June20tti. Inside Sunday Daily Listings 5C Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday ....................170,180,190 CBS brings powerful "Liar, Liar" to U.S. viewers BY STEVEN A. MCGAW Last year, one of the best made-for-television movies aired was a Canadian import titled "Journey Into Darkness: The Bruce Curtis Story," a smart, well-acted dramatization of a true tale of murder and duplicity. Unfortunately, it was also one of the year's least-publicized telefilms, all but swept under NBC's rug (after a couple of airdatc changes) in favor of more high-profile, casy-to-sell works starring American performers.

Here's hoping CBS realizes what a gem it has in "Liar, Liar," and promotes it accordingly. Scheduled to air Tuesday, June 22, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. production offers topicality, fine acting and a carefully crafted script that avoids the predictability and stultifying sameness that mark most made- for-TV movie fare. The film's earliest glimpse of Rosemary Dunsmore and Art Hindle the Farrow family tells us we're on the right track. Far from the happy ciphers of TV-land, the Farrows are real people with real problems.

Gil (An Hindle) is an out-of-work Vancouver shipbuilder and recovering alcoholic. His wife, Mary (Rosemary Dunsmore), is a postal worker almost stretched to the breaking point by the responsibilities of making a living and running a household. In 22 years of marriage, Gil and Mary have produced four children, three of whom still live at home; the eldest daughter, played by Janne Mortil, has her own child and husband. slept her way into a marriage," her father says ruefully.) The oldest at home is Il-yea'r-old Kelley (Vanessa King), a fiery- tempered, often disagreeable child known for fibbing and who seems to delight in taunting her goody-goody little sister (Ashley Rogers) and a little brother (Joel Palmer) who almost never speaks. One night, Kelley is caught playing a familiar trick: locking her brother in the upstairs bathroom.

Gil declares he's "had enough" of her bad behavior.and banishes the rest of the family downstairs, taking Kelley in the bathroom to punish her. Long after the family has gone to bed, a tearful, shaken girl crawls into bed, saying simply to her younger sister, "I hate him." A few days later, Kelley shocks her School counselor with a calmly stated revelation: that night in the bathroom, her father molested her, as he had many times before. The school official moves quickly, and by nightfall Gil is arrested and formally charged. Kelley is examined by medical authorities and, though the results are indeterminate, the legal machinery moves forward to bring the case to trial. Kate Nelligan plays the prosecutor whose concern for Kelley is mingled with a desire to further her own career.

Gil's defense attorney (Susan Hogan) is equally determined and equally ambitious. Asked by Gil if she believes in his innocence, she curtly replies, "That's not relevant to my case." The real triumph of "Liar, Liar" is that its central issue is as simple as its title; whom to believe? Either Kelley or Gi! is lying, that much is certain, but the film provides viewers with a rare journey through types, hearsay and their own prejudices. It is a surprising film not to be missed. Tuesday on CBS, Vanessa King plays a child who accuses her father (Art Hindle) of sexual abuse in "Liar, Liar." The acclaimed Canadian film also stars Kate Nelligan. BALDING? FALLING? FLAT?
