1 JOURNAL, Lubbock, December 5, I983 Potpourri Shuttle delays Christmas planning MADISON, Wis. (AP) It won't be truly the Christmas season for the family of Columbia space shuttle pilot Brewster H. Shaw Jr. until he's home and able to enjoy the holiday, too, says his 8-year-old daughter Jessica. The family won't even be buying a Christmas tree "til Dad gets back." she said in a telephone conversation from Madison, where her grandparents live.

"I saw him on TV last night," said Brewster Shaw III, 13. elder son of the shuttle pilot. "1 think that he must behaving a pood time up there." Brandon Shaw, 7, agreed that his father seems to be having a good time in orbit, but he said as for himself, he's has had enough of the attention the family has been getting. "I'm gettin' a little tired of it," said Brandon. "Would you like to speak to my mom?" The Shaws spend much time listening to a scanner that picks up communications between Colum- and mission control in Houston.

"I can hear in his voice how happy he is," said the wife, Kathy. Baker trying to clear his name DALLAS (AP) Recently released from prison, 'Bobby Baker, the once powerful Senate aide scribed by Lyndon Johnson as "my strong right arm," is out to clear his name. In October, a federal appeals court ordered a federal judge to consider new evidence unearthed from cartons of old documents at the U.S. Justice Department, and Baker, now 55, insists the evidence will prove he should not have been found guilty. "It's really getting exciting now," Baker told the Dallas Times Herald in an interview published Sunday.

The excitement, he said, concerns his attempt to clear his name 20 years after reports came out of a suspicious portfolio of business deals and nearly 13 years after he went to prison for theft and tax Miss World back on stage LONDON (AP) Miss World, Britain's Hutt, is back on stage the first stage of her prize-winning world tour. The first stop: El Salvador. The 19-year-old Miss Hutt set out Sunday on a trip to raise money for children in a military hospital. At Heathrow Airport reporters asked her if there is a man in her life. "No special man," she replied.

She also said as far as deciding what the future hold. "I am just going to concentrate on my year Miss World amd then decide on a career." SHAW Governor's daughter meets press LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Born just Tuesday, the governor's daughter, Pamela Ashley Brown, has already met the press. Gov. John Y.

Brown Jr. and his wife, Phyllis George Brown, paraded past about 20 photographers and reporters and 50 startled onlookers in the lobby of the University of Kentucky Medical Center as they checked out Sunday. The governor and Mrs. Brown, a former Miss America and television personality, were all smiles but the newborn, clad in pink and white, kept her eyes squeezed shut in the glare of camera lights. The Browns plan to spend at least one night at the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort before the governor leaves office Dec.

12. "I think we're going over Thursday," said Mrs. Brown. "I've got a little crib for her over there." Pamela left the hospital weighing about the same as she did at birth 7-pounds, lOVi ounces and is 19 inches long, her mother said. "She's really been a She hasn't cried much at ail," she added.

dry returning to brick streets WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) Nostalgia may be fine for some, and they may support a plan to strip away the asphalt from streets in this Orlando suburb, revealing quaint bricks. But, as for George Had- Lighter side of the news dad, "It will be bumpy." He wondered, "W'hy are they going back to the primitive way?" Realists and automobile shock absorbers may not like brick streets, but many people love them, says Commissioner David Currie, as the commissioners scheduled a public hearing for Dec. 13. Winter Park has many brick streets in its older neighborhoods, but at least 10 streets were paved before an outcry ended the practice years ago.

Much of the work will have to be done by hand because machines can chop up the uneven layer of brick beneath the asphalt, says public works director Joe Compton. And although three city employees know how to lay brick, finding more workers for big bricklaying jobs would be difficult, said City Manager David Harden, calling it "a lost art." To further complicate things, the 3-inch paving bricks are no longer said. City officials concede that the brick streets' washboard surfaces slow traffic as if they were little speed bumps. They will also let water drain into the soil instead of storm sewers.
