8A Kings port Times-News Tuesday January 6 1981 Maness leaving WKIN for Chattanooga position WKPT in 1967 while attending ETSU working as a weekend disc jockey Later he became a morning personality then program director before entering the Air Force Returning from the service in 1971 Maness rejoined WKIN as a salesperson then became sales manager He was named general manager in February 1973 Maness and his wife Judy are the parents of one daughter Brittany His parents Mr and Mrs Jim Maness live in Church Hill If you're a country station you're limited to playing country music If you're a 'beautiful music' station you've got to play beautiful music If you're an album rock station you play only album rock But if you're a popular-music station you play the popular music of the day whatever it is" A native of Church Hill Maness attended Church Hill High School and East Tennessee State University where he majored in speech and drama He began his affiliation with tion now underway as Billboard and Cashbox are nationwide in scope and do not reflect what is popular in a given area such as the Tri-Cities Because of this scientific localized approach "WKIN has been the dominant Kingsport station and usually in the top positions in the area in its target demographics" in most Ar-bitron surveys taken since 1976 Other initiatives taken by Maness include affilitation with the RKO Radio Network offering music specials news and features adding a local-news department gaining approval for 24-hour service with construc By JOHN OMYVAKE Entertainment Editor Ken Maness general manager of WKIN-AM since 1973 has been named general manager of WDOD-AM FM in Chattanooga effective today Both stations are owned by Eahakel Broadcasting Corp a Charlotte NC-based company operating six radio facilities and six television stations The Chattanooga station is one of the oldest radio stations in Tennessee having gone on the air April 13 1925 The AM station is a country-oriented station while the FM station plays adult contemporary music and is one of the largest stations between Knoxville and Atlanta broadcasting at 100000 watts WKIN by comparison is a 5000-watt station Maness 32 has seen the Tri-Cities radio market change considerably in the nearly eight years he has been helming WKIN "It's become much more professional" he said "Today the Leaflet lists recycling company was debarred from federally funded work Tennessee work for involvement in the recent bid-rigging scandals Similarly RL Vaughn Inc low bidder on the Lauderdale Co job was found to be a subsidiary of McDowell Enterpises Inc another company involved in bid-rigging Ashland-Warren and McDowell Enterprises are in the last days of an initial 30-day debar-rment A DOT spokeswoman said
