nmnri nrpi nywnpa ywyftix ABC Scores MaJor TV Coup DESERET NEWS, Saturday, July 1 1 972 7 ER FiIms i By JAY LIVINGOOD, Editor, TEMPO Section HOLLYWOOD ABC-TV scored a major triumph for the coming season when the network announced acquisition of four major movie packages for its Sunday Night Movie. Kicking off the season will be Gold-finger, the Janies Bond thriller starring Sean Connery as Agent 007; and co-starring Honor Blackman. The premiere will be Sept. 17. The announcement of the film package was made by Martin Starger, ABC veep for programming, during a special press gathering.

The lineup of movies includes: Patton, True Grit, Lawrence of Arabia, The Odd Couple, Dr. Doolittle, Plaza Suite, and Taming of the Shrew. During a luncheon, I sat next to James E. Duffy, ABC prexy who exuded pleasure and confidence in scoring the coup over rival networks in the use of major films as programs. Duffy expressed the opinion that the other two networks were down-playing the use of feature films, a program in past years that they highly touted, because ABC-TV had tied up the most and available film packages.

Duffy said the network planned at the moment to run the feature films in their entirety during one evening, rather than over two consecutive nights or weekends. Duffy admitted there may be some trouble clipping offensive language from some of the films, but they will be made acceptable for Sunday evening family viewing. Of greatest concern to questioning television editors was the prologue of Patton, which starred controversial George C. Scott. The Patton prologue used numerous four-letter words and other offensive language, but Duffy felt it could be satisfactorily edited without hurting the context of the film story.

When asked about the cost of the big film package, Duffy paused, quickly calculated figures in his head, and estimated that the total package would run be-f een $55 and $60 million, give or take a million. This will place the cost of a minute commercial air time at $150,000, close to that of the Super Bowl, explained Duffy. The ABC-TV film package appears to be the cream of the crop. True Grit stars John Wayne in the movie for which he received his only Oscar.

Lawrence of Arabia, picked up seven of the golden statues, including ne for best picture. Dr. Doolittle a magic piece of fluff for the children, stars Rex Harrison. But ABC-TV isnt going to stop with their monumental film package. Theyre going for quality.

Starger announced the net was preparing a special of Long Days Journey Into Night, by Eugene ONeill. We are committed to presenting the very best in drama for television, commented Starger, and we are proud to present an original production of this John Wayne (True Peter O'Toole Of and George C.
