When they finally separated all the combatants, here were the results: The Senators won the opener of a doubleheader from the Tigers, 8-3, but lost the nightcap 12-5. The other notable development of the week is a long-awaited outburst of bass activity at Crab Orchard. The bigmouth are off the beds, roaming, mean and hungry. and good catches have been reported at all hours of the day. Harry Wright of Carbondale hung into eight nice ones one morning; Al Peithmann latched onto eight during a fast furious noon hour, and another pair of veterans took limits during an afternoon and evening expedition.

Irvin Peithmann and W. E. Keepper hooked 20 Saturday evening, landing 12 of them, and then netted nine more in 45 minutes Monday evening. Haircuts to Mound City barber George Monan closed up shop and hit Horseshoe Lake for a string of 100 crappie they start hitting good, those haircuts have to all on the Bucktail. Bluegill fishing is fair to good and bass (two to three pounders) seem to be responding well for the few plug- gers abroad.

Several 80 to 100- crappie strings have come out of the lake in the past few days. Gene Littler Wins Oklahoma City Golf Open OKLAHOMA CITY IP Gene Littler. winner of the Oklahoma City Open, took off for Denver today with high hopes of winning the National Open championship that narrowly eluded him in 1954 Littler, Art Wall of Pocono Manor, and Arnold Palmer of Ligonier, finished 1-2-3 in the $30,000 Oklahoma City Open and all pose a strong threat in the U. S. Open that starts Thurs day. This was first tour nament victory since last August.

Six years ago, as a won of the pro circuit, Littler finished second by one stroke to Ed Furgol in the National Open at Springfield, N. J. The 29-year-old Singing Hills, pro, picked up a check of $4,300 here with a 72-hole score of under par. But he need ed a 15-foot putt on the 18th green to beat Wall, Wall won second money of $3,000 with a 274 total and Palmer, the defending champion, came in third and earned $2,000. Bluegill are active, hut not as much so as in the past two weeks.

Bass at Little Grassy still appear somewhat indecisive, although the fishing tempo picked up slightly around June 8. They seem to have moved hack out, and artificial worms and eels along with the Bomber were picking up a few. Ed Goetz of Belleville caught a six pounder, the week's best, on a black worm. A Granite City angler took a five pounder on a live African black worm. Bluegill ifshing remains fair to good: Bill Schoolcraft of Carbondale has caught several dozen nice ones using flyrod spinner-worm combinations and poppers at night.

An East St. fisherman snagged a three and one-quarter pound crappie and a Cape Girardeau angler hooked about 30 three- quarter to one-half pounders out by 'he dead tree near the Grassy docks, but activity has been generally sporadic. Grassy usually runs a couple of weeks behind Crab Orchard as far as water temperatures and spawning cycles are concerned, so mid-June may bring the customary run there. Lake Glendale Action Slows Lake Murphysboro fishermen are puzzling over a sharp decrease in the sizes of individual bluegill catches. While a fair number are still being caught, few of them are keepable.

Channel cat, too, are way down in size, Vernon Donley, visiting angler from San Diego, rang up the best bass parlay of the week, a five pounder and a three er on plastic worms, but Bill Fenton of Murphysboro took the top individual catch, a six and one- half pounder on a Lucky 13. J. B. Presley, Murphysboro, took two totaling five and one-half pounds on a Lazy Ike. Lake Glendale bluegill fishing has slowed somewhat and the same situation prevails at Pounds Hollow.

The creeks are coming in and bass, bluegill, striped bass and fishing on Lusk and Grand Pierre was reported quite brisk during the week. The Ohio is just getting inside the banks and is still muddy. Long Reach at Perks was hot for awhile but has slowed this week. Cache basin is still high and too clear to get on top of anything. PATRIOTS SIGN COHEN BOSTON UPI)- The Boston Fa triots of the American Football League have signed Abe Cohen, former Chattanooga star who played linebacker for the New York Giants and the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

Willie Hartack IN THE Parade By OSCAR FRALEY United Press International NEW YORK Willie Hartack was laughing out loud today. Willie won the Kentucky Derby aboard Venetian Way. Then, after the colt took a drubbing in the Preakness, he was jerked off the mount by trainer Vic Sovinski. So Willie me aboard an outsider named Celtic Ash and scored a smashing five and one-half length win over Venetian Way in the Balmont Stakes. Did Sovinski do him a favor? at snapped Willie after it was over with his usual sweet nes and light He didn't do me any favor.

I would have taken myself off that horse any- 1 But, whether you like him or not, you have to admit that the sharp-tongued little 27 vear-o'd from the Pennsylvania anthracite belt is quite a race rider He is, i some observers feel, a victim of bis own rapid success. Got By Gambling For at 17 he was an undersized high school graduate who had wanted to be a major league baseball player but, lacking the stature, seemed consigned to a job as a messenger in a Johnstown steel plant. There was a period where, a rural dead end kid, he got by as we 1 as he could by gambling and shooting craps. Then a family friend suggested that he look for work at the race I track. Certainly he was little enough, this handsome haired youngster who never backed up from anybody despite his lack of stature.

When that little, particularly in an area where the kids usually come big and tough, you learn to scrap at an early age. Willie went to Charleston. W. Va and picked up a job cleaning stalls. It was a long way in distance from the circle at the Kentucky Derby, but not in a matter of time.

Hartack before long was work: ing as an exercise boy and then, in 1952, he was given his first mount. The third time out, Willie slashed his way to victory and almost overnight became one of the hottest riders on the half mile around West Virginia and Mary and. Rode His Own Way There, he swiftly discovered, are a lot of tired old horses, the stewards too strict and you can pretty much ride the way you want Riding much the he wanted to, Willie was ready for the big time at the end of his first year. He had learned well about how to drive through a needle-eve opening along the rail and the five-foot, four-inch mite made up in daring what he lacked in polish. But that came, quickly, too, for he is a bright young man despite his crusty, go- to-you-know manner They say in the tack room that ho is an rider but you can's fault his impressive record nor take away his two Kentucky Derby triumphs.

Even though Sovinski took him off Venetian Way. The trainer contended that Hartack gave the colt a bad ride in the Preaknes, lettsng Venetian head loose against instruc tions and pulling him up quickly at the risk of injury to the coll when it was over It was Willie riding pretty much the he wanted to ride. Like Saturday When he threw the dirt in Venetian muzzle quite a bit in face, too. the Yankees was postponed bei cause of rain. Pirates Split Twin Bill In the National League, the Pirates crushed the Cardinals, 15-3, in the first of two games but dropped the nightcap, 5-2.
