aod all VYar Centers Report Only Rumors Special to the Evening News London Feb 12 6:30 There is a marked lull in war news in London today No confirmation has been received of the reported attempts of the Japanese to land troops near Port Arthur Evidently Tokyo dispatches of yesterday referred to the first Port Arthur fight and did not refer to subsequent engagements RECORD IS A NOTABLE ONE Physician of Royalty In India Relates Many Interesting Experiences During Her Thirteen Years Life Abroad Company Has Been Engaged In Business a Little Over a Decade and the Plant Is One of the Most Stable in Kenosha HOSPITAL GETS GIFTS St Petersburg Feb 12 It is positively stated by the government officials that no telegrams have been received from Admiral Alexieff except those already given out Even the Czar is expectantly awaiting complete and direct official information The RallruHde in Wisconsin Have Been Prosperous the Past Year Prosperity has attended the railroads of the state of Wisconsin during the past year according to the reports now being received at the office of Railroad Commissioner Thomas These reports are due Feb 10 but some are usually late in being filed The large railroads that have thus far reported give figures that indicate a substantial increase in business and the small roads that have been for years struggling to pay operating expenses and interest on indebtedness report increased earnings The large and rich roads are taxed 4 per cent of their gross earnings and the poorer and smaller roads are taxed only $5 a mile when the earnings are less than $1500 The Northwestern road will pay $62875375 an increase of $3299703 The Chicago St Paul Minneapolis Omaha will pay $20980241 an increase of $14684 70 The St Paul and Wisconsin Central roads have not yet reported The Ahnapee Western will pay $38407 an increase of $21407 The reason for this large proportional increase is that the road increased its earnings so much as to change classes and its taxes are calculated on the per cent system rather than $5 a mile The Dunbar Wausaukee will pay $22404 an increase of $13655 The Hazelhurst Northwestern will pay $9930 an increase of $4434 The Chicago Harvard Lake Geneva the only interurban line in the state taxed with the railroads as common carriers pays $2759 this year paying last year $25 or $5 a mile for its five miles of system IN HONOR QF LINCOLN Sixty-five of the Italian resident of Kenosha last night signed the constitution and by laws of the of Kenosha Wisconsin The society is a new benevolent organization among Italians of the city which plans to defend the more ignorant members of the Italian colony against the incursions of the more crafty Americans Leading Italians in the city have taken part in the formation of the society and there is little doubt but that it will do much to improve the condition of the Italians in Kenosha The Society has been named the The Furniture Journal one of the leading- trade journals in the West in the issue for February pays a high compliment to the Kenosha Crib Company of this city and tells an interesting story of the development of the plant during the decade that it has been doing business in Kenosha The article is as follows: can be accomplished by two men with nothing to start with but pluck energy and perseverance has been demonstrated by the successful business built up by Messrs Fred Hannahs and Johnson A Jackson of the Kenosha Crib Co Both of these Board of Call for Gifts is Responded to By Many People The request of the Directors of the Kenosha hospital for small Stark who has been in charge of the Russian fleet at Port Arthur has been removed and has been succeeded by Admiral Skrvdrioff at THE ANNUAL RECEPTION Dub of Park Avenue Church Holds a Celebration in Honor of His Birthday Rev and Mrs Farrlli Entertain Members and Friends of the Church One of the most pleasant social events of the winter in Kenosha was the reception given at the manse of the First Congregational Church Thursday evening when Mr and Mrs Farrill entertained in honor of the members and friends of the First Congregational Church Mr and Mrs Farrill were assisted in entertaining by Dr Emily Brainard Rjder More than a hundred of the members and friends of the church were in attendance and spent the evening in a very charming manner During the early hours of the evening a musical program was rendered after which refreshments were served Those present report a very enjoyable time Dr Emily Brainard Ryder one of the most brilliant women that America has sent into India during the past twenty years was the guest of honor of the ladies of the Congregational church this afternoon and her address to the ladies on her experiences in the Orient marked the opening of the ladies parlor of the church and closed the week of celebration attending the rededication of the church Dr Ryder has probably gained more fame as a physician among the natives of India than any of the people who have gone from America to Hin-dostan For the past thirteen years she has been practicing medicine in the Indian states with the support and assistance of the English government So great has her work been that she is known as the Physician of the Royalty of half a dozen of the petty states that go to make up the domain of England in the Orient In her talk this afternoon Dr Ryder told the ladies of Kenosha many of her unique experiences and gave the ladies of the city an entirely new view of India and her people She spoke especially of the legal and medical views of an American