2 Hazleton Standard-Speaker, Saturday, May 11, 1996 Obituaries Edith Marks, 83, served as PV school board president Joseph 'Socks' Holden, 83, prominent Schuylkill official president of the following organizations: Carbon County Head Start, Lansford Recreation Center, Coaldale Hospital Guild and the Carbon County Retired Teachers Association. Her teaching career began in the Lansford School District. When the Lansford School District and the Panther Valley School Districts formed a jointure, she continued teaching in the Panther Valley School District, where she taught French, English and creative writing. She was also a girls' tennis coach. She retired in 1977 after a 45-year career.

Mrs. Marks served on the school board from 1981-89, and was a former Lansford Borough Council member. She was also a trustee for Carbon-Lehigh Community College. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her husband, William A. Marks, on Dec.

4, 1952. Surviving are son David J.S., Allentown, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Edward J. McNamara Funeral Home, 3 E.

Bertsch Lansford, with the Rev. Debbie Derby officiating. Interment will be in Grand Army Republic Cemetery, Summit Hill. Friends may call at the Edward J. McNamara Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Zaylskus, 89, of 15 S. Nice Frackville, founder of J.Z. Appliances, Frackville, died Thursday afternoon at Ashland Regional Medical Center, Fountain Springs. Born in Shenandoah, he was a son of the late Frank and Catherine (Litvinas) Zaylskus. He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a life-member and also a charter member of the Frackville Little League and throughout his business career was involved with many busi-ness and civic organizations in the community. Zaylskus operated J.Z. Appliances for more than 30 years before retiring in 1975. He was the last member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his' wife, the former Ruth J.

Peck, R.N., on Feb. 20, 1994. Surviving are Frank T. Zayle, Denver, and Jack owner of J.Z. Appliances, Frackville; a daughter, Judy, Bower, Florida; six grandchil-: dren; six great-granchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Thomas M. Sullivan Funeral i Home, Frackville, followed a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Frackville, by the Rev.

Albert J. Byrne, pastor. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shenandoah. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the memorial fund of St.

Joseph's Catholic Church, Frackville. James A. Rubright James A. Rubright, 79, former Frackville resident, of 318 19th Ship Bottom, Long Beach' Island, N.J., died Tuesday, afternoon at Martin Memorial Hospital, Stuart, where he was a patient for the past two weeks. Born and raised in Frackville, he was the son of the late Harry' and Eva (White) Rubright, and had lived at Ship Bottom for the past 40 years.

A graduate of Frackville High School Class of 1934, he owned, and operated the Atlantic Equipment Construction Ship Bottom, for 38 years until his retirement in 1994. He was of the Methodist faith. A former councilman at Ship Bottom, he was a member of Henry Haines Masonic Camden, N.J. He was a member of Crescent Temple Shrine, Trenton, N.J., and the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club, Beach Haven, N.J. He was a founding member and past president of the Erltori Volunteer Fire Cherry Hill, N.J.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Helen Evans; children, Phoebe Folta, Elver-son, Janet Bennett, North Miami Beach, and James, Mountain Brook, sister, Melva Stoner, Hummelstown; brothers, Wilbur, former Schuylkill judge, Frackville; and Dr. Herbert, Citrus Springs, and Schuylkill Haven; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; nieces and nephews. Private funeral services will be held from the Nice Funeral Home, Frackville, with the Rev. John Keretzman, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Christ Church Cemetery, Fountain Springs.

MaryR.Eagler Mary R. Eagler of 924 N. Vine Hazleton, died Thursday evening at Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center. Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Kontura) Eagler and lived in this area her entire life.

Before her retirement she was employed by Hazle Garment Hazleton. She was a member of Holy Trinity R.C. Slovak Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Joseph on April 10, John Anna Rubino, and Veronica Eagler. Surviving are brothers and sisters, George, Hazleton; Albert, Naples, Stephen, Central Islip, Long Island, N.Y.; Elizabeth Sterback, California, Helen Lesko, Hazleton; and Margaret Dowd, Central Islip, Long Island, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from the John J. Pusti Funeral Home, 480 W. Broad Hazleton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m.

in Holy Trinity Slovak Church. Interment will be in Calvary R.C. Cemetery, Drums. Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. A prayer service will be conducted Sunday evening.

Catharine S. McGowan Catharine S. McGowan, 81, of West Park, died Thursday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Anne E. Gallagher, Hazleton. Born Dec.

28, 1914, in York, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Anna Mae (Reineburg) Steckler. She was formerly a dental hygienist for the late Dr. J.E. McGinty, York.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, York, the Altar Rosary Society of the church, the Rose Sunshine Club, Misericordia Convalescent Home Auxiliary, York, and the West York AARP, Chapter 1528. Preceding her in death was her husband, Raymond J. Surviving are daughters, Anne E. Gallagher, Hazleton; and Anita C.

McGowan, Bloomsburg; sons, James Dowingtown; and Thomas Mechanicsburg; and six grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church, 950 W. Market York.

The Rev. John Freeman, a family friend, will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Savior Cemetery, York. Arrangements are under the direction of the John W. Keffer Funeral Home 2114 W.

Market York. Mary Glevenyak Mary Glevenyak of 108 W. Blaine McAdoo, died Friday at Hazleton General Hospital. Born in Edwardsville, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Mary (Breciak) Glevenyak. She was a member of St.

Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, McAdoo. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were brothers, John and Andrew, and sisters, Ann and Edwina. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Stanley (Catherine) Walewski, with whom she lived in McAdoo; a brother, Joseph, Miami, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m.

from the Damiano Funeral Home, Blaine and Cleveland streets, McAdoo, followed by a Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. The Rev. Leonard Hollick will be the celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. No viewing is scheduled.

