Prairie avenue shortly after night fall Sunday and had it not been for the presence of mind aud quickness of one of the maids working in the house the daring thief would have succeeded in stealing several hundred dollars worth of valuable silver At the time of the robbery Mr Simmons and his family were at dinner The maid was waiting on the table and had started to change the courses In her work she carried a silver service from the table and placed it on a tray in the pantry near one of the windows facing on Congress streets She returned to the dining room to continue serving the meal In a short ime she heard a noise in the pantry and supposing that it was a rat she ran into the room As she entered the room she saw the hand of the robber frasp the tray containing the silver service in his effort to draw it through the window which had been pushed up With a shout for help the maid made rush for the tray and managed: secure it before the clever thief could pull it out of the window The hdwever did not go away empty landed for in the struggle for the possession of the tray the thief managed to secure possession of a silver jitcher valued at fifty dollars As soon as possible the members of the were notified but before they could get on the track of the thief he lad run from the yard and no trace could be found of him It is thought that the thief was some Kenosha person who happened to be passing the house and seeing the maid place the silver service near the window decided that it would be an easy matter for him to secure it The young woman did not see the face of the guilty party as he was completely hidden by a portion of the blind and had only readied his hand into the window to reach the silver The case has been reported to the police and it is possible that they wilt be able to locate the daring robber office to which you have nominated Mr speech was received with great cheering and many of the delegates hastened to promise him their support for the campaign With the completion of the ticket the work of the convention was over and after the election of Harff as Chairman of the City committee and Dewey as Secretary the convention adjourned sine think that with such men leading the fight the Republicans should sweep the city at the coming election Many of these men have already started out to work for the ticket and coats are being pulled off the interests of Kenosha at heart and wil make a splendid City Treasurer Well Fitted for Assessor The republicans of the city could not have made a better choice than their nominee for Assessor Henry Jordan has resided in the city for many years and has been in the real estate and insurance business He will bring to his office a great knowledge of the value of property in Kenosha and should be better qualified than any other man in the city to make a fair assessment of property returned for taxation Mr Jordan has been a member of the County Board and in the position of Chairman showed his lawyers in the city He was educated for his profession at the State University at Madison and after graduation practiced in the office of Peter Wisher in this city For the past four years he has been in the active practice here ANOTHER SMALLPOX OASE The Evening News is in receipt of a letter from Dr Wingate Sectary of the State Board of Health in which he replies to a letter from Dr Robert Kitto of Racine recently published in thip paper In his letter Dr Wingate shows that there was absolutely no grounds for the caustic criticism of Dr Kitto of the actions of Dr Wingate The letter is as follows: Milwaukee Wis March 22 1902 To the Editor Kenosha News: Dear Owing to the prevalence of smallpox which now exists in Kenosha and the unfortunate misconception that has been created by those whose lack of knowledge con-cering proper precaution to be taken is only equalled by that of the nature of the disease in question it seems advisable to call your attention and that of the public through you to the methods used by those who are obliged in their official duties to visit cases of smallpox to prevent the spread of the disease On going to a house in which the disease exists the undersigned takes with him a satchel which contains his outfit He goes into a woodshed or a room in tjie house that is not infected and puts on a long thin rubber coat whfcch comes to his feet also a pair of thin rubber overshoes then a rubber cap with a cape which buttons in front sq as cover the head and neck complete except the eves He then visits the patiept makes his examination remaining in the room only as long as is absolutely necessary to satisfy himself as to the nature of the disease He then repairs to the room in which he dressed removes the rubber clothing and rolls it up in a towel saturated with a 40 per cent solution of formaldehyde which is now recognized as the most efficient disinfectant we have The package is then rolled in a paper which prevents the fumes of the formaldehyde from escaping The whole package is then put in the satchel and taken home After removing the rubber suit he washes his hands and face with either carbolized or bichloride of mercury soap The formaldehyde disinfects the package thoroughly but on reaching home the rubber clothing is taken out and hung out of doors for at least one night By using such means and keeping himself thoroughly vaccinated he has during the past twenty-seven years of Viis medical practice visited and seen about 3000 cases of smallpox and has never contracted the disease nor so far as he is able to learn never carried the disease to others He deems such precautions very essential and important and would urge all those whose duty it is to visit cases of smallpox to use some such precautions as have been named He has adopted this rubber suit as it is convenient and by practical experience has proved to be satisfactory and effectual aud is now being used by many other health officers throughout the country Respectfully submitted Wingate Secretary GORMAN HAS A CINOH MARRIED AT ROCKFORD Arthur Lee and Miss Mary Larsen Steal a March on Their Friends rthur Lee of Syl vania and