Heyes following the recent death of Pete Duel. Davis had previously appeared in the series as a pleasant, smiling villain. The pair will have to continue finding honest means of supporting' themselves and promise to stay out of trouble, which is not without its haz-. ards, some of them funny. The blue-eyed, Kentucky-born actor Davis was r.odest, but at the same time proud of his success in the commercial field.

I like to do it. We dont even count the checks or the money. Im deeply involved in some real estate transactions, trying to put some, money away for the future, so that perhaps I can get back to classroom teaching. left the classroom for the sound stage and was hooked. He plugged along from TV; show.

to TV show, on the fringe but never hitting the big time. In the national viewing schedule the ABC-TV serios went up against the Flip Wilson Show during the past season. If we had not been against Flip, we would have been in the top five shows, commented Davis. I did a lot of testing for all kinds of roles, but all the producers seemed to want was a name, offered Davis. "We don't even count the checks and money anymore," says Roger Davis of his television commercial work.

Since he took over the role from the late Pete Duel, fan mail for Roger Davis has really picked up. I think response has been fantastic. We really appreciate it, and what is especially pleasing is that there has be al- Whai your time slot for the coming season nationally? Well be against All In The Davis mused. It should be a good counter program. 1 But for fans who feel fhey have heard Davis fer years, their ears are not playing tricks on them.
