But more are lost by change of business than by deta and this loss might be -estimated without exaggeration at 800.

We have, then, an actual loss of 1,800 physicians annually, which must be made up. Again, the increase of population in the United States is about 700,000 i yr, which it requires an increase of 1,000 physicians to supply. There are, therefore, actually required 2,800 new physicians in the United States yearly. To meet this, we have only 1,400 graduates from the schools, and about 800 foreigners, making in all 1,700, and leaving an actual deficiency of 600 a year, to bo supplied by irregular practitioners. In a recent lecture Prof.

M. Blot stated that people who eat enough of well-cooked food, look fresher and younger than others; The effect is equally good upon the mind as body. The difference in eating will change the appearance of a family materially in a generation. Food should be prepared according to age, sex, climate and season. In spring we should eat largely of greens, as they purify the blood and drive away bile.

In summer eat a little more meat than in the spring. Boast or broiled lean meats are better. In winter eat much of fat. It is not the amount of food eaten that nourishes the body, snore than the amount of money spent makes a good dinner, but the amount digested, lie quoted from several eminent men that good things are made for man, and we should use them. Igm rthe Hi CM Bt, No. 128 Massachusetts St, Lswrence, Kas. TT7T5 HAVE IN STORK AND ABE RECKIV VV JNQ the largest and best assorted stock of goooa we nave ever opened, embracing ait grades and styles. Ws are also manufacturing the DIFR0YED SCREW BOOT AND SHOE, THE Greatest Improvement of our Time This, added to the PATENT SOLE, makes It Impossible for the boot or shoe to rip or to let in dust, and the sole remains Intact until the uppers have entirely given way. DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOT AND 8HOE SCREW.

The origin of the manufacture of boota and shoes, with screws to secure and fasten the soles to the uppers, was a French' invention, and time and the experience of some sixteen or eighteen years have proved them to be, beyond all question, the best, most durable and easy fitting and wearing boots and shoes ever introduced into the market. They hare been extensively introduced and worn in California, and command prices of $3 to $5 per case over pegged work, and superior to sewed work, as machine-sewed work, after being worn, awhile, will rip and to-day nearly 75 per cent, of all the boots and shoes manufactured in France and England are made with screws or spring nail metallic fastenings men's and boys' and ladies' and misses' work and are extensively sold and exported to the South American market and to the East and West Indies, where our American pegged work will not sell at all and.therefore, giving to France and England, in the boot and shoe trade, almost the complete monopoly of those markets. The only thing that has heretofore prevented the French screw work from being universally introduced into our American boot and shoe manufactories, is the clow, and therefore expensive, process of the French machine, in catting and inserting the screw into the soles of the shoes ana the great objection to all nails thus far introduced in the manufacture of boots and shoes, is their sure and inevitable liability to become loose and work up into the foot- Ihe great advantage and merit of this improvement over all other metallic fastenings now used in the manufacture of boots and shoes, is that the screw, when inserted into the sole and struck with a blow, screws itself in, and being driven by hand, makes more solid, better finished and more durable work than the so called wire-cable made boots and shoes. This screw, by turning and screwing itself into the leather when driven, does not break the fiber of the leather, like the flat-pointed screw when driven, and will hold with all the tenacity of a screw inserted by the French machine and is wholly immaterial, if the screw is driven to prick through the sole, whether it is made to clinch or not but in case it comes through, it will clinch or rivet itself, upon the face of the iron last, into the insole. The screws are driven by hand, with a hammer, the same as a wooden peg, one row, and it is not necessary to drive them thicker than three to 1J inches: and all the care required is to use a small awl to make the hole for the screw, and not to drive the awl deeper than through the sole and welt, leaving the screw, when driven, to make its own hole through the upper of the shoe and insole.

The Public are Invited Call and Examine. The attention of all BOOT AND SHOE MANUFACTURERS and the pnblio generally is called to this great improvement ia the manufacture of boots and shoes, with a hammer or self-driving screw. All that is wanting is a fair teat of the screw-mads work to- prove its superiority over all other make of boots and shoes ever Introduced into the American market. All orders should be addressed to Lawrence. Kas.

Ws intend to give to the manufacturing of Edcts and Shoes Closer attenttoa than heretofore, making it our sua to add to the reputation our work already baa.
