Underdog Ponies stun Texas By DENNE FREEMAN AP Sports Writer DALLAS, (AP) Underdog Southern Methodist, given heart by Oscar Roan's bizarre 14-yard touchdown fumble return, followed the fanatical defense of hose guard Louis Kelcher and tackle Steve Morton to shock SUi-ranked Texas 18-14 Saturday and drop the Aggies Into a Southwest Conference first place tie. Texas sagged to a 4-1 SWC record and was tied with the winner of the Texas-Baylor game. The Mustangs built up a 1M lead over the heavily favored Aggies who closed the margin to 16-14 with less than five minutes to play on reserve fullback SPLASH1N' muddy Dwayne football game Saturday afternoon in San McMeans (45), Howard Payne fullback, finds some running room behind clearing blocks during the HP-SWTSU Lone Star Conference Marcos. But the Bobcats won, (Bulletin Photo) Jacket comeback ft It short, 17-7 SAM MARCOS-Howard Payne University's football Yellow Jackets staged a second half rally which fell short here Saturday and Southwest Texas State Bobcats scored a hard- fought 17-7 Lone Star Conference win before 6,000 drenched homecoming fans. As much as anyone else, it was the Yellow Jackets who defeated the Yellow Jackets in the rain-soaked game.

Repeatedly throughout the misty, chilly afternoon, HPU pass receivers dropped factor which kept the Paynemen from sustaining drives and scoring points. Ths loss dropped Coach Dean Slayton's team to a 4-5 season record and a 3-4 mark in conference action. The Bobcats retained at least a tie for the league's top spot. They are now 5-2 in LSC play and 5-3 for the year. The Bobcats looked tough at times in the first half, and.

appeared they might blow the smaller Jackets back to Brownwood when they Jumped to a two-touchdown and field goal lead, 17-0. But the Baptists came back rough in the second to limit the SWT squad to fewer yards than in the first half, and no points, Meanwhile the Jackets put one TD on the board. HOWARD PAYNE accounted cinches tie for LSC trophy KINGSVILLE, Tex. (AP) Fullback Don Hardeman and running back Larry Collins scored two touchdowns each as undefeated Texas rolled to its ninth football victory of the season Saturday, a 34-14 Lone Star Conference win over Sam Houston State. The victory assured Texas top-ranked in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), at least a tie for the LSC title.

The drive was climaxed by a 10-yard pass from quarterback Rick Worley to Mike King on fourth down. Lynn Bilberry's PAT cut the SWT lead to 17-7 with 5:21 left in the third period.

Worley did a good Job for the Jackets, completing 19 of 40 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown. But he was ln tercepted three times, a statistic which could have been partially eliminated had Jacket receivers held on to the ball. The Jackets never did un- track their rushing attack, partly because of the soggy field, which yielded poor traction, and partly because of a stout SWT defense. Freshman Willie Phea was the only HPU rusher with any success when he got 78 yards in 28 carries. Mike Lambert, HPU tight end, had a good afternoon.

He dazzled the fans with a couple of spectacular catches and wound up with seven for 102 yards. King snared four for 51 yards, Altogether, the Jackets had 309 yards of total offense which bespeaks the trouble they had moving the ball into the end zone. SWT had 320 yards, 270 rushing and the other 50 passing, IN THE FIRST half, the Bobcats took command of the situation after Leon Savage picked off a Worley pass which should have been caught. The ball bounced out of the Intended HPU receiver's hands right into Savage breadbasket. Savage fell forward for a yard, setting up Southwest Texas in excellent field position at the HPU 47.

From there the big 'Cats marched to the HP 10 where Carl Andreas put SWT ahead with a 26-yard field goal with 8:10 left in the first quarter. After the field goal, the teams traded punts until the hosts put together another scoring drive which covered 62 yards in only SMU II First Downs Rushes-yards Passing Yards Return Yards Passes Punts Fumbles lost Penalties yards Texas 19 65J30 70 20 5 152 346 11 686 0 so 000 8-27 62 679 Texas SMU 0 0 7 7-M 1 9 0 2-18 Jerry Honore's second one-yard touchdown run of the day. SMU is 6-3 overall and 3-2 in SWC play. Playing in a steady rain be- fore 44,463 brave souls in the Cotton Bowl SMU took advantage of a monumental break In the first quarter on a fumble by Mustang fullback David Bostick. The ball squirted forward 13 yards and Roan plucked It off the soggy Astroturf and rolled for the touchdown. A fumble recovery by Kelcher, who made 18 tackles in the game, set up a 21-yard field goal by Ted Thompson. SMU made it 16-0 at halftime on Ricky Wesson's 2-yard run.

The touchdown was set up on an intercepted pass returned 43 yards by Thompson. The 6-5, 275-pound Kelcher roamed from sideline to sideline, fending away blocks from the brawny Aggie offensive line to make tackle after tackle. The Mustangs shut down the Aggie offense effectively in the first half and the Cadet scoring punch picked up only when Honore, the hero of last week's victory over Arkansas, entered the game for the first time in the third quarter. Honore gained 65 yards on 16 carries in the second half as he attempted to rally the hard- pressed Cadets. which entered the game as the second best defensive team in the nation, by allowing an average of only 204 yards per contest, surrendered 225 yards to the Mustangs on the ground.

Ironically, SMU tried only two passes but each was ruled out because of inter- ferences by the Aggie defense. Wayne Morris was the workhorse for the Mustangs against the muscular Aggie defensive line, carrying 19 times for 112 yards. SMU was effective in collaring heralded halfback Bubba Bean, who gained only 74 yards in 16 trips over the slippery turf. All the SMU points resulted from Aggie mistakes. was charged with interference twice on SMU's first touchdown drive which resulted in Bostick's fumble and Roan's alert touchdown run.

