SHEIL FUNERAL HOME CH 1-6665 By Arthur Daley 1965, New York Times News Service) NEW YORK Daylight exposes the natural tawdriness of Las Vegas and heightens the boredom that the excitement-seeking night people contrive to escape.

For a couple of hours last Sunday morning, however, ennui was dispersed. The Chicago Bears came stampeding across the television screen from a different time zone and gave an eye-opening demonstration of their newly regained ferocity by beating the Detroit Lions, 17-10, in a rowdy, roughneck display of high-voltage content. Two years ago the Monsters of the Midway met the New York Giants in the championship play-off and both went into a tailspin the following season. The Giants plummeted to last place in their division and the Bears to next-to-last. Both have begun the long, uphill climb back but the Chicagoans are moving faster, more sure-footedly.

George Halas, the Papa Bear, has been coaching the monsters since 1919 and he rarely has come up with a rookie windfall that can match the Wunderkind hes bobbed up with this season. The kids have set the usually conservative old man babbling unrestrainedly and rightly so. sk NEBRASKAHARRY WILSON (31) RACES toward touchdown run in the third period against Oklahoma. halfback, is No. 20.

m. Friday, Carson chapel; interment Mound Grove cemetery. GEO. C. CARSON SONS WINNER A FULLER CL 2-7900 THE PAPA BEAR WILL BRING HIS OVER-SIZED cubs into Yankee stadium Sunday against the Giants in a renewal of the first and greatest intersectiorral rivalry in pro football.

The rich romance of this series has contributed mightily to gridiron legend. Such is the appeal of this encounter that the sell-out crowd of 62,000 could easily have been doubled or tripled if there had been room to take care of the customers. The newest Bear sensation is Gale Sayers, a 108-pound 6-footer from the University of Kansas. He can and has returned kickoffs 98 yards for touchdowns. He finds holes as if he were equipped with radar, swerving at breakneck speed without any slowdowns.

He can catch passes and he can throw them left-handed. Hes got it all. Red Grange, George McAfee and Gale Sayers, sums up Halas in extravagant praise, though not necessarily in that order. But Sayers belongs with them and I cannot pay a higher compliment than that. Hes got an instinct in running that few men have.

Defenders dare not gang up on Sayers, though. The lucky Halas also came up with Andy Livingston, a 232-pound high school dropout who signed as a free agent. He isnt as nifty as Sayers but he has more raw power. When they are resting Halas tosses in Jon Arnett and Ronnie Bull to keep the pressure constant. NEBRASKA RIPS 0.

II. IN WINDUP (Continued From Page 36i chich pass at the Oklahoma 15 and went in. Wilson ripped 160 yards in 19 carries before he left the game with a leg injury with minutes left in the game. The third-ranked Huskers fin- ished 10-0 and gave Devaney his first perfect season as a college coach. Oklahoma stands 3-6.

Nebraska needed some outstanding defensive play by tackle Walt Barnes, an all-America candidate, middle guard Wayne Meylan, cornerback Bill Johnson and end Jerry Patton. Gene Cagle, sophomore quarterback, cooly directed the Sooners into the lead. Nebraska partisans in the near-capacity crowd of 52,865 gasped at the blocked punt by i Eugene Ross, Oklahoma safety. It was the first blocked punt on the Huskers all year. Nebraska halted the inspired Sooners that time when Johnson threw Cagle 1 for an 8-yard loss on fourth-and-two.

Then canie Ihe siege of fum-1 bles. Three consecutive times Nebraska lost the ball on its second play. Oklahoma took over on the 32, 39 and 28. The first time Cagles 16-yard pass to Gordon Brown set lip a 21-yard field goal by Ron Shotts. Ted Vactors interception stopped the second threat.

But Oklahoma scored the third time with Cagles 15-yard naked reverse to the 3 the big play. Larry Brown dived over the goal, and Oklahoma led, 9-0. (Continued From Page 36 homa yesterday but the coach wasnt offended. If we can win 10, Ill take a shower like that every year, said the coach with the best record in the nation. Assistant coaches and trainers got the same shower treatment as the Huskers celebrated their first perfect season in 50 years.

Barefooted and in training togs later, Devaney reflected on the season and allowed that the current team is his best in four winning seasons at Nebraska. Its the best team weve had the only one that has won 10 games, he explained. He tabbed halfback Harry (Light Horse) Wilson as the Husker standout in the Oklahoma game, a thought echoed also in the Sooner dressing room. Jones, Oklahoma coach, saw Wilsons 66-yard go-ahead touchdown early in the third quarter as the game's turning point for the big and strong Huskers. That guy is devastating, said Ben Hart, Oklahoma halfback.

