hander was drafted by the Phillies last and released late in spring training He signed with the Mets and spent April and May in Port St Lucie Johnston played his senior year of high school baseball at Napa High School In Napa California He was 8-1 even though was out of action for five weeks with tendnitiS' is his elbow Buhe Ostopowicz Johnston Tim McClinton (Third baseOutfield) McClin-ton grew up in the Chicago area and played baseball at Donners Grove North High He hit 390 his senior year and showed a combination of speed and power with six homers and 20 stolen bases in 30 games He also had 35 RBIMc-Clinton short but strong will split time between the outfield and third base for the Wallace Minnifield (Outfield) Minnifield is a 20-year old seocnd-year pro from Bowdon Ga He played in 45 games last year with the Sarasota Mets and batted 173 in 127 at bats Minnifield was not drafted out of high school but was signed as a free-agentIn high school he made the All-County team four consecutive seasons and was MVP his senior year when he 529 with 20 homers and 22 stolen bases Hector Carrasco (Pitcher) Carrasco will be the -Kingsport Mets opening night starter Monday-' The right-hander from the Dominican Repubr lie has a sometimes overpowering fastball which he used to keep his ERA under 200 in the Mets extended spring season vs othgE rookie clubs Carrasco pitched for Coast League All-Star teamir 1988 He batted 291 in 58 games before promoted to Kingsport for the last two games" of the season He was the top all-round slugger for the Sarasota club in 1988 with a high aver- age and leading the club (fourth in the in RBI with 34Harris a catcher who wTts signed out of St John the Baptist High School in Queens NY has been moved to firstbase Ed Vazquez (Pitcher) Vazquez is a 20-year old right-handed pitcher from the Bronx New York In high school baseball Vazquez was named to the Knickerbocker Conference All-Star team two years Vazquez has pitched against solid competition having traveled to the Dominican Republic two times with the New York Hispanic League He has also pitched against the Puerto Rican Olympic team I Danny Apchard (Pitcher) Auchard is a 6-2 lefthander out of Tracy California a city of 20000 east of San FranciscoThe 19-year old pitcher was 9-0 his senior year in high school and posted a 143 ERAThose were impressive enough credentials to be named All-League his last year of high school baseball Auchard will be part of an 11-man pitching staff for the 1989 Chris Butler (Pitcher) Butler is part of a tall" K-Met pitching The 6-6 right-hander is one of four pitchers taller than 6-4 on the staff Butler is from Marietta Ga and was signed out high school as New 23rd pick in the 1988 draftButler finished with a 1-4 record in sota last year with a 476 ERA He was second -on the team in innings pitched and should fig ure as a prominent member of the 1989 K-Mets: Butler Brook Fordyce (Catcher) New third-round draft choice passed up a baseball scholarship to Clemson for a shot at pro baseball A 400 hitter in high school ball in Connecticut Fordyce never thought he would be drafted as high as the third round He was a four-year starter in high school and was named All-State three years Reid Hartmann (Second baseman) Hartman played for the Saraosta Mets last summer immediately after being drafted out of Me-remec Junior College in the St Louis area Hartmann was New 42nd pick overall' The 21-year-old infielder hit 239 with the Sara-" sota club last year in 34 games In junior' college he was named to his team I Fordyce it Tom Engle (Pitcher) Engle was New second round draft pick out of Lancaster Ohio The 6-3 230-pound righthander was overpowering his senior season with six consecutive no-hitters He compiled a 29-4 record over four seasons at Fairfield Union High-'- School Engle averaged 15 strikeouts per game He was also an outstanding quarterback on the football team throwing for 1600 yarjjs while leading Fairfield to a 8-2 record Mike Lehnerz (Pitcher) Lehnerz is expected to part of the Mets five-man rotation Lehnerz is from Denver Colorado and was New ninth pick in the June 1988 draftLehnerz a 6-5 right-hander pitched in Sarasota last year and was 0-2 with a 771 ERA with 28 innings pitched After a shaky start in the Gulf Coast Leafue Lehnerz finished strong He was an All-League pitcher while attending Regis Jesuit High School in Denver ehnerz Engle Nicky Davis (First baseman) This is is second year in professional baseball He played for the 1988 Sarasota Mets in 1988 and hit 212 in the Gulf Coast League The 6-4 Davis was drafted out of Merritt Island High School (Fla) and was New 16th round draft choice in the June draft He will split time at first base with James Harris Randy Niemann (Pitching Coach) The 33-year-old Niemann has moved up to the next level the organization with most of tne pitchers he instructed last year in Sarasota of the Gulf Coast LeagueNiemann a 6-5