of the much discussed child marriage in India and passing over this dark picture of Indian life she spoke of the bright side of the home life of the people of that country There is not much of a bright side to their life but Dr Ryder brought out many new points of exceeding interest She spoke in general of the prejudices which prevail in India and the hard task of the foreigner in getting the confidence of the people Of her personal experiences she told of her visit to the royal women of India and the strange customes she was forced to adopt in treating them for their ailments One of the most interesting of the Indian stories told by Dr Ryder was one of her experiences while acting as envoy of the English government One of the Rajahs of an important state had died and an effort was being made to prevent the rightful heir from assuming the throne The English government desired to get at the bottom of the trouble and as a diplomat was needed to sift the matter Dr Ryder was sent with the commission She braved the dangers of the interior and after many weeks of labor she had the satisfaction of having the usurpers to the throne over thrown and the little Rajah was restored to his rights Dr Ryder will remain in Kenosha for several days MANY SPEAKERS ARE PRESENT FRED HANNAHS A JACKSON KEN0SBA IS TO AID REVIVE ATHLETICS James Cavanagh Selected as One of the Men to Seek Legislation Independent Companies High School Boys Will Ask Board of Education to Provide a Gymnasium For Athletics NEW STATE OFFICERS ELECTED OF INTEREST TO SPORTSMEN GONE SINCE JULY in honor of the murdered King of the Italians who was very popular among the Italians in Kenosha The society will at once seek a state charter and then it will unite with the Chicago society bearing the same name and an effort will be made to spread the work of the society to other cities in Illinois and Wisconsin Charles Gil-lotte one of the founders of the society in speaking of the plans this morning stated that the society was a purely American society and not in any way connected with the various societies existing in Italy The society is laid out along the lines direct ed by benevolent societies in this country and its sole purpose is the practice of charity among the Itali ans of the city of Kenosha Every Italian in the state regardless of his condition in life is eligible to membership in the order and he will have the protection of the society so long as he lives up to its rules and regulations The first purpose of the society is to care for the sick and disablec Italians and to this end the rules of the society provide that when an Italian is taken sick he will have free care from a competent physician and added to this he will receive each week during his illness a sick benefit of five dollars Should one of the members of the society die the socie ty will attend to the funeral arrange ments and see to it that the member is decently buried But the society has even a deeper purpose than the care of the sick and disabled for ii: will make an effort to protect the Italians against the men who are now preying upon them both in Kenosha and other cities For some time the life of an Italian has been considered worthless Many of the workmen from sunny Italy who are in this country have left all their friends behind them and should they mee1 with accident or death there is no one to take up a fight to secure the damages for their families The new society will undertake this work Kenosha is one of the first cities in the country in which the society has perfected an organization and it is expected that the Kenosha chapter will be of great help to the Italians of the city The League of Park Avenue Church held a banquet and Lincoln anniversary service in the church parlors last evening The Fred Novell Post of the A had been invited to attend as guests of the League and thirty members responded Ninety men sat down to a fine dinner served by the ladies of the church After dinner and the transaction of League business President Shipplee introduced Grant as toastmaster Mr Grant said: is the month in which we celebrate the birth of two greatest patriot presidents Washington and and on behalf of the League he extended a cordial welcome to the members of the Grand Army of the Republic He then called upon Mr Shippee to speak of the of Abraham Mr Shippee gave many incidents of struggles with poverty and ignorance emphasizing especially his thirst for knowledge and the masterly way in which he rose above all discouragements to the supreme place of power in the nation and to deathless fame in the history of the world Mr Peter Fisher who was to have spoken on as a was unable to be present on account of illness and after a song by the Ariotr Quartette the pastor of the church Rev Stevens was called upon to speak of Lincoln as and but in view of the lateness of the hour and the fact that honored guests were yet to speak he deferred his address until Sunday evening and invited the members of the A Post to be present at that time Mr Lyman on behalf of the Post gracefully accepted the invitation Mr Lyman then spoke referring to the common soldiers He said that he did not enter the army until late in the struggle and that others of his comrades were much better qualified to talk of the work on the field than he He then spoke of the long and hard service of some of the comrades present Mr Lyman read extracts from the Chicago Tribune at the time of first inauguration which brought the intense feeling of those (lays before the