Rozier scored three touchdowns JEFFERSON CITY The Carson-Newman Eagles finally got on the winning track last night claiming a 15-8 South Atlantic Conference victory over Elon Carson-Newman ranked fifth in NAIA last year bolted out to a 15-0 lead in the first three quarters Brad Bell carried one in from five yards in the first (arter Ronny Wilson caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Bell in the second quarter and Doug Jennings kicked a 35-yard goal in the third Elon who won the NAIA national championship in 1981 and 1982 could only manage six points when Jesse Jones caught a 40-yard pass from Sam From-hart The conversion failed Larry Smith led the Eagles in rushing gaining 49 yards on 21 attempts Mark Isom was top defensive player collecting eight tackles five assists five quarterback sacks two fumble recoveries and two broken passes Carson-Newman outrushed Eton 150-83 and outpassed the Christians 107-70 The Eagles will host Catawba next Saturday at 7:30 pm at Burke-Tarr Stadium Appalachian State 27 Tha Cltadal 16 CHARLESTON SC (UPI) Running backs Cliff Reid and Alvin Parker combined for 120 yards and three touchdowns to lead Appalachian State to a Southern Conference win The Mountaineers scored on five of their first six possessions raising their record to 2-0 in the conference and 3-0 overall The Citadel playing its first league game dropped to 1-2 overall in the regionally-televised football game Appalachian State which upset Division I-A member Wake Forest in its season opener coasted to a 24-7 halftime lead and overcame a school-record passing performance by Citadel quarterback Robert Hill Parker who rushed for 48 yards scored twice on 3-yard runs while Reid opened the scoring on a 9-yard sweep for a touchdown and finished with 72 yards Hill a junior who was a backup quarterback last year completed 30 of 45 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns The completions and attempts were new Citadel records Furman 31 Marshall 7 GREENVILLE SC (UPI) Tailback Stanford Jennings rushed for 108 yards to break the Furman career rushing record and lead the Paladins to a 31-7 victory over Marshall Saturday in a Southern Conference game Jennings last Southern Conference player of the year broke the school record of 3038 yards set by Larry Robinson in 1976 Furman 2-1 scored early in the first quarter and never trailed against the Thundering Herd which fell to 1-3 Keven Esval connected on a 41-yard field goal int he first quarter to put Furman ahead 3-0 The Paladins increased their lead to 10-0 later in the period when quarterback David Char-pia threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Chas Fox Charpia who missed first two games with a sprained thumb rushed for 61 yards and completed 7 of 11 passes for 109 yards Robbie Garnder scored Furman's second touchdown on a 2-yard plunge with 1:27 left in the half Early in the third quarter senior flanker Billy Risher caught a 27-yard touchdwon pass from Charpia to make it 24-0 Furman touchdown was the 16th of his career trying another school record Jennings rounded out the scoring for Furman in the fourth quarter with a 4-yard run Marshall scored its lone touchdown late in the game when Emory to only 9 yards rushing scored all of its points in the first half with a pair of touchdown passes from Ty Vandegraft and two field goals by Dan Peyton Emory Henry committed eight turnovers scored two touchdowns last night to lead fifth-ranked Alabama to a 44-24 victory over Southeastern Conference rival Vanderbilt The undefeated Crimson Tide spotted Vanderbilt 17 first-quarter points and then scored on the next six possessions over the second and third periods to smash the hopes for an upset The triumph was the third in a row for Alabama coach Ray Perkins who succeeded the late Bear Bryant last year The Tide is 2-0 in SEC play while Vanderbilt dropped to 1-2 overall and 0- I in league play Lewis ended the night by running 12 times for 90 yards and completing 11 of 26 passes for 184 yards Lewis scored on runs of 1 and II yards as the Tide exploded for 17 points in the second period to erase the 17-0 lead Kicker Van Tiffin added a 33-yard field goal Florida (No 13) Mississippi State 12 STARKVILLE Miss (UPI) Wayne Peace passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns and John Williams ran for two more scores to lead 13th-ranked Florida to victory Peace who completed 21 of 34 passes connected on a 34-yard toss to Dwayne Dixon with 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter for the first touchdown The 213-pound senior quarterback struck again in the fourth quarter with a 5yard scoring pass to receiver Bee Lang capping in 80-yard drive in 14 plays Sophomore fullback Williams scored both of his touchdowns in the final period racing 70 yards for one and 20 yards for another to shatter any hopes for a comeback by the frustrated Bulldogs who trailed only 14-12 after three quarters John Bond completed eight of 23 passes for 118 yards and rushed for 32 yards for Mississippi State Georgia (No 11) 31 South Carolina 13 ATHENS Ga (UPI) John Lastinger delegated to second string quarterback for his play in first two games replaced injured starter Todd Williams in the second half and passed for one touchdown and ran 37 yards for another to lead the llth-ranked Bulldogs Lastinger took over when Williams suffered a side muscle tear with barely two minutes gone in the second half and followed up a 32-yard pass to tight end Clarence Kay with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kay with 10:40 left in the third quarter Lastinger also led the Bulldogs How the United Press
