The man was critically wounded 10 months ago in a similar attack at a bowling alley, officers added. Authorities could give no motive for the slaying of the man, identified as Thcerasak Pinpa- tamarekha, who lived in suburban Compton. Officers said they didn't know how long he had lived in the United Stales, or from what part of Thailand he came.

There were no other casualties reported in the shooting, which occurred shortly before 2 a.m. About 45 persons were in the cafe, listening to a rock- music group, police said. The two gunmen, who police said also are believed to be of Thai extraction, entered the cafe and approached the booth in which Pinpatamarekha and four male companions u-ere-sit- ting. They pulled out a automatic and a Smm German Lugcr pistol and fired about 10 shots at point-blank range at Pinpatamarekha, nearly all of which hit him, police said. The gunmen fled amid the screams of onlookers, followed minutes later by virtually everyone in the cafe, including the dead man's unidentified companions, police said.

Only the two co-owners of the cafe and a drummer in the band remained behind to describe the gunmen when police arrived, authorities said. In the early morning shooting last April 0, police said, three men, all dressed in black, entered the bowling alley where Pinpatamarekha and several others were bowling, walked up to him and opened fire without warning. He was hit in the back by two slugs, hut recovered, as did another in his party, Prasong Sob- hawongse, 30, also wounded in the back.