We played hard and well, the best we knew how, said Jones. I dont like to use the term, but we sure gutted it out with them. Devaney attributed Nebraska fumbles in the 21-9 victory to tenseness and possibly the fart this was the first game his team had played in cold weather. We havent been a fumbling team, he said. But today we were tense, real anxious.

They RUDY BUKICH. LONG A SECOND-STRING QUARTER-back, moved into the top-banana post midway in the season last year and how is outranked as a passer only by Johnny Unitas. He has a slew of gifted receivers, including Johnny Moms and Mike Ditka. So the Bears have been coming on like Gangbusters in the second half of the season, too late to win a divisional title but sharpening their claws for the future. Just as the Papa Bear puts Sayers in the same class with Grange and McAfee, he is equally impressed hv that de-; fensive Goliath.

Dick Butkus. The owner-coach rates him Bulldog Turner, his top center over the decades. The rookie from Illinois has been a terror on defense as he polices the middle of the line with thumping vigor. He loves his job and doesnt miss the bright college years one hit. All I muss.

he said with good humored realism, are the Friday night pep rallies. Barely a handful of Giants are left from the exciting group which participated in the game marking the last appearance of the Bears in New York, the 1956 play-off that the Giants won. 47-7. Maybe we (the coaches) keyed them up too much, although we tried not to. Tension has been building up steadily as Nebraska neared the close of a perfect season, he noted, although the Kansas game less than three weeks ago was one of the best games of the year. Devaney credited Oklahoma with playing real tough defensively against us, but he said he was disappointed in the Husker offensive performance. This was the low tide in our offense this year, he said, while praising the defensive unit for a consistently good job. Over the 10-game haul, Nebraskas outstanding attribute this year has been the fact the team maintained its poise in tough situations, Devaney said.

Four times this year the team could have cracked up against Air Force, Missouri, Oklahoma State and again in this game, where they had to come from behind. But they didn't. Kentucky Reliires Charlie Bradshaw Lexington, Ky. AP) Charlie Bradshaw, Kentucky football coach, was rehired yesterday under an arrangement that will guarantee him employment security and retirement benefits. Bradshaw received his second 4-year contract as head coach.

His salary is believed to be about $20,000 a year. bility to the front line along with Bill Lasey (6-6). Talton led the nation in rebounding as a freshman at the school when it was a junior college. Other schools at a glance: EVANGEL Coach Aundrae Curtiss Crusaders are young and lack size. Paul Hollis (6-2) and Jim Husong (5-11), both seniors, should contribute stability.

Husong averaged 13 points-a-game last year. TABOR For the first time in recent years Coach Del Reimer comes up with size. Ron Regier (6-6) will be at the post and Jay Penner (6-4) is a promising rebounder. Gerry Quiring, of Hampton, looks like an up and coming scorer. ST.

MARY OF THE PLAINS Bill Hicks, 6-3 forward, leads a squad that has 12 freshmen on an 18-man squad. We could be improved, says John Schmiedeler, the new head coach. PARK COLLEGE Coach Ed Nelson's crew has size in Fred Haenisch (6-6), Bill Perry (6-5), former Ruskin eager and Dave Dorn (6-4). Lettermen guards are Will Stewart and Joel Dempsey. Phil Landry and Dave Hackathorne, both from St.

Pius should help strengthen the bench. He played more for the love of the sport than money, because he lived at the Waldorf-Astoria and drove to practice in a Cadillac convertible. His wealthy father wanted him in his huge steel plant in Birmingham, but humored the son by letting him play one year of pro ball. Young Schuler was a superb and zestful performer. He announced his retirement hut popped lip unexpectedly at training camp the next summer. I just saw the schedule, he said.

As soon as 1 saw that the Giants were going to play the Bears again. I couldnt resist. I ve got to play another year of pro ball in order to get another shot at the Bears. He got his shot and retired for keeps. Thats what the extra-special Giant-Bears series does to dedicated football players.

If the Hawks can repeat their performance in their first road game. Coach Dolor Rehms debut will be a success. Rehm, in his first season as head coach of the Hawks after three years as assistant and three years of playing for them, came out of his first encounter Tuesday night at Missouri Valley with an 81-89 triumph. For an opener ws had a pretty good game, said Rehm. We made some mistakes, hut had the ability to come back after most of them.

Rehm will go wilh the same line-up that fared Missouri Valley. A1 Payne (8-7) and Jack Gipson (6-4) will he at forwards with all-American Pat Caldwell (6-6) at center. The guards will be Dave Fitzpatrick (6-3) and John Foley (5-11. Payne started the season impressively by scoring 25 points and pulling down 12 rebounds against Missouri Valley. Caldwell.
