4C Kingsport Times-News Thursday September 9 1982 Briefly reading? Teen girls still go for boy catchers clubs Pilot Club elects Mrs Cartwright: Eiva Cartwright 1430 Linville St has succeeded Ernestine Morelock as president of the Pilot Club of Kingsport Inc Mrs Cartwright will serve until next June due to Mrs recent relocation Mrs Cartwright attended the convention of Pilot International in Chicago earlier this summer as a representative of the local women's service club lifestyles By ROSE DeWOLF Knight-Rldder Service Last year parents fretted because their young lovelies were reading books with plots centered around incest child abuse and revenge The books Flowers in the Attic Petals on the Wind and If There Be Thorns are paperback novels by (for Virginia) (for Cleo) Andrews and her audience is largely teen-age and female The three books tell the continuing saga of the Dolleng-anger children who when first introduced have been locked in an attic by their weird mother They live there for three years during which time 17-year-old Chris falls for his 14-year-old sister Cathy In the second book the kids escape and Cathy tries to forget her brother by having other affairs including one with her second husband By the third book Chris and Cathy are together again living as husband and wife while her older son gets involved in assorted other strange doings Literary critics called the Andrews books trashy (when they bothered to mention them at all) Some public libraries did not lend them And many parents complained publicly that the stories were and Even so 37 million Andrews books were sold last year alone and continue to sell The publisher Pbcket Books Inc says 60 percent of the buyers were and are teen-age girls Psychologists wondered why this would be so Were adolescents attracted by the idea of being trapped by and breaking away from parents? Was it something to do with growing sexual awareness? Or are they jurt taken with tales that terrify? Salesmen for Dell Publishing Co believe the latter They noticed that teens mostly girls are the best customers for all books of horror why they suggested that their company put out a line of books that would scare the kids without upsetting their parents As a result Dell will be publishing something called Twilight this October These will be scary stories that avoid religious themes minimize the violence and exclude Explicit sex Plot lines dealing with teenagers and sex explicit and otherwise were exactly what caused another brouhaha over the reading habits of the junior high set In that case the author involved was Judy Blume Some parents were aghast when they discovered that in book Deenie junior high school girls pass around a book on sex and ask questions like: What does sexual intercourse feel like? They were ever more outraged about Forever in which the teen-age heroine goes to bed with a boy and then instead of dying from shame or childbirth goes off to college Teens are still reading Blume Some parents are still complaining Which brings us to this controversy At the recent American Library Convention in Philadelphia there was a debate about whether librarians should aid and abet teen-age girls in obtaining paperback romances The particular paperbacks popular this year are emphatically innocent romantic tales featuring a teen-age heroine She is usually a small-town girl of 15 or 16 The boy involved is usually older maybe 17 They meet they kiss all) and the Big Question is: Will they end up going steady? (The answer is usually yes) Even when the plot is more complicated not by much One book tells of Marcy who has known good old Brian since she was a toddler She is dazzled by Roy the sophisticated stranger from the big city But in the end she realizes that Brian is a better bet Another is about Beth who gets a crush on her young good-looking English teacher worry They part as Beth goes off to college and also no doubt to a more meaningful relationship What fault could a librarian find in such fare you ask? Well according to Evie Wilson a Tampa Fla librarian and president of the Young Adult Service Division of the American Library Association some oppose the books because they Others are uncomfortable with their common message that the only goal for a girl is a guy The Council on Interracial Books for Children has called the books sexist But most librarians Wilson insists share her own view that it is better for young people to read than not to read And if these books lure teens into reading then other failings must be forgiven (The librarians incidentally tend to agree with her critics about Andrews but generally defend Blume Cuyahoga County Ohio librarian Vivian Wynne claims most of the Blume uproar was stirred by a of parents) But it seems plain that whether the debate is about an innocent romance a not-so-innocent romance or a downright horrible romance the fact remains that all of these contretemps involve teen-age girls not boys According to Christy Tyson of the Spokane Wash library teen-age boys read adult adventures mysteries sports stories and science fiction In other words boys want to read about men catching crooks spies and spaceships Girls (still) want to read about girls catching boys As to why there are no controversies raging over what boys read Wynne believes it is "because boys read a greater diversity of books than the girls There are books aimed specifically at boys that are criticized by librarians she says The Conan the Barbarian series for example And the same parents who are upset about the Judy Blume books may also be upset about JD Catcher in the Rye But somehow when it comes to teen-age males no one trend seems to loom large enough to get much attention Walking most popular sport: Walking is a nice sport Other than decent shoes you need a lot of fancy coordinated gear or costly equipment It bother your ears or your knees like swimming and running and you need to pay for an expensive court or battle crowds at a health club All of which has combined to make walking No 1 activity according to American Health magazine More than 5 million Americans walk to and from work without depending on cars or public transportation according to United States Census data Always a solution: This story evidentally has made the rounds but it just goes to show that creativity sometimes pays off it seems that an unnamed university professor somewhere out West was fed right up to there with the whims and of her department chairman When the last straw finally came she scanned the help-wanted ads in the Chronicle of Higher Education the Chronicle reports although she herself did not feel in a position to leave After studying the ads she decided which openings would be most suitable for her unpopular supervisor She then secretly copied the resume and shipped copies of it off to various academic search committees Then I just waited and hoped and prayed they liked this creep enough to take the she is quoted as saying Evidently someone did and is now a highly placed official at another institution out of state Problem solved and everyone lives happily ever after No cooking in space: Even the Russian male is feeling the sting of liberation these days Although the official reason for sending a woman to join the cosmonauts on Salyut 7 was because presence of a woman exerts an enobling effect on the microclimate of the small the cosmonauts thought there might be another reason No they thinking of a little cosmic hanky-panky or at least they talking about it if they were According to Aviation Week Space Technology the formerly all-male crew thought it was gaining a built-in cook and bottle washer Station commander Anatoly Berezovoy greeted Svetlana Savitskaya with a terrarium of flowers and the suggestion that she cook meals for all five cosmonauts But the answer was a quick Savitskaya pointed out details are the responsibility of the host and went about her assigned business Kingsport clubs host to Spartanburg woman BE A FOOL SUDS YOUR DUDS WHERE COOL!
