EX-GOP SOLON COMMITS SUICIDE PITTSBURGH. Dec. 12-(1NS) Former Republican Congressman John McDowell, who worked closely with Vice President Nixon in cracking the Alger Hiss case, committed suicide last night at his home in the Pittsburgh suburb of Wilkinsburg. Wilkinsburg police said the former lawmaker shot himself in the head with a pistol shortly be-1 fore midnight. He was 55 -and reportedly ailing from cancer.

It was McDowell, a free-swing- ng member of the House Un- American committee, who used his knowledge as a bird-watcher to link Whitaker Chambers to Hiss. Chambers off-handedly mentioned seeing a prothonotary warbler and Hiss, maware of his accuser's testimony, also remarked on seeing he bird during his' walks.
