starting identity Obviously UT played Jerry Colquitt against Shuler to be fair with the former for his efforts in practice to develop a backup and to nudge the multi-talented North Carolina native toward maturity Is the QB dilemma over? "I said Shuler sipping a Gato-rade outside the dressing room to avoid cracking a smile When future games are on the line Shuler will be the UT pilot Colquitt the co-pilot quarterback has to be in control" he said ter with a 45-yard run off the QB draw No less than five times during the game he feinted a step back to pass then dashed ahead for gains Finally with 50 seconds to go and UT trailing 31-27 Shuler jumped in for the winning TD to climax a 66-yard drive However Georgia finished Zeier had the Bulldogs headed goal-ward when linebacker George Kidd blasted receiver Andre Hastings from behind and knocked the ball loose was about 10 yards behind said Kidd he got the ball and I somehow caught Ingram said Tennessee was hoping for a turnover fought off a block and reached around Hastings UT 34-yard line to seal the win with 14 seconds left to play From start to finish it was a thrill a minute said Ingram a big test like a final exam for Eric Zeier talented 6-2 200-pound quarterback passed for 354 yards Still he stood in the shadow of Shuler who was merely a split-duty QB when the game began Shuler had closed the third quar- and stripped the ball loose I just told myself need to get this I held tightly to it and waited for our offensive unit to come onto the UT except that it was behind only 17-13 flirted with total embarrassment in the first half Georgia had outgained the Vols 342 yards to 150-at the break But UT shut down the Bulldogs in the third quarter to regain the lead 20-17 The see-saw exchange was just warming up as it turned out Both teams seemed to have the win under wraps at various times only to see the other charge back It was inevitable in this two-week time frame when Tennessee had to 1 ATHENS Ga This particular Tennessee team has And Heath Shuler Between the hedges of Sanford Stadium Saturday the Vols shocked Georgia 34-31 in a football classic One would have to dig deep into UT archives to find on game films where a quarterback draw was used maybe as far back as the days of Jimmy Streater and Condredge Holloway to see it with any degree of consistency But the 6-3 208-pound Shuler with the gait of a thoroughbred trampled the Bulldogs by running keepers on a sunny afternoon that was fading into dusk when middle linebacker Reggie Ingram recovered a fumble on the I Please see SHULER paje 2D.
