waiving the admission charge to the game between the Cardinals and the Bristol Tigers Door prizes will be given away By RAY GLIER Times-News Sports Writer For the record the game took 2 hours and 40 minutes But as things turned out it took Princeton just 15 minutes to dispose of the Mets Thursday night The Pirates scored seven runs in the first inning and made that stand up for a 7-4 win before 647 at Fred Johnson Stadium cutting off the Mets three-game winning streak Austin Manahan hit a two-run homer as the second batter and Armando Romero bashed a grand slam later in the inning to key triumph and ruin the first start of the season by Archie Corbin But while the K-Mets took a fall a sparkling relief job by Luciano Medina and John Hudson provided some cushion Medina 5 innings 3 hits) and Hudson (3 innings no hits) silenced the visitors bats with 8' shutout innings That at least gave the Mets a crack at a comeback win But after scoring four runs in the fifth bats went back in the rack as Princeton received some glittering relief work itself from Garland Slaughter Craig Juran and Bias Minor (2 hits 0 runs in 4Vi innings) should have scored earlier than we did before their relief pitchers got in said Vince Zawaski who drove in his 19th run of the season second best in the league first guy was throwing nothing but fastballs and we should have scored early As it was Princeton scored all the runs early Romero highlighted the first inning assault by hitting a 3-2 fastball from Corbin over the right-field fence with the bases loaded was a good pitch from where I said Pirates manager Jim Thrift who was in the third base coaches box was low he just turned on Princeton got nothing done after that Medina who joined the team last week brought a nice curveball with him to the mound in relief of Corbin in the first The right-hander from the Dominican Republic who gave up seven runs in two innings in his first action Saturday in Bluefield (a 17-2 loss) struck out five Please see METS page 3C CINCINNATI Danny Jack-son scattered seven hits over 6 1-3 innings to beat Philadelphia for the fourth time this season and Chris Sabo singled home a pair of runs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-2 victory over the struggling Phillies Thursday night Jackson 10-4 allowed only two runs to continue his mas- tery of the Phillies The lefthander has allowed 14 hits and five earned runs in his four starts against Philadelphia covering 33 1-3 innings He had stopped Philadelphia on a pair of two-hitters and a three-hitter in his previous starts He became the first pitcher to beat the Phillies four times in a season since Joe Nuxhall did it in 1965 Jeff Treadway hit a solo homer and Sabo drove in two runs with a tie-breaking single in the third off right-hander Kevin Gross 8-5 to send the Phillies to their fifth consecutive loss and their sixth in seven games Jackson Sabo and shortstop Barry Larkin were the players named Thursday to the NL All-Star team Bob camps where he was left with the impression that he was going to get to play But the Indians no one had room But through the encouragement of Elizabethton manager Ray Smith Meredith stayed after it and has finally landed his contract going to be an infielder even though in college I played said Meredith a native of Campbell Calif played infield in high school but coach Stout need me there got a call from an scout and he asked why I play infield at the tryouts That got me tuned up for when I did That was just a small part of the role the Indians played in what had turned out to be a long soap opera for Meredith who expected to be drafted in June thought I was going to be an Indian last he said tried out with them at Cardinal Park and I did 1 JOHNSON CITY Former East Tennessee State
