DENNIS WAGNER Times-News Sports Writer BOONE NC It was billed as a wild-and-wooly affair as East Tennessee State University journeyed to Appalachian State Saturday afternoon and when the dust had settled it was just that And after the final dusk had settled Jack Carlisle's Buccaneers had nosed out a thrilling 3 -31 victory to spoil Homecoming for the Mountaineers before 14471 No one could have asked for any more action there was no room left for it It was the Bum through the air and Appy State on the ground as the two clubs battled tooth-and-nail all afternoon in a game that saw a total of 988 offensive yards And it went right down to the wire also ETSU fell behind 34-28 with only 3:03 showing on the Conrad Stadium clock as Mountaineer quarterback Steve BOON East Ten State Sal was just after a 14-play 68-yard drive David Abernathy's try for the extra point failed and the Bucs had the opening Kingsport's Ronnie Horton brought the ensuing kickoff back to the ET 31 where sensational quarterback Mark Hutsell took over it was just Hutsell's day The junior signal caller who hit 23 of 35 passes on the day went to work a four-yard toss to Ron Boyd and a 14-yarder across the middle to super receiver Arnold Thomas got the Bucs to the 49 after Boyd picked up two on the ground Hutsell came back with the same patterns twice to Arnold for gains of 16 and 20 yards to ASU 13 And then it was Church Hill's Jimmy Dykes who got the call Hutsell hit Dykes out of the backfield for nine Dykes got one on a dive play and then latched on to a three-yard scoring strike from Hutsell to knot the count at 34-34 The pressure was on but Elizabethton place kicker Eddie Pless split the uprights to give ETSU the lead with :47 remaining in the game And it still wasn't over Appy State drove to the Buccaneer 34 with :05 on the clock and it wasn't until Abernathy's 51-yard field goal attempt fell short that the Rues could claim the victory It was like that all day up and down the field ETSU bombed away for 297 yards through the airways and grounded out 148 on the ground The Mountaineers had 361 yards rushing and 180 passing Buc receiver Thomas a 6-0 sophomore had the big day along with Hutsell Thomas latched on to 12 passes for 179 yards his biggest day of the year and Hutsell had two touchdown passes to add on to his credentials Dykes was the leading ground gainer for ETSU with 62 yards on 15 attempts For Appalachian State it was Scott McConnell doing the damage The Mountaineer halfback rushed 20 times for 114 yards and two touchdowns Brown added 80 yards rushing and two TDs E'TSU broke out front in the first quarter The Bucs drove 52 yards in seven plays and Clintwood's Johnny McFall got the air points on a two-yard dive with 3:26 left on the first quarter clock But the favor of walk-on David Rudder came on to lead Tennessee to three fourth-quarter scores Streater guided the Vets 76 yards in 13 plays and went the final 11 yards himself for the first Tennessee TD with 14:44 to go in the game He then spearheaded a 97-yard 12-play drive and passed 21 yards to freshman Anthony Hancock for the second TD with 5:49 to play The final Tennessee score came when Streater guided the Is 55 yards in 10 plays and went the final 15 yards himself on a fourth-down quarterback draw with 1:01 to play The Vo Is tried for two points each time after their touchdown and never came close Streater hit nine of 20 passes for 137 yards and gained another 38 yards rushing to finish with 175 yards total of- ferise With the effort he probably reclaimed his starting job Rudder who played the entire first half and the first series of the second half hit eight of 15 passes for 86 yards and gained another 33 yards rushing Hancock was a bright light for the offense again catching three passes for 56 yards Jeff Moore had four catches for 63 yards But unfortunately for Tennessee all the offensive heroics came too late Mississippi State jumped on Tennessee early moving the ball the Mississippi Bulldogs had soundly beaten Tennessee's Vols 34-21 here Saturday afternoon in a Southeastern Conference contest "Other teams just sit back and wait for us to make mistakes and then capitalize on them They aren't any faster bigger or better than we are Besides a team has to go out and make its own breaks Just because we are Tennessee doesn't mean that people are going to give us
