THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1970 Foreign News Commentary THE TIPTON (INDIANA) DAILY TRIBUNE i By HENRY SHAPIRO MOSCOW (UPI) -if the alleged memoirs of former Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev being published abroad have generated a global sensation, other memoirs exist which someday will prove infinitely more interesting. Among them are the reminiscences of Josef V. Stalin himself and those of his right- hand man, the 80 year-old Vyacheslav M. Mmlotov, one time premier, foreign minister and one of the few surviving old Bolsheviks whose career spanned more than half a century. No official information can be obtained about Stalin's memoirs. But in the past few years there have been intimations that the man who for 30 years was the absolute ruler of his country put down at least part of his extraordinary experience on paper. Dead men tell no tales—but when and if Stalin's memoirs are made public an interesting new light will be shed on Khrushchev's indictment of his onetime patron and associate. Molotov in Retirement Molotov alone who is still alive and who actually battled against Krhsuchehv's ruthless de-Stalization campaign can assume the role of Stalin's advocate and defend his late comrade. In complete retirement since 1961. Molotov, who early in his political life was described by Vladimir L Lenin as the "best filing clerk in Russia," has an elephantine memory and has been walking the corridors of supreme Sovist power since the 1917 revolution. He was reported reliably to have completed his memoirs about two years ago.,, The late Jmhn Foster Dulles once described Molotov us the ablest foreign minister of this age. Tales He Could Tell The tales he could tell would dwarf everything Khrushchev said into relative insignificance; But the taciturn Molotov has not taken anymne into hi: confidence and his memoirs are unlikely to see daylight until after his death, if then. Curiously enough, there probably would have been no memoirs at all if there had been no Khrushchev, Memoirs in Stalin's lifetime were inconceivable. The attempts at liberalization and democratization of the early Khrushchev era encouraged the writing of reminis- censes. In his devastating indictment . of Stalin at the 20th and 22nd Communist party congresses.of 1956 and 1961, Khrushchev requested and encouraged o'd Page b Bolsheviks and military leaders who had been victimized by Stalin to shar their experiences with the people. jWORK WONDERS) jj j^^^ ^SUUIM 5^ ^zfut^ FRIDAY NIGHT CHRISTMAS anners variety stores DISCOUNT PRICES Our EVERY Friday nite DISCOUNT SALES in December from 9 to 11 pm is just another way of helping you. mm • • o I DEAR CUSTOMER: I 1 STRETCH YOUR 1 CHRISTMAS DOLLAR 1 VARIETY SELECTION MERRY CHRISTMAS THANK YOU FOR * SHOPPING IN 9 YOUR TOWN Watch for these badges of appreciation USE OUR EASY LAY A-WAY PLAN Boxed Christmas Cards reg. $1.00 Christmas Gift Wrap reg. 970 6 rolls Jig Bag 0' Bows reg. 670 only SUPER VALUE!
