Sullivan South and Sullivan Central The teams have been divided into 13 pools 11 pools with four teams and two pools with three teams each The teams in each pool will play each other once with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the championship bracket The names mean much to you now They are just ninth 10th and some rising 11th graders who had time to make a name for themselves But the players who gather here next week for the AAU National Basketball Championship 15-and-under division will be the college perhaps NBA stars of the future When Kingsport Mets pitcher Jim Scheffler was drafted by the New York Mets he was hoping to get the chance to play shortstop as well as pitch just as he had done while playing at Joliet (111) Junior College This was not to be the case for the young hurler however as the Mets drafted him in 41st round solely as a pitcher I wanted to play every day but the decision was made for said Scheffler LEMOND LEADS TOUR DE FRANCE FUTUROSCOPE France Greg LeMond retained the lead in the Tour de France Friday after an easy ride in which the most of the pack rode together on the longest stage Frenchman Joel Pelier took the sixth stage in 6 hours 57 minutes 45 seconds winning by 1:34 But the rest of the pack finished close enough for the overall standings to remain virtually unchanged not complaining about the stage Pelier is more than nine minutes behind LeMond said LeMond has a five-second margin over two-time winner Laurent Fignon of France after stage of the 23-day 2020-mile event who throws a fastball more than 80 mph a curveball a slider and a changeup just think about it I thought I could play infield but they thought pitching was my best shot I guess it matter as long as I get a chance to There will be a consolation bracket moving to Jonesborough are gone this weekend but both are in reserve and could give the team a push on the final weekend Meadowview (7-2) Consistent play and home-course advantage on the final day makes the Meadowview boys the favorite if Davis and Poe come to rescue Lonesome Pine (9-2) Like Meadowview Lonesome Pine always challenges Tri-Cities (9-2) Unfamiliarity with the courses being played will hurt the Blountville crew Elizabethton (5-1) Elizabethton should take a first-round lead but but also will be playing all four rounds away and Silver Lake a first-division finisher last year lost GKGA points leader and five-time champion Mike Poe and former champion Jimmy Cooper from its membership That leaves Meadowview one of the most consistent teams in the tournament But even a negative against Meadowview For possibly the first time in the history of the tournament Lindsay Harp will not be playing Favorite favorite got the favorite? tempted to say but that would be a cop-out So for the sake of posterity here are the odds on the team competition and why: Buffalo Valley (7-2) Davis and Poe Favorite favorite got the favorite? there is a team favorite in the 16th Annual Greater Kingsport Amateur no one is claiming it as play begins in the 72-hole team tournament today at Eliza-bethton Golf Club Subsequent rounds will be played Sunday at Warriors Path in Kingsport July 23 at Cedar Hill Country Club in Jonesville and July 24 at Meadowview Golf Club in Kingsport Buffalo Valley won last title by a single stroke over Tri-Cities Country Club of Blountville but Buffalo Valley will be without last team leader Wendell Davis at least for this weekend and is also without a home-course advantage Buffalo Valley hosted a round of last tournament So did Tri-Cities Both will take their acts on the road for all four rounds this year And like Buffalo Valley team is somewhat depleted this year only got about half the players we had last said Tri-Cities No 1 man Mark Wingate this week Morrell is not playing this year Neither are Steve Burnette or Larry Reynolds And Glen Cowan make it in qualifying our top Lonesome Pine is perenially strong i Please see NEW page 3B.
