applauded for his brilliant play McEnroe required only an hour and 22 minutes to begin defense of his Wirpbledon crown in a match that was far less stormy than the weather In sharp contrast to last year when he engaged in a running war of words with officials from the very first match McEnroe was virtually silent as he went about his business The only storm that erupted came from the heavens when rain caused a delay' of more than an hour and a half after McEnroe broke serve to open the third set am more aware these days of what can happen to me on court and off and I am going out in the right frame of mind not worrying about things that have happened in the McEnroe said were no problems The three Americans seeded behind McEnroe also won in straight sets while Stan Smith playing at Wimbledon for the 17th year created the major upset by outlasting ninth seed Andres Gomez of Ecuador 6-4 6-3 5-7 7-6 Second seed Jimmy Connors recognizing that at 29 "time is running in his bid to win France forced to withdraw from his match against Bob Lutz because of a pulled thigh muscle finalist two years ago got by Gilles Moretton of France 7-6 7 6 6-2 and Denton outlasted fellow American John Sadri 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 3-6 6-3 was relatively McEnroe said feel I hit the ball well I was careless a few times but I played McEnroe saiid he noticed an effort by Wimbledon officials to compromise a bit in their relations with him and other players but added they could convince him of their sincerity by doing two things The first would be to make him a member of the club Mats Wilander the 17-year-old French Open champion from Sweden and the seventh seed at Wimbledon beat Heinz Guenthardt of Switzerland 6-4 6-3 3-6 6-3 Also advancing were No 13 seed Brian Gottfried and No sporting a mustache this year says pleased with the players the parent New York Met organization has sent here have a very strong pitching says Olsen be happier with them had two instrasquad games one 11 innings and the other 8 innings and we had only three walks in those 19 innings And two of those walks were on 3-2 counts should turn our pitching completely around from last Olsen is lacking muscle in his hitting lineup but says he has some good hitters got a few who make good contact but lacking the long-ball says Olsen have anyone who can take it out of the Russ Orrick a 5-9 175-pound holdover from last year is the closest thing to a power hitter He hit a three-run home run in one of the intrasquad games Ken Harris the third baseman is perhaps the best bet for a high average hits with says Olsen stings the ball He should be a mainstay for us He was assigned to Little Falls or Shelby last year broke a hand and play much so they sent him here this Second baseman Rick Diaz is another good hitter as is Carl Hollis a utility infielder who will start in center field tonight because of the hustle shown in workouts Other hitters who have been impressive are Ken Bodle who will open in right field starting catcher A1 Carmichael and shortstop Jerry Young was the No 5 pick and just got says Olsen only 17 but a big-league prospect The raw talent is there got the potential if
