The Oklahoma county school clothing drive conducted for Goodwin Industries Oklahoma's training shops for the handicapped returned 32272 full bags of clothing which was a 54 per cent return on the bags distributed Gov Raymond Gary clothing drive chairman assisted by members of Disabled Veterans Chapter 29 Oklahoma City and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1857 and the Auxiliary of VFW Post 1857 helped to unload the 28 contributed trucks who helped to transport the materials into Goodwill Industries plant 410 SW 3 in Oklahoma City Kerr Junior High School Participates In Pawnee Parade the front porches for Goodwill signal being an up-turned broom Goodwill Industries' volunteers will not take the broom In behalf of the over 150 physically handicapped people at Goodwill Industries we would like to say "Thanks for the wonderful response given to this the 1958 annual clothing drive" for them have their first annual old clothes round-up for Goodwill Industries The drive will be concluded on Sunday May 18 when the Sertoma club in all of north Oklahoma City Kiwanis club in Capitol Hill Lions club in Del City Key club in Bethany and several other civic club groups will go from door to door and collect clothing that is left on Several large employee groups of various agencies and companies throughout Oklahoma City are co-operating in a May 1 clothing round-up which includes city employees county employees federal employees and many private business employee groups On May 15 and 16 Tinker Field employees civilian and military numbering over 24000 will Steed School flews By JOHN MARTIN The first annual massed choir festival of the Midwest City Elementary Schools was held Thursday night at 8:00 o'clock in the Midwest City High School auditorium The group consisted of the selected choirs of each of the grade schools in our system The group practiced each afternoon at the high school in preparation for the event The program consisted of 18 numbers envided into five sections One part was composed of patriotic songs one was American folk songs and the final section was perhaps the most show tunes Directors of the various chourses participated in the festival by announcing directing or accompanied the group Our director Mrs Nancy Smith was one of the announcers The group was accompanied by on Grand piano Everyone who attended greatly enjoyed the concert and we certainly were happy that our fifth and sixth graders could participate The annual monthly meeting Cub Scout Pack 67 will be Monday night May 5 at 7:00 at Steed School Theme for the program is "Keeping America Beautiful" and appropriate skits will be given Cubmaster Floyd Walker urges all Cub Scouts who are members of this pack to be present especially those who are to receive awards Parents too are urged to attend The membership drive for the YMCA is now in full effect and we hope that if you are interested in joining you will contact some member of our team Mr Austin is the to the public Our teacher for this week is Mrs Eloise Bailey second grade teacher Mrs Bailey is teaching at Steed for the first time after previously having taught at Westside Sooner and Midwest City High School She taught four years at Duncan Oklahoma before coming here this year Mrs Bailey's husband Buster is employed at Midwest City High School She received her BS Degree from East Central State College in Ada Oklahoma and her Masters degree from the University of Oklahoma Concerning her teaching experiences Mrs Bailey has this to say "I enjoy teaching because I love children My happiest moments are to see the light in my pupils eyes when they ave learned something new VFW Poster Winners Are Announced Local winners in the "What The American Flag Means TO Me" poster contest are: 1st School Kerr Junior High Band Lauded by Judges At State Finds Contest Meet at tioiman Del City Driving Program to Have "Cowboy and Indian" workers In the Tinker Area YMCA Membership Campaign met for the first report session last Tuesday evening at Sooner School to count "scalps" and "branded sLeers" in the annual contest for new and renewed memberships The three Cowboy Divisions brought In a total of 159 members to lead the campaign while the three Indian Divisions reported only 57 members Campaign chairman Claude "The Wheel" Wheeler said that the campaign was ahead of last year at the first report meeting High Cowboy Division at the first report was led by Big Boss Elmer "Fence line" Hedge Low Cowboy Division was Boss Ben "Surefire' Kennedy's outfit High Indian Division was led by Big Chief Hugh "Whiperacker" Emerson Low Indian Division was led by Chief Jiggs "Gassy" Ray Enthusiasm at the big Pow Wow was sparked by two challenges which were issued at the kick-off meeting last Friday morning Big Indian Chief "Go Go" Sutton forfeited a shirt tail to Big Boss Elmer "Fenceline" Hedge when his Seminoles brought in fewer memberships than the Dry Long handled shears performed the ceremony and "Fence line" Hedee was busy collecting autographs of witnesses to the conquest Another challenge paid off with a shirt tail was Cowboy Boss Vernon "Dude" Newell who forfeited his shirt tail to