Kelcher's fumble recovery led to Thompson's field goal and Thompson's interception preceded Wesson's touchdown romp. Frustrated Baylor bombs 'Horns three plays. Big play in the thrust was a 50-yard strike from Lary Frank to Robert Miller. Frank had pulled in the HPU linebackers and secondary with a play action fake into the middle, then dropped back and hit the wide open Miller. Miller daught it about the 30 and outran what few defenders there were to give the "Cats another score with 1:04 left in the opening quarter.

Andress gave SWT a 10-0 cushion with his kick. SWT'S SECOND touchdown followed a Howard Payne fumble which was recovered by Savage on the Bobcat 3. The Jackets had put together their only drive of the half which penetrated to the SWT 9. Tailback Phea took a handoff from Worley, burst up the middle to the 3 only to see the ball squirt loose. It took the Bobcats only 5 plays to cover the 97 yards.

Quarterback Frank got five yards around end, but pitched out as he was hit to Kevin Jurgajtis, who turned on the afterburners and roared for the final score. Andress 1 kick was true, giving the hosts a 17-0 advantage at halftime. Howard Payne was led defensively by Elray Evans, who figured in 10 tackles, and his running mate, Aesse Tello, who was credited with 12. Defensive end David Smith was in on 13 tackles and defensive back Robert Quails picked off a pass and recovered a fumble. WACO, Tex (AP) Baylor wiped out 18 years of bitter frustration Saturday as quarterback Neal Jeffrey pierced the Texas secondary for twp 'touchdown passes and ran for another score in a 34-24 Southwest Conference football victory.

Baylor's first victory over Texas since 1956 gives the Bears a shot at their first SWC title In 50 years and their first trip to the Cotton Bowl, which was started as a post-season classic in 1937. A five-yard penalty gave Baylor a crucial first down after the Longhorns had apparently stopped Steve Beaird short of a first down. Jeffrey scored on fourth down on a oneyard run. The senior quarterback from Overland Park, hit Ricky Thompson on a 54-yard pass play to bring the score to 24-21.

Baylor took the lead moments later after Ron Burns belted Texas quarterback Marty Akins who fumbled at the Texas 33. Phillip Kent scooted six yards on a reverse for a 28-24 Baylor lead. The Wildcats pushed their record to 6-3 for the season and 5-2 in the conference. Tarleton dropped to 1-8 for the year and 0-7 In conference.

Low rifled two of his touchdown passes to split end David Henson. WACO, Tex. (AP) Texas Coach Darrell Royal paid a rare visit to an opposing team's dressing room Saturday to tell the victorious Baylor Bears he hoped they win the Southwest Conference football title. "As sick as I am," over Texas' 34-24 loss to Baylor, Royal said, "I told their team after the game that if we can't win the conference I hope Baylor does. They've waited a long time." Fifty years to be exact, since 1924.

"Don't look back-go all the way," Royal told the happy, shouting Bears. Baylor's upset victory, stunning in that the Bears overcame a 24-7 Texas lead in the second half, pushed their record in the SWC to 3-1, with games left against Texas Tech, Southern Methodist and Rice, Texas fell to 3-2 and must play Texas Christian and Texas A team with two losses has never won the SWC. Texas now 4-1, would have to lose for Baylor to get the Cotton Bowl invitation since the Aggies beat the Bears. "The championship was on the line," said Baylor Coach Grant Teaff. "They've closed out all the other bowls on us.

I guess the Cotton Bowl is the only one left," The SWC winner automatically goes to the Cotton Bowl, and Baylor has never represented the conference in that post-season classic, which began in years after Baylor's last title. "As far as moving forward our program, I'd have to say it's the greatest victory," said Teaff. "One of the things that makes it great is that I have so much respect for Darrell and their program. It's a class op- Brownwood Bulletin SPORTS Sunday, November 10,1974 Page 1-B eration." One other memorable occasion when Royal visited a team that had Just beaten the Longhorns was in 1964 when Arkansas nipped Texas 14-13, in a game that cost Texas its second consecutive national championship. Texas defensive tackle Doug English said Baylor quarterback Neal Jeffrey, who hit 20 of 31 passes for 351 yards, was a "super passer." But, said Texas punter Mike Dean, "where it all started" was when Baylor defenders blocked his punt, setting up the Bears' second touchdown.

Baylor opened the scoring on a short pass from Jeffrey to Alcy Jackson, who carried it 69 yards for a touchdown.

The loss almost certainly eliminated Texas' hopes for a seventh consecutive SWC championship and also dampened a possible alternative bid to the Longhorns from the Gator Bowl. The Baylor victory was made possible by an aroused defense in the second half which held Texas, the nation's third leading rushing team, to 52 yards on the ground and a total offense of 80 yards. The Bears scored 27 points to Texas' zero in the final two quarters. The game, played in a drizzle which further dampened the already wet artificial turf, was unusual In that Texas stayed in an offense which featured two tight ends until the fourth quarter. Baylor countered with a goal-line type defense that had nine men on the line of scrimmage with two defensive backs only five yards deep. Jeffrey completed 20 of 31 passes for 351 yards with only one interception. It appeared for a brief time that Baylor Coach Grant Teaff had given up on Jeffrey after he threw his lone interception as sub Mark Jackson ran a series of plays. Baylor's victory was its fifth against three losses and extended its SWC mark to 3-1.

So stout was the Tech defense that the hapless Horned Frogs could register only one first down In the first two quarters and didn't get their second one until several minutes had expired in the second half.