auditors in a most forcible manner Simmons Sr was the next speaker He told of his Recollections of Mr Lincoln In closing Sheppard of Boston Mass was called upon and gave a short stirring speech Mr Sheppard is a A man and was a leading Kenosha patriot during the war gentlemen grew up together from boyhood they were schoolmates and chums and when they reached estate they worked side by side at the bench together but they were not the kind of men to be content working for some one else but belong to that class of citizens who have done so much to build up manufacturing industry in all parts of this country so in 1882 they formed a partnership and began the manufacture of cribs and cradles They being the pioneer manufacturers of this class of goods and the first builders of cribs and cradles fashioned after the old style trundle bed They never made anything of a cheap or trashy character both being thorough mechanics their goods from the first were well constructed and finished so that from the start their line of goods has always set the pace and stood high in the estimation of the trade The business was continued as a partnership for ten years or until 1892 when it was incorporated Mr Hannahs being elected president and Mr Jackson secretary and treasurer and they have held these positions from that time to the present While the company still has a large annual output of goods four or five years ago they began to manufacture a few cheap stands and parlor tables This was more or less of a side issue but the goods of this class that they turned out gave such satisfaction to the trade that the demand for them grew rapidly so their table line has been gradually extended until today they are making one of the best lines of staple goods of this kind in the country Their factory is a model one and is equipped with ma- chinery from the very best makers in the country besides a lot of special machinery that has been invented and built by Mr Hannahs who has active charge of the manufacturing end of the business and who is one of the best all-around factory men in the country The demands of their business has compelled them to increase their capacity several times and now they have a factory the entire length of which is nearly 840 feet As long as they have been employing labor they have never had a strike or any labor difficulty with their men Both Mr Hannahs and Mr Jackson are very democratic and are on familiar terms with every man or boy in their employ and if any one working for them has a grievance they always feel at perfect liberty to go to either one of them and talk it over and while the entire force is under perfect discipline any little difference or misunderstanding that comes up is quickly adjusted so that harmony prevails in all departments Both Mr Hannahs and Mr Jack-son are interested in other industries in Kenosha Mr Hannahs being president of the Windsor Spring company another one of the successful factories in the thriving Wisconsin Mrs Maggie Brannan Brings Action For Divorce From Her Husband Weary of waiting for the return of her husband who had been missing from Kenosha for more than six months Mrs Maggie Brannan through her attorney James Cava nagh filed a suit in the Circuit court this morning demanding an absolute divorce Robert Brannan the husband who is the defendant in the action disappeared from Kenosha last July and since that time no trace of him has been found Every effort has been made to locate the missing man' but since the evening he left Kenosha no word has been heard from him Mrs Brannan and her three children have remained in Kenosha awaiting the return of the husband and father She alleges the statutory complaint of Spurred on by the declaration of the Kenosha doctors that the school children are in need of jnore exercise the boys of the Kenosha High school have started out with a petition to the Board of Education asking that some immediate plan be made to secure a gymnasium for the High school The Kenosha school is the only one in this section of the state which does not send a team to the various state meets and which is not represented on the athletic fields with a foot ball and base ball team The boys declare that under the present arrangement any athletic effort would be a flat failure as there is no gymnasium in which they can train and that with the opening of the spring season th6 boys will be in no condition to contest with schools in this section The members of the Board of Education state that they would be pleased to assist the boys if it were possible but at the present time there seems to be no way to place a gymnasium in the Central building without the expenditure of a large sum of money A little more support for Athletics by the Board and among the teachers of the High school would be a decided help Kenosha boys are falling far behind theit- fellows in Southern Wisconsin in the athletic line and something should be done to stop this backward movement The game of basket ball which was to have been played last night between the teams of the Kenosha A and the Milwaukee Athletic Club was postponed until next Tuesday evening independent companies be removed from the United States Postoffices in different parts of the country The Kenosha Independent Company was admitted as a member of the association and its managers will take an important part in the management of the state organization from this time on The most interesting part of the last session of the convention was the matter of arranging for toll service to
