to life the death -sentence of John Randolph matricide Randolph made a desperate appeal for clemency after the courts had refused to change his sentence The With the dscovery of the revolver believed to have been used in the killing of James Sears and Madalynne Latimer his fiancee in the North Howland avenue road last October officials have begun to thread anew a theory of escape which the murderer may have used Until the present time it was the belief of those in charge of the investigation that the murderer fled north from the scene On the night of October 14 1925 according to the story which has prevailed until the present time the 'urderer drove out to the scene of the crime found Sears and his sweetheart parked ori the side of the road about a mile north of the intersection of the North Howland aVenue road and then perpetrated his gruesome 8cfc Had to Fight to Kill There was evidence of a terrific struggle in the Sears roadster before the pair was waylaid by their assailant Blood was found thick on the seat the floor and on the side of the car The clothing on Sears was mussed indicating that he had struggled as long as there was-life in him The clothing had also been ruffled but there had been no sign of a criminal attack the physician who examined both bodies reported After shooting a bdllet through left jaw and shooting the glrl in the forehead both shots being fired at close range the murderer probably jerked the bodies from the automobile dragged them five feet Into the ditch on the east side' of the road stretched them out and covered them with matted grass Pushed Auto on Ahead The next step was to push the automobile a heavy roadster up the road about a half mile to cover up the spot where the bodies were hid- den From this point on the new developments add to the story built up by officials The discovery of the gun under the culvert beneath the North Shore tracks by tw(flve-year old George Cudahy last Saturday which information was revealed by police on Thursday showed that the murderer walked more than a quarter of a mile south cf the point the bodies were hidden on the North Howland avenue road to the Somers road Here he walked around a fence running parallel to the road separating the North Shore right of way from the highway On the east side of this fence run the graded tracks of the railroad and under the tracks about a hundred yards north of the main highway Is a gully over which i3 built concrete culvert Buried Gun Under Water It is evident from the position in whih the gun was found by the boy that the murderer took extra pains to see that the revolver was covered completely At that time the water in the creek which ran under the culvert was several inches deep The next moves form the greatest points of conjecture in the minds of the officials Hid he get into his automobile and drive north along the road beyond the Pike Creek bridge and then continue on towards Racine? Or did he turn his car towards the south and drive either east or on the Somers road? According to testimony given at the time of the inquest Christ Birch who lives on a farm near the intersection of the North Howland avenue road and the Somers road he heard four shots fired in rapid succession But he heard no autos going by his place on the Somers road for sometime after that This fact gave the officials reason to believe that the assailant fled north on the Howland road Clue Under Pike River Bridge A clue was believed to have been picked up under the Pike river bridge about two miles north of the scene of the murder on the same road Here automobile tracks were found under the bridge as if to show that a car had driven oil the road under the bridge and there stopped and then backed out on to the road again At first it was believed that the murderer had washed his hands under the bridge but the evidence of blood supposedly found on the side of the bridge was too weak to give this theory any credence The murderer must have had spme sort of a car in order to get out to this out-of-the-way spot in the country but what kind of acar or where it was driven Is a matter of mystery Renews Moron Theory The painstaking thoroughness of the entire crime lends itself to the relief that a moron might have been Triplicated Everything connected the murder was so systematic ha there is even a possibility that might have been be foreland ICOJTINUED ON PAGE at Coates