1941, while employed at Bethlehem Steel, he signed with the Allentown Cardinals, finishing the season as the regular catcher for this pennant-winning team. In 1943 and 1944, he played with in the East Penn League for Lansdale, which won penants both years. In 1945, Holden was signed by the Chicago White Sox as a scout and a minor league manager of Fall River, Mass. He also managed other teams in the organization during his 12-year tenure with the White Sox. As a result of his dedication to the White Sox organization, he was called upon to be an honorary pallbearer for Connie Mack.

When his father died, Holden resigned from baseball for a few years to run the family insurance agency. After a four-year absence from the game he loved, he re-signed with the Detroit Tigers under Edward Katalinas as a scout for eastern Pennsylvania and New York, a position he held for 14 years. He rounded off his baseball career with an appointment to the Philadelphia Phillies under Elmer Valo, serving as a special assignment scout from 1975-79. During his lifetime, Holden was the recipient of numerous awards acknowledging his contributions to baseball. He was awarded the World Series ring with the 1968 champion Detroit Tigers and the Gold Pass for years of service to baseball.

He also was chosen as the All-Star catcher on the South Anthracite Team, and was selected for membership into the Pennsylvania Legion Hall of Fame (Pennsylvania Chapter, Shenandoah), the Major League Scouts Hall of Fame, and the Pennsylvania Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also the 1986 recipient of the "Irishman of the Year" award, which is given by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, John F. Kennedy Division No. 2, Pottsville. In November 1994, Holden was elected to the Mid-Atlantic Baseball Scouts Association, Silver Spring, Md.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were a brother, John, and a sister, Helen Martin. Surviving are his wife, the former Catherine Siney; children, Kathleen Holden Kanish, St. Clair; Joseph a teacher at Burlington Township High School in New Jersey, Chur-chville, John, a teacher at Pottsville High School, Pottsville; and Tim, who is serving his second term as congressman for the Sixth District of Pennsylvania, St. Clair; a brother, Thomas, St. Clair; and six grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, St. Clair. Interment will be in Queen of the Universe Cemetery, Pottsville.

Friends may call Monday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the church. The James H. Evans and Bruce T. Hart funeral homes are in charge of the arrangements.

MaryF. Budro Mary F. Budro, 96, of R.R. 2, Grier City, Barnesville, died Wednesday evening at the home of her son, Joseph, in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. Born August 23, 1899, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Narkevicz.

A resident of Grier City for the past 20 years, she spent most of her life in Mahanoy City. She was a member of St. Richard's R.C. Church, Barnesville. Before retiring she worked in the local garment industry.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Joseph; a son, John, in 1992; and a daughter, Mary, in 1994. ridge Lansford, a former teacher and school board president in the Panther Valley School District, died Thursday in Levittown. Born in Lansford, she was the daughter of the late David John and Eliza (Roberts) Stevens. She earned her teaching degree at East Stroudsburg University. She was a member of Lansford Methodist Church, the Bicentenial Chorus and the Panther Valley Women's Club. Mrs.

Second St. Clair, a prominent Schuylkill County figure who was respected for his contributions to politics, business, sports and civic organizations, died Friday at his home. He was the son of the late John and Ellen (Leary) Holden. Holden attended St.

Mary's School and graduated from Pot-tsville Catholic High School in 1932, having played amateur baseballl with the St. Clair Tigers throughout high school. In 1934, after being awarded an athletic scholarship to Duke University from coach Jack Coombs and Connie Mack, manager of the Philadelpha Athletics, he signed on professionally with the Philadelphia Phillies. The hallmark of Holden's political career was his 16 years of service as Schuylkill County Commissioner. Serving four consecutive terms from 1959 to 1975, he played a major role in implementing initiatives to improve the quality of life for area residents.

Among the most significant of these accomplishments were the deeding of county land to Penn State for the building of the university's Schuylkill Campus, and the deeding of land to establish Locust Lake and Tuscarora state parks. During his tenure as county commissioner, he also was instrumental in establishing Rest Haven. Holden served on St. Clair Borough Council for four years and was active in many other civic organizations. He was instrumental in establishmenting the St.

Clair Swimming Pool and was one of the founders of the St. Clair Little League. He also was an active member of the St. Clair Old Timers Baseball Club, Alert Fire Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and Black Diamond Fraternal Order of Police. Also a respected leader in the business community, Holden assumed the responsibility of managing the family insurance agency The John J.

Holden Insurance Agency following his father's death. In 1934, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies to begin his three-year career in the Major Leagues. From 1935 to 1944, he played in the Phillies and A's farm clubs as a catcher, including a stint as player-Ida Flaim Ida Flaim, 95, of 204 Allen West Hazleton, died early Friday morning at Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Derringer, March 12, 1901, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Theresa (Magagna) Flaim, and spent her entire life in the Hazleton area.

For many years she had been employed at the Duplan Silk Mill, Hazleton, where she was a floor lady and taught the weaving trade. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church, Hazleton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lester, and a sister, Alma. Surviving are a sister, Olive Flaim, with whom she lived; brother, Nicholas, West Hazleton; one niece and one nephew.

The funeral will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Krapf and Hughes Funeral Home 426 W. Broad Hazleton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Interment will be in St.

Gabriel's Cemetery. The Rev. Leonard Butcavage gave the blessing at the funeral home, was the celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Trinity Slovak R.C. Church, and was assisted by Rev. Mr. Louis Smolinsky.
