The Paris News Monday, August 2,1993 5A 3 Murder investigation reopened Photo by Michael Tribble TIME OUT Taking in the shade are James Veal and Billy Lofticu, both drivers at the Tractor Pull this weekend. The event was sponsored by the Lamar County Young Farmers. ALICE, Texas (AP) Officials have reopened the 1974 fatal shooting of an Alice police officer after learning a contract was put out on the officer several months earlier, but authorities said they're unsure if they'll be unravel the case. Officer Matthew Murphy, 33, was shot four times during a routine traffic stop Dec. 1, 1974.

He was the first and still the only Alice officer to die while on the job. No one was ever arrested in the shooting. Now, Murphy's then-partner says he's willing to be hypnotized to remember details of a conversation with a suspected drug dealer "that may provide clues in the unsolved murder. Albert "Tito" Bernal was a civilian officer in May 1974 when he was teamed with Murphy on an undercover drug investigation. Bernal, who later became a uniformed officer in Alice and now works at a Beeviiie post office, says their investigation ended after a suspect said a contract was out for the lives of the officers.

"(The suspect) said, 'I hope it's not true, but they say you're a narc, you and your I said, 'Do I look like one of those guys? Get me some tecate (a slang word for heroin)," Bernal recalled. Bemal said the person refused to sell him anything, and he returned to the car, where Murphy was waiting. Bemal told him they needed to leave immediately and their work was finished. Seven months later, Murphy was shot and killed. Police recently reopened their investigation into the murder.

Several people, including a suspected gunman who's already in prison, have been interviewed. Alice Police Chief Jack Compton is encouraged by BernaFs tip. "It's significant," Compton said. "Obviously, if somebody knew of a contract, they knew where it came from."
