ance department; expanded its custodial and cafe- teria staffs; and expanded its curriculum. The notions for school expansion dates back to 1947, when then superintendent Edward Schneider convinced the school board to purchase a lot of vacant land known as the Ingersol tract and rear lots which were originally proposed for housing. With the new land, property total went from its original 11 acres to 45. Schneider recalled that early on, much of the develop- ment of this new land was Faculty members worked weekends and holidays to clear the land of trees and brush. In 1949, work began on a new football in its cur- rent location.

Students who volunteered to help remove stones and rocks from the were rewarded with a day off from class. Wooden bleachers, which served the school for 30 years, were built with help from James Worden, head of the Industri- al Arts department. Early in the 50s and after studying enrollment trends in the three sending districts, Schneider brought facilities expansion studies to the school board. He reported that by September 1956, stu- dent population would be far beyond building capacity. The board decided on a plan to double the capacity of the school, from 700 to 1,400 students.

Voters approved the bonds, totaling $970,000, and work was completed on the by September 1956. Three years later, another addition was planned. The three-story a $1,200,000 project, was opened in 1961. The new addi- tion increased the capacity to 2,000 students. Officials had investigated constructing a second high school at the time but scrapped the plan citing the smallness of the district, lack of land available, and cost.

The game was against Caldwell a 20- 0 loss. Swisher pointed out that a notable member of the Hornets squad was Jack Masklee, who is the former Mayor of Totowa. School 3 will ease crowding BY TOM BOUD TODAY Staff Writer LITTLE FALLS The township board of education is looking for $4.87 million to renovate School No.

3 in an effort to relieve school over- crowding. The proposal will be decided by local residents in a referendum vote current- ly slated for Dec. 5. According to plans, School No. 3 now leased to the Phoenix Center would house grades three and four.

School No. 2 on Long Hill Road would handle kinder- garten through second grade, whereas School No. 1 on Stevens Avenue would have grades five through eight, township Superintendent of Schools Bruce de Lyon said. School No. 3 would only take two grade levels due to its capacity, which is around 15 rooms.

To offset the expense, the school district is seeking state funding. Little Falls is eligible for up to 40 percent assistance from Trenton since Gov. Christie Whitman recent- ly approved an $8.6 billion school construction package. Concerning hiring, de Lyon said opening School No. 3 would require more support personnel.