Miss Mary Larson of composing room last Saturday the name of Joseph Rhode the candidate of( the Democratic party for alderman in 'the fourth ward was omitted from the list of nominations The mistake was in no way intentional and the Editors of the News make this further announcement of his candidacy While the committee was scouring the city for Mr Hansen the convention continued the work of making candidates It required three ballots to name the candidate for City Clerk the principal candidates being Jesse Newberry Fred Head and Allie Sharpe Newberry received a majority of the votes on the third ballot and was declared the nominee of the convention Later at the instigation of the friends of Mr Head the nomination of Mr Newberry was made unanimous Charles Frost was the unanimous choice of the convention for City Treasurer he having received every vote of the convention save his own on the first ballot Mr Frost had voted for John Yule and Mr Yule at once withdrew from the race and moved that the nomination be made unanimous Frost Pledges Loyalty Loud calls of were heard from all sides and Mr Frost responded by thanking the delegates for the honor they had conferred upon him and assuring them that he would do all in his power to secure the success of the Republican ticket at the polls Mr Frost was greeted with great enthusiasm and it was some time before the demonstration subsided sufficiently to allow the convention to proceed with its work The convention then proceeded to nominate an Assessor and on the first ballot Henry Jordan received a majority of the votes of convention and was declared the nominee Mr Jordan was in the hall but he declined to address the convention preferring to show what he could do at the polls rather than in the convention Mr Hansen Withdraws As the vote for the nomination of a Justice was being taken Mr Hansen who had been named for Mayor was brought to the hall He was received with enthusiasm and spoke a few words in declining the nomination Mr Hansen said: of the convention I was somewhat surprised when I heard that you had decided to name me for Mayor aud I am sorry that it will be necessary for me to de cline the honor Some days ago my friends asked me to accept the nomination for alderman in the First ward and after considerable hesitation I consented to make the run Having done this I cannot see my way clear to accept your higher honor and I must A motion was made to refuse the verdict of Mr Hansen but he explained that his business interests would not permit him to accept the nomination and the delegates reluctantly allowed him to withdraw The balloting for candidates continued and on the first ballot Sturgis received a majority of the votes and was declared the nominee of the convention for Justice of the Peace He was called before the convention and made a short speech thanking the convention and assuring his hearty co-operation in the work of the campaign Ringing Words At this juncture of the convention the Chairman demanded a new ballot for Mayor but Hernscheim of the third arose and moved that Chas Pfennig be declared the unanimous nominee of the convention for Mayor As the motion was put every man in the lobby responded with a resounding and there was no doubt but there was a call for Pfennig Mr Pfennig left his desk as Secretary and addressed the convention He said: thank yon gentlemen for the honor you have conferred upon me I know that the duties of the Mayor of Kenosha are arduous I have often questioned as to whether it was an honor for a man to be a member of the City Council but I will never question the honor of being named as a candidate for Mayor by a Republican convention As an American citizen I accept the honor yon have conferred upon me and as an American citizen I will do all in my power to give my best labors to the city if I am elected I deem it the duty of every true citizen to do something for the city which he calls his home and if I can in any way serve my home city I will do it gladly I pledge myself to all that is clean and honorable and consistent with my past life to seenre an election to the high For Charles Pfennig For City Jesse Newberry For City Chas Frost For Assessor Henry Jordan Foi Benjamin Sturgis Charles Pfennig will be the next mayor of the city of Kenosha This was the decision of the Republican 6ity convention held at the city hall last Saturday evening Mr Pfennig being nominated by acclamation and accept ing the nomination in a short speech In which he pledged himself to do all in his power to secure better government for Kenosha The nomination of Mr Pfennig came as a surprise to many who were not acquainted with the inside workings of the convention During the afternoon Mr Pfennig had been asked to accept the office but he had declined aud had urged the nomination of Thomas Hansen When the convention was called quite a number of the friends of Mr Pfennig remained loyal but Mr Hansen was nominated on the first ballot Later in the evening Mr Hansen appeared at the hall of the convention stated that his business interests were such that he could not accept the nomination and for this reason he asked to be allowed to decline The withdrawal of Hansen left Mr Pfennig practically pledged to accept the nomination and he yielded gracefully to the demands of the conven-tion Nominee Greeted by Cheers There was a great demonstration in honor of the nominee and it was evident from the enthusiastic greeting given him by the convention that he will be one of the most popular candidates ever nominated by the Republican party in Kenosha The city convention was the one thing of Interest on Saturday evening and the little room in the city hall was all too small to hold the enthusiastic crowd of Republicans who gathered to assist in naming the city ticket Long before the hour of the convention every available seat in the room had been filled and the delegates were forced to find seats on the railings about the Among the people in the lobby were a number of leading Democrats and it is safe to say that this is thp first time that their faces had ever beeu seen in a
