Marriage Licenses BROOKLYN EAGLE, TUES, MAY 31, 1949 BOOKS OF THE DAY 'No Wall So High' Deals With Other Time The 50 Company, New York. 1949. $3.50. By PROF. PHILLIP SHAW English Dept.

Brooklyn College "No Wall So High" is the story of a man and a historical period. The man is Maurice Quain, who, disillusioned by a faithless woman, attempts to live aloof from society, amassing a personal fortune by shrewd investments carried out with disdainful selfishness. This is his "wall." But Quain lives in an age that respects no bounds, economic bounds in particular: the English Elizabethan period during the 1580's. And, to be sure, Quain is extended to wall himself invulnerably against women, especially a beautiful woman, The resulting story of how a passionate age and a passionate woman drew Quain out of his impassive isolation is vigorous, swift and suspenseful. The glitter, the swashbuckling associated with the age of Bess comes alive again in the book.

From sinister court intrigues when a head falls or a fortune rises by a whispered word, to international plots with a country at stake, the narrative moves boldly, as confident as history, Many of the characters were living personages: Secretary Walsingham, Blount, Howard, Drake, Frobisher, Burleigh, Queen Elizabeth. Dear Nancy--My older brother has turned into a Dick Tracy type, and I'm the victim.

He quizzes all my dates; he keeps tabs on what time I go out, and I what time I come in; he's taken a great interest in the marks I get in school, and he even listens in on my phone conversations. He has a girl of his own, and why he should be looking after my affairs so constantly I don't know. I'd like to make him stop, but without getting into a big fight. Please tell me what to do. (A.) Don't make a mistake by forcing a Nancy Motram opposite enemy camps.

A close brother-sister relationship is one of the most wonderful things that can happen, and they're rare. In your case, you can switch his interference into help if go at it in the right way. Turn the tide and start asking him for his advice and opinions. whether it's something to do with your personal business or not. And if you don't agree, don't walk away in a huff--tell him what you think.

In that way you'll both get to understand each other, and you'll find it's much more worth while to be a team. (Q.) Dear Nancy--A friend of mine and I have been rivals over a boy we both date, but, according to the gossip lately, I've lost out. I've heard that he's made up his mind, and it isn't to be me. The very details of the life of the times--food, dress, decorating, travel, law, prison, dueling, warfare--are there in abundance. Miss Powers has obviously mastered the period.

"No Wall So High" seems a better book than "The Gallant Years." Miss Powers' previous historical novel. Yet certain limitations of this type of writing are still noticeable. Personare caught skillfully in intimate moments as "just like the rest of us humans," but they continue to converse stiffly like personages. The fictional characters, too, sometimes speak like personages and also tend to crystalize into simple, pointed caricatures rather than unfold as complicated human beings. I wish you'd give me some suggestions. (A.) Suspicions and the grapevine aren't enough, but if you find out that your fears are fact, there isn't much you can do.

If he's settled his extra time and thought on the other lass, your best bet is to take it as gracefully as you can, and, above all, don't make your disappointment public property. You won't get him back by moaning about your loss and showing the world in general that you're carrying a large torch. Stay as friendly as ever to both of them, and occupy your time with the other boys who invite you out Saturday nights. (Q.) Dear Nancy--The girl I'd like to ask for a date is one of the most popular girls in our school. Everybody likes her and all the fellows I know want to take her out.

I'm not sure whether or not I should try to date her, because, although she smiles and talks to.me around school and outside quite a bit, she's just as friendly with every one else, so I'm not sure that I stand much of a chance. What would you advise me to do? (A.) Why hang back and let every one else beat you at the game? If you don't lift a finger to see if you could count as some one extra special, you'll never know what might be missing. It's just possible that you wouldn't even give her a second look if she weren't liked by all your friends, and if you do want to see more of her you'll have to get into the race and try your luck. You may have to join but. if she's worth getting to know, you'll have to translate your wishes into action.

Nancy will answer as many questions as possible in her column. Write her in care of the Brooklyn Eagle. (Rothenberg-Englander Marriage Announced The marriage of Miss Carol June Englander, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L.
