their maximum There Is a direct correlation between the length and quality of education and income" During a brief press conference after his speech Sasser said he probably won't begin his re-election campaign in earnest until next spring or summer He plans to continue devoting his time to looking out for the interests of Tennesseans Commenting on the recent controversy raging over remarks made by federal budget director David Stockman in an article published in The Atlantic Monthly Sasser said "He has served the president very Director David Stockman's comments about the president's economic program were "only a ripple in the pond that won't last very long" He said Stockman should keep his job because "he is more responsible for the success of the president's programs to date than anyone else in the country other than the president himself" He added "We're too quick in this country to jump on a wounded man" Brock said the current squeeze on agricultural prices on the world market is because there are bumper crops everywhere in the world "Except in the Soviet Union where they have a perpetual weather problem" he added with a sarcastic grimace Brock also reaffirmed his faith in the eventual success of Reaganomics pointing out that interest rates and inflation have fallen considerably from their Carter-administration levels' "We should see further lowering of interest rates in 1982 as well as real improvement in economic growth" he said president's basic program in trying to reduce the budget "but I disagreed with his administration as to where some of the cuts should come I opposed many of the deep cuts in educational programs" Tuition tax credits granting income tax deductions to parents who send children to private elementary and secondary schools are the focus of another controversy Nine bills on the topic are pending in the Senate If $500 tax credit were approved he said it would cost the US Treasury about $5 billion in one year "This corriPs at a time when we're asked for a $15 billion reduction in federal support for public schools Such a tax credit would not be fiscally responsible and would have a devastating impact on public education" Chattanooga
