Often Hoaxes Reporter Tells of Few Who Couldn't Wait to Act Until They Got Before Camera By BILL PORTER NEA Service Staff Correspondent Hollywood This is about the only place in -the world where a person is applauded for pulling a fast one Several of the top ranking stars in the business got their starts from lies and connivances which are merely amusing now that the misrepresentations have been made good Nobody cares for example that the Norwegian Sigrid Gurie was born in Flatbush or that she has been tilting in court with a previously unmentioned husband Sam Goldwyn and a few million fans still think a good actress A Dubuque la girl named Evelyn Kies able to crash the movies until she followed the advice of Bob Cummings At his suggestion she went to England for six months developed an accent changed her name and returned to Hollywood as Margaret Lindsay an English actress She received a part in the cast of The reason Bob Cummings was so sure the trick would work was that he had done precisely the same thing a few years before More Adepts At Little-White-Lying Claudette Colbert fibbed her way into her first leading role by saying she had three stage experience Then later when her career moving fast enough she approached Producer A1 Woods him and said she was from the Isle of Jersey Overjoyed at seeing someone from his home land Woods gave her a job which led to her success on Broadway and then to Hollywood Gary Cooper received his contract with Sam Goldwyn by filling out a questionnaire on which he listed as experience lead in That entirely untrue because as an extra in that picture he had led a dog across the stage on a leash When Katharine Hepburn first came to Hollywood she drove about in a Hispano-Suiza and posed as a $16000000 heiress A curious reporter later discovered that there was no fortune and that she rented the car by the day While clerking in a department store Greta Garbo told about her experience as a millinery model and received a part in an advertising film The film paved the way for her first dramatic role Miriam Hopkins Gets Caught Short Miriam Hopkins walked up to a man whowas rehearsing the chorus for the Box and asked Mr Hassard Short been around? He told me to be sure to see him about a the man replied Hassard But she got the job When Marsha Hunt arrived in Hollywood she was met at the train by a photographer friend of hers He shot several pictures of her which were passed around to the studios and newspapers with the story that the wealthy Miss Hunt was visiting Hollywood but that she even consider a movie offer Studios began to clamor for her and she was finally signed by Paramount Ruth Rogers Paramount player came to Hollywood and spread the story around that she had been at the State Theater in Seattle for over two years What Miss Rogers failed to mention was that her connection with that theater had been in the capacity of ticket seller A Little Naughty But Effective Loretta Young once answered a telephone call from Mervyn Leroy who wanted her sister Polly Ann for a role in but Her sister was out of town so Loretta went instead got by the studio gates by saying Miss and convinced Leroy she could pinch-hit for her sister She was then 13 For years Charlie Judels hoaxed his way into almost every role he played His specialty is dialect He would pose as a German Frenchman Italian Greek Spaniard or Swede and give newsreel man in Hot to has suggested that his team of office-boy players call themselves the Office Your Health By DR MORRIS FISHBEIN Editor Journal of the American Medical Association and of Hygela the Health Magazine Investigations made among students coming into one of the larger universities in the United States indicated that only about one-fourth had had a fairly recent vaccination against smallpox Among physicians generally the impression is prevalent that people are not availing themselves of this protective device of modern medicine as they should avail themselves if smallpox is to be kept in the realm of controllable diseases Since men have lost their fear of smallpox they have become inclined to neglect protective measures with the likelihood that smallpox may yet reappear as a virulent disease affecting large numbers of people and reaping a toll of thousands of deaths before modern preventive medicine can again bring it under control The history of smallpox goes back deeply into antiquity There seems to be evidence that it occurred as far back as the 12th century Certainly it was present among the ancient Greeks and Romans and there were epidemics in France and Italy in the 6th century The available records indicate that smallpox reached America in 1520 when a Negro slave with the disease came into Mexico with the troops of Cortez The epidemic thus created destroyed the lives of more than three and a half million people The records in Massachusetts -indicate that the disease first appeared in that state in 1633 and was prevalent in Boston in 1649 Now today as the result of the widespread use of vaccination against smallpox few people ever see a case and the human being who goes about with the scars of smallpox on his face is considered to be a monument to his own neglect of proper measures for health Every child should be vaccinated as a baby and again when it enters' school in the sixth year Whenever the disease appears as an outbreak in any community everyone should be vaccinated at once if he has not had a successful vaccination within three or four years Everyone exposed in any manner to smallpox should certainly be vaccinated Any failure of mankind in the mass to avail themselves of this well-established measure will lead unquestionably to an increasing incidence of this disease throughout the United States as indeed there: has already been an increasing in- cidence in a few places Studio Buys Story of '400' Avenue romantic comedy by Edgar MacGregor and France Romer has been purchased by Milton Bren executive vice-
