GTI budget asks 94 percent tax rate increase this year By JOHN KREROWICZ Staff Writer The Gateway Technical Institute administration is proposing a 94 percent increase in the tax rate or about $5 12 more on a $50000 home for 1903-84 The total GTI portion of the tax bill on that home next year would be $5961 if the GTI board adopts the proposed $22 5 million budget The board will review the budget Thursday May 19 and con sider it for final approval Oh June 16 A public hearing on the budget will be at 7 Tuesday May 31 on the Racine campus i The budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 must be received by the state VocationalTechnical Adult Education board in Madison by June 30 The proposed budget Includes a 13 8 percent tax levy increase from $10 26 million to $11 67 mil lion Total revenues are expected to increase 12 2 percent to the $22 5 million figure If the GTI board decides not to purchase a new computer this year the tax on a $50000 home would increase $3 35 or 616 percent to $57 84 on a $21 7 million budget A school Committee is reviewing a report on buying new data processing equipment Administrators prepared separate figures should the equipment not be purchased The figures are based on estimates that the three-county district's assessed valuation will increase 4 percent to $9 79 billion Charles Plummer director of administrative services said the budget is within the 9 5 percent cost controls and would probably give Gateway the second lowest mill rate of the 16 voctech districts Wisconsin the same position as this year Plummer told the Audit and Fiscal Committee which briefly reviewed the budget on Tuesday that a new cost control bill in the Legislature could mean the $22 5 million proposed budget would exceed cost controls by $900000 He said the bill would eliminate present controls and tie them to the Consumer Price Index now at 5 percent Plummer said if the hill is passed he believe it would be he would recommend long-term been named to the Circuit Court seat held by the late Judge John Malloy Schroeder will take over the post as soon as he can wrap up his private law practice Schroeder 7700 Third Ave is vacationing or nearly $150000 annually until the bonds expire in the year 2012 The Water Board Tuesday approved the refinancing plan It also agreed to rent its building at 6500 67th St to the Hammett Chiropractic Clinic for the next five years The board moves Saturday to the Civic Center Building 812 56th St The utility borrowed $12 million for the sewerage treatment plant at 13 5 percent It will borrow $14 million at the current lower rate of approximately 9 percent to 9 5 percent to pay the indebtedness The market is in a favorable cycle that may not last much past Thanksgiving consultants said The
