South Bend Ind to play Notre Dame next week CHESTNUT HILL Mass Boston College took advantage of the inexperience of backup quarterbacks and rammed the ball down the throats offensively Saturday to post a 20-18 upset victory over the 13th-ranked Vols Boston College which lost by two touchdowns to Rutgers two weeks ago and by three at home to West Virginia last week dominated the game against a Tennessee team that was playing without regular quarterback Jeff Francis Backups Randy Sanders and Sterling Henton fared poorly in stead combining for just 12 completions in 30 attempts for 166 yards They were intercepted three times Sanders was intercepted twice in the first quarter and taken from the game while Henton replaced him and managed just 12 of 27 and had his final pass intercepted as the game ended Boston College knowing the Vols lacked the passing efficiency of Francis stacked up against the run and limited the Vols to just 111 yards rushing Boston College had been giving up an average of 218 yards per game on the ground Freshman Reggie Cobb was the only spark the Vols had on the ground finishing with 85 yards on 19 carries and scoring both Tennessee touchdowns in the second half It was more a failure on the part of the defense than it was the offense however as the lethargic Vols gave up 343 rushing yards to the Eagles including 177 on 39 carries by tailback Jim Bell
