During the 1940s the German student resistance group Weisse Rose, opposed the Nazi Euthanasia programs. These Students used the password "White Rose" to symbolize a Christian spirit which loved everything that was noble and beautiful and opposed evil. Today the Rose has been chosen to symbolize the unborn child. It is also a time of year for adults to take control of situations so these joyous occasions don't turn into tragic ones. According to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, three facts that adults need to be aware of are: 1. It is a crime to sell or give alcoholic beverages to anyone under 21 (even your own kids). Penalties include a fine of $1,000 for the first minor, $2,500 for every other minor and up to a year in jail. 2. Minors convicted of attempting to purchase, purchasing, transporting, or possessing alcohol, lying about their age or carrying a fake ID card to obtain alcohol will lose their driver's license for 90 days and face fines of up to $500, plus court costs. For those under 16 penalties are delayed until the child reaches 16. 3. Minors under age 18 convicted of Driving under the Influence (DUI) are placed in the hands of juvenile authorities and the criminal court system. Police can arrest and detain juveniles for blood, breath, or urine testing without parental consent. Drinking drivers over age 18 face a fine of up to $5,000, a one year license suspension, 18 hours in jail, and attendance at a mandatory highway safety course. Serving alcohol to minors or driving under the influence of alcohol at any age are serious crimes that cause injury and death. Over 50 percent of all teenage drivers who are in car crashes have alcohol in their blood. What can parents do? 1. Talk to your kids about alcohol and the law. 2. Know about the effects of alcohol on a teenager's body, so you can explain why you want them to wait until after age 21 to decide whether or not to drink alcohol. 3. Know your child's friends. Get to know their parents. Set the same curfews and have similar rules, so one adolescent is not singled out for teasing. 4. It is important for kids to know you'll be awake waiting to talk with them when they return home. 5. Set a good example. If you drink as soon as you come in the door from work, take medication with alcohol or drive after you have had a drink, you can expect your child to do the same thing. Remember, your kids do as you do. 6. Plan alcohol-free parties with your teen. Make sure it is understood that you will be home and available if there is a problem. If they're going to a party at someone else's house, call those parents and confirm the invitation. Make sure they are as responsible as you. Ask if parents plan to supervise the party or if alcohol is permitted. If the party is not supervised, chances are alcohol will be present. Decline the invitation, if necessary. 7. Give kids the information they need to know to do the right thing. Talk to them about - how to refuse alcohol or a ride with an impaired driver without looking like a wimp. Encourage them to be the non-drinking designated driver wherever they go. 8. Set examples for your child to follow. Be a good role model. Being a parent is not an easy job by any means. Giving in to your' child is much easier sometimes than saying no. Punishing your child for breaking your rules or for breaking the law and enforcing that punishment when no one got hurt by the action is often not carried out. But, we as responsible adults must take a stand and teach our children to respect the law. It is better go put up with their anger at us for these rules and enforcement of them, than to sit at their bedside in the hospital after they have been in an alcohol related accident or worse yet to sit a' the funeral home to receive pec pies' condolences as we bury oui child. Don't confiise your kids with two sets of rules. Don't say you can't drink and drive and then allow them to drink in your home because you can supervise them and because you take their car keys and won't allow anyone to drive. Ask yourself what message am I sending to my child by my actions? Let's teach our children to become responsible adults, and keep them alive. Drunk Drivers: A National Disgrace Here's a global view of how other countries handle the situation. Australia The names of the local drivers are sent to the local newspaper and are printed under the heading, "he's drunk and in jail." ' Malaya The driver is jailed and if he is married, his wife is jailed too. Turkey. Drunk drivers are taken 20 miles away from town by the police and forced to walk back under escort. Norway Three weeks in jail at hard labor, one year loss of license. Second offense within five years, license revoked for life. Finland and Sweden Automatic jail for one year at hard labor. Costa Rica Police remove plates from car. Russia License revoked for life. England One year suspension, $250 fine and jail for one year. France Three year loss of license, one year in jail and $1,000 fine. Poland Jailed, fined and forced to attend political lecture. Bulgaria A second conviction results in execution. El Salvador Your first offense is your last execution by firing squad.
