Monday August 2 1982 Kingsport Times-News 3B Mets sweep Cardinals run win streak to fwel Bristol Tigers swept two from ter Moody struck out Tom solo homer in the sixth and Gooden's teammates were like three professional baseball By KEN DATZMAN the Elizabethton Twins winning both games by 4-1 Richard Monteleone (2-3) pitched a one-hitter in the second game for the Tigers At Bluefield 2500 fans came out to watch the Orioles finish their three-game series with a 3-1 2 win over the Pikeville Brewers Manuel Miranda scored the Orioles' winning run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Char- lie Burtucio The Pulaski Braves and the Paintsville Yankees split a double-header The Braves won the first game 4-0 The Yankees came from behind to win the second game 54 i pitchers last night at Cardinal Park The real thing "Gooden was magnificent" said Ed Olsen the Mets' manager "But Fitts and Moody also did a heck of job" With each outing Gooden's control improves "The main thing I want to work on is my control" said Gooden who walked two batters "I also want to develop a change-up" Carl Hollis the small player with a big punch and Greg Ge-ren backed Gooden at the plate Geren had an RBI single in the first inning when the' Mets scored twice and Hollis hit a went 2-for-2 Geren went 3-for-3 Hollis and Geren played big roles in the Mets' lOth-inning win It was the Mets' fifth straight victory and second straight double-header sweep Hollis hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning giving the Mets a 3-2 lead Geren's sacrifice fly in the 10th drove home Andy Lawrence with the winning run Moody relieved Fitts the starter in the seventh inning With two men on base Moody struck out Stan Javier who tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI single in the fifth inning to end the inning Moody pitched out of a jam in the eighth The Cards left the winning run on third af Detmer "That was one heck of a relief job" said Olsen "I told him 60 pitches that's it If he was going to win the game he had to do it within 60 pitches" Moody threw 49 pitches In the 10th Javier doubled to start the inning but Moody got the side out and won first game Lawrence had three hits to lead the Mets Javier and Terry Pendleton each had two hits for the Cards Kingsport will host Bristol at 7'clock tonight Randy Myers will pitch for the Mets who will put on a clinic for youngsters at 6 pm In other games last night the still out on the field In comes Vince Coleman the Cardinals' center fielder "Are you from Tampa?" after pitching a five-hitter against the Johnson City Cardinals A feeling of satisfaction was spread across the concrete room All five hits were singles Gooden the New York Mets' No 1 draft pick was on target He had just shut out the Cardinals 3-0 in the first game of a double-header The Mets also won the second game 4-3 in 10 innings Four C9s starts fast in one-pitch tourney i) Four C's Jewelers picked up where they left off last year in the Fun Fest One-Pitch Softball Tournament The defending champions got a game-winning hit from Jeff Coates in the bottom of the eighth inning1 at Cloud Park last night to edge stubborn First Baptist 6-5 on the opening day of this year's Fun Fest One-Pitch tournament Roger McGrady led Four C's with two hits In other first-round games Art's Seafood which is expected to give Four C's a run for the title opened with an 8-1 victory over People's Choice Brian's Bombers bombed the Holston Valley A's 18-2 Nick's Western Shop stopped the Holston Valley Rebels 7-3 Westside Beverage outhit Kingsport One-Hit 11-7 Borden Park doubled the county on Big Orange 12-6 Lynn Garden 66 pounded AFG 15-6 and the Moose beat Kingsport Health Spa The tournament continues today with winners' bracket games set for Cloud Park Randy Holland's team meets West- side Beverage in the first game at 6:30 Art's Seafood takes On Borden Park at 7:15 Four C's play the Moose at 8 o'clock and Nick's takes on Lynn Garden at 8:45 In losers' bracket games at Sevier Middle School the Holston Valley A's play Kings-port One-Hit at 6:30 People's Choice meets Big Orange at 7:15 First Baptist plays the Kingsport Health Spa at 8:00 class Barton stayed on top for the championship downing Decker 21-4 and 21-19 In women's action Karen Russell downed Kathy Zainey 21-19 and 21-12 for the class championship while Martha Lawson downed Anne Goldman 21-15 18-21 and 11-9 Tennis Clear skies finally prevailed for the tennis buffs as the Kingsport Press Fun Fest Tennis Classic finally got underway Even with the good weather their seemed to be a problem getting the -players on the courts The schedule carried over from Saturday was rankled with 18 defaulted matches Leading off what matches played was Marty Tinglehoff whojot a win inthe Men's Singles with a 6-1 6-0 win over George Smith In other Men's action JR Bowery downed Tony Rudder 6-3 4-6 7-5 and Roy Fame dropped John Bellamy 6-1 5-7 6-0 John McKenzie dropped Phil Luster 64 6-0 Gary Luttrell battled back from a first set loss to down Scott Gray 4-6 6-2 6-1 rounding out the Men's Sin-' a gles action Leading off action scheduled for today is first round action in the Men's A Singles Highlighting that action is a match scheduled for 4 pm between Jeff Garwood and Jan Holaday Ho-laday finished second in the Match Point Open and the Holston Valley Rebels meet AFG at 8:45 Racquetball Steve Miller took first place honors yesterday in the Men's A singles of the Fun Fest Racquetball tournament by downing Joan Walters 214 and 21-10 Bill Falconer took second place in the Men's A downing Mark Dolfi 21-4 and 21-18 In the finals of the Men's classConradAuel downed Buddy Bellamy after winning a tiebreaker 11-2 Auel and Bellamy split games with Bellamy grabbing the first game 21-19 Auel took the second contest 21-14 before winning the tie-breaker Leonard Ball took top honors in the Men's class by dropping Ray Lawson 21-18 and 21-16 Ball reached the finals by downing John Bell 19-21 21-10 and 11-5 while Lawson dropped Ken McGee 21-9 and 21-11 in his semi-final berth Butch Decker and Barton were the tops victory over Atlanta and a four-game series sweep of the Braves The decision moved the champion Dodgers who entered the series 10 games out of the lead within 6 games of the first-place Braves The Braves entered the series with a nine-game lead over San Diego in the NL West and looked ready to make the race a runaway With the game tied 44 in the seventh inning yesterday Los Angeles received back-to-back homers from Baker and Pedro Guerrero his 20th homer of the season off loser Carlos Diaz Los Angeles went on top 94 in the eighth on an RBI single by Ken Landreaux and a two-run homer by
