Waitress Uniform Swindle Charged Police yesterday received complaint on an apparent waitress-uniform swindle. Mrs. Mildred Quarles, 603 W. Hill who works at Ward's Tavern, 208 State told police a man who gave his name as Carl Jolley, Knoxville, took $3.50 deposit for one uniform March 26. She said she became suspicious afterward when a customer told her another waitress in Knoxville had been swindled by a man answering the same description.

Mrs. Quarles told The News-Sentinel she talked to the other waitress and learned that she had given the same man a $10 deposit on two uniforms two weeks before. Mrs. Quarles said the other waitress telephoned the Chicago company the man claimed to represent and was told the man did not work for them. The man had given her an order blank signed Talley, Middlesboro, Ky." No such name appears in the Middlesboro telephone directory.

Both waitresses were told the price of the uniforms was $598 each. However, Mrs. Quarles said the other waitress did receive one uniform from another company which cost her another $9.98. Mrs. Quarles described the man as about 60 years old, five feet, three inches tall, 140 pounds, with graying hair.
