Page 10 THE TIPTON (INDIANA) DAILY TRIBUNE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1970 "Unity Can Only Come Through Suffering," Pope Paul Tells Crowd By BARRY JAMES SYDNEY, Australia (UPIH Pope Paul Vi told a crowded meeting of 11 Christian faiths tonight that ecumenical, unity can only be achieved through suffering and that history cannot be written off overnight. A radical Protestant minister was ejected from the services attended by 3,000 persons in Sydney's Tow Hall when "he rose to ids feet and silently displayed anti-Cutholic slogans painted on his shirt. Outside, a small band of militant Protestants marched in silent protest, one riding a donkey. Tonight's speech ended the last full day of Paul's visit to Australia, the first by a Pope. He leaves Thursday for Jakarta, Hong Kpng and Colombo, Ceylon, to end a nine-day trip that will take him 25,000 miles. He appeared fit and rested despite the arduous journey. In a morning devoted to the young and elderly, the Pope gave a qualified endorsement of the worldwide youth protest movements but warned against any wholesale rejection of the lessons of history. He delivered the homily at a special yough Mass at Randwick Race Course attended by 150,000 youth. He told them there are ways and means of seeking reform but: "If you turn back on yourselves, if you set yourself up as supreme judges of your truth, if you reject the past wholesale, then the world ol tomorrow will not be noticeably better, even if ih is different." School girls, many in miniskirts, fanned themselves with their hats. The Pope stood hatless, the sun reflecting from his balding head, apparently impervious to the heat and discomfort. In a tour of a convent this morning he told elderly priests, "if age or sickness has caused you to retire from the active ministry you know that the exercise of your priesthood has not thereby substantially diminished; it has only changed its expression." The service was boycotted by the Rev. Marcus L. Lmane Anglican archbishop of Syfney, who said "the Roman Catholic church continues to adhere to certain dogmas which are totally alien to the whole character of the New Testament." However, other Anglican leaders did attend. increased Money Supply To Be Made Available ; WASHINGTON (UPI) -The Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) announced today tentative plans to begin in February to support the conventional mortgage market, a move intended to increase the supply of money available for home loands. jThe announcement followed by one day a cut in hhe interesl ceiling for FHA to VA mortgage loans from 8'••> to 8 per cent, the first reduction in a decade. . FNA ; a government-spawned private corporation, has been buying FHA and VA. mortgages since the' 1930s to stabilize the market and provide additional . money to mortgage lenders that can be used to make new loans. I The corporation , announced plans to move into the conventional mortgage market. under a bill approved by Cmngress earlier this year. Conventional mortgages are home loans not insured or guuranteed by the - government. . ! FNMA President Oak'ey Hun ter predicted that the association's participation would expand the funds available for conventional mortgages, under which a majority of American buy their homes. The buyer usually must be prepared to make a much higher down payment for a conventional loan than under the government-insured programs. Conventional mortgages usually call for at least one third down. Hunter .said FNMA will buy only conventional- mortgages for between 710,000 and $33,000 in single family homes. • Housing Secretary George Rooney and Veterans Administrator Donald E. . Johnson announced the reduction in the FHA and VA loan ceiling. It means that the interest charge over a 30-year period on a $25,000 mortgage backed by the federal housing administration or Veterans Afministration would be reduced by $3,105. Unemployment Claims Reach Eight Year High INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) - The number of jobless persons filing claims for unemployment insurance reached 65,081 last week, the highest in Indiana in nearly eight years. It was the biggest total, according to director John F. Coppes of the Indiana Employment Security Division, since January, 1963, when 68,044 claims were processed. Many of them were automotive workers no. longer on strike but not back at work and employes of a large plant which was on a one-week shutdown. Smaller layoffs were reported in steel, construction and manufacturing industries.. Coppes said that except for cutbacks in the construction industry, which always is slowed by winter weather, the new laymffs appeared to be "temporary and short-time." However, there was also a build-up ih the number of continued claims filed—by those out of work a week or mrre. Last week, nearly 4000 continued claims were filed and 600 claimants had been out of work long enough to draw all the weekly payments for which they were eligible.