Indian Chief "Whiperacker" Emershon when the Wranglers' outfit failed to produce as many members as the Chickasaw tribe High production team in the cowboys was pace setter Glenn Breeding's Powder River outfit which reported "over the top" at the first report High production team of the Indians was Rev Charles Groves' Chickasaw tribe The next report meeting Is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 5:00 pm at Sooner School Two challenges for high production at the end of the second report will pit "Gassy" Ray's Cheyenne Indian team against Ben "Surefire" Kennedy's Cowboy Shortgrass team Losing Division Leader will forfeit a shirt tall A team challenge by Lester Goldsborough's Cherokee tribe against VI Sneed's Red Raiders will find the loser paying off with a shirt tail Other challenges Include Cowboy "Tail Twister" Schteiner against Indian "Tail Twister" Sims for a shirt tail for total production at the end of the campaign A final campaign dinner was set up at which time losing Division leaders agreed to foot the expense of the dinner Teams of workers in the campaign will continue to enroll members through-out this week and next week Report meetings are scheduled on Tuesday and Fridav evenings May 6 and May 9 Campaign Chairman Claude Wheeler says that any one interested in membership for his child or family may contact him or the office and a campaign worker will be glad to talk with him about it Television Showing Its Time to File School Transfer Applications Now Patrons application for transfers of pupils from Oklahoma County dependent elementary schools to independent hig school districts are by law required to be filed with the County Superintendent of School not later than May 15th of each year If you have not already sent in your transfers please do so at once Transfer blanks are available at your school or in my office room 4 County Building Let me emphasize that these applications for transfers are necessary only for the dependent elementary driver-pedestrian education program to reduce traffic accidents will be shown on statewide educational television May 1 Del City was selected for the program because of its outstanding instruction in the teaching of public safety Faculty members and students will share honors on the telecast over KETA-TV originating from Nor man Thursday night at 7:30 The program will be part of a series called 'Schools in Quickstep" sponsored weekly by the Oklahoma Education association Teamed up for the staging are Standifer Keas in charge of curriculum Jack Hobbs in charge of driver and safety education April 24 and 25 Miss Ilildegarde Stucrmer sentor was declared winner of the local contest She will compete in the greater Oklahoma City contest with the winner receiving a $25 savings bond and a recently Bruce Murdoch and Paul Barris received superior ratings on their clarinet solos Mary Ann Smith received superior rating on her flute solo John Meyer received excellent on his alto saxophone solo A flute trio composed of Eloise CrIppe Mary Ann Smith and Frances Baldridge received excellent rating Band director is Jack Irwin VFW to Sponsor Little League Nine Commander Joe Epperly of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 9969 pointed out the fact that well over 7000 VFW posts across the nation are sponsoring a Youth activities program as part of their efforts in Community service Not only does this observation mean that over five million American youngsters are being served in this program but that literally thousands of our comrades are serving in the capacity of youth leaders in the administration of this program Commander Epperly invites the attention of all parents of boys 8 to 12 years old in the Del City-Midwest City area to the fact that VFW Post 9969 located at 4812 SE Jarman Rockets Get Tie in Conference The Jarman Rockets cinched a tie for the conference championship Friday at Monroney by defeating them by a 9-1 score Buddy Hannon pitched a strong game allowing only one hit and striking out 12 men He was backed up by good hitting on the part of his mates Joe Provine hit a home rim Bobby Oregon' a triple Preston Farris a double James Rounds jr director who spent his first 10 years in this system as the bandmaster of Midwest City high school bands and resigned because of ill health some three years ago has regained his strength and normal self and organized this band from the seventh and eighth graders two years ago as the first truly independent band In Kerr Junior high school His byword for all of his students "Results not excuses" is truly the law of the band The results were as follows: Concert band superior sight reading band excellent plus student conductors Eckel and John Johnson superior plus and superior Eckel bassoon solo superior Virginia Ferguson alto sax solo excellent plus Jim Bill student conductor excellent and Ronald Tate student conductor good The band is now busy preparing for its annual trip to the tristate festival at Enid which is national in scope after which a public concert is being planned to be held in the Del City high school auditorium Immediately following the close of school Mr Rounds has
