Johnson Stadium Cardinal first baseman Rod Brewer was named to The Sporting News college All-American team in its most recent issue Cardinals Box surprise of the night was his performance at the plate Weese accounted for the three runs in the second inning when he stroked a bases-loaded double down the left-field line He went the other way three innings later lining a hard shot to right to score two more just as surprised as you said Johnson City manager Dan Radison One Cardinal official attributed the hot bats to some Sunday night batting practice after Johnson City split a double-header with Burlington But Radison didn't concur I think said Radison Radison although pleased with his performance is more interested in instilling discipline into his players of my major jobs here is to create good work said the bespectacled field chief lot of times people are under the impression that working hard They think they can come out here and take batting practice 15 swings and all they need to do to make it to the big leagues But not the way it is trying to get them to understand that hitting is a fulltime job and that it takes a lot of hours of But Radison did have some words of praise for bat a pitcher can take a strong hack at a fastball probably better than most If you take those two big hits away a whole different ballgame That was some kind of Overshadowed by performance were three big home runs by Pulaski Two of them one each by Greg Cloninger and loser Brian Murphy cleared the 320-foot right-field hedge by over 20 feet And catcher Lee Long stroked one to center Appy Elizabethton Twins ended an eight-game losing streak as the Twins defeated the Wytheville Cubs 4-0 in an Appy League game By STEVE TAYLOR Times-News Sports Writer JOHNSON CITY Anything can happen in the Appalachian League And it did here Monday night Where else but the Appy League can you see the winning pitcher knock in five runs with two hard-hit doubles the winning team get seven extra-base hits without a home run and the losing team rip three homers (one by the losing pitcher) but blow a 2-0 lead? Although the Fourth of July was already history the Johnson City Cardinals put on a fireworks display with their bats in front of 2450 fans and scalped the Pulaski Braves 12-5 The Cards banging out 14 hits overcame a 2-0 deficit in the second inning with three runs and added eight more in the fifth to win their 11th game of the season against four losses Cardinal pitcher Dean Weese was the man of the hour The 6-1 185-lb right-hander worked 6 innings to even his record at 1-1 but the biggest K-Mets fall again 7-1 Continued from page 9B throwing error in the top of the first that led to a 3-0 deficit Kingsport was down 1-0 in the first with runners on first and third when Donnels grabbed a double-play bouncer to his left His relay throw to second base-man Rodolfo Hernandez went into right field and a run scored screwed up on defense and that opened the game up for Donnels said double play should have been turned over and we should have been out of the Later Neel made Corbin pay for a lack of control The 6-3 Neel hammered a fastball from Corbin over the left field fence to lead off the fifth a pitcher gets behind in the count like he was I look for said Neel who also had a double and a single and four RBI was struggling with his control so I knew he had to throw There was some redeeming quality to this loss as John Jphnstonejield up the reputation with a shutout over" the last three innings Sammye Sanchez kept things from getting worse with a sliding catch with the bases loaded and two out in the second And there was Tim Hines the Mets No 2 catcher who pitched batting practice in the afternoon and expect to play behind starter Steve Pis-kor But when Floyd yanked Piskor from the game in the third for a reason that went unexplained Hines delivered three hits in four at bats took me a little time to get my stroke said Hines who was hitless in his five at bats this season finally came afbund This is what I was waiting Vikings sign DJ Dozier EDEN PRAIRIE Minn The Buckwalter vice president for basketball operations Burlington sports top Appy show playing said the Lee May on a recent trip to Burlington a lot of intensity and big they move out of Burlington they better find a city that is as good or said Ned Bane the President of the Pulaski Braves make sense to move out of Burlington and into another place not as good the best franchise in the league tell you this If Burlington is not in the league next year and they try and play with seven teams I guarantee you we play with seven teams have to play with six because we be What about travel? Actually no other minor league is closer together than the Appalachian League There is a 220-mile difference between Kingsport and Burlington but in the Pioneer League there are 800 miles between several cities Also trip to Johnson City is approximately the same distance as trip to Burlington 1 Housing? Bristol and Kingsport had trouble finding housing for its players this season no shortage in Burlington defy any one to give me a good reason why Burlington be in the Appalachian saU Continued from page 9B would not provide support went in there and there any housing said is no way going to put a team in Faced with having a season with seven clubs which creates scheduling difficulties the Indians were allowed to put their club in Burlington for 1986 and 1987 There were conditions imposed on the franchise because of the travel for the UET teams The Burlington franchise pays its own bus travel the league pays transportation for the other seven travel "and' Burlington" the first night of hotel in Burlington for visiting teams still too expensive for them to be in the league" said Dottie Elsea part of the local group which runs the Mets did a study comparing Marion being in the league and Burlington being in the league and the difference was like said Halstead Wolff disputes claims it costs more to have Burlington in the league probably paying $15000 more than anybody else to be In the league" he said pay our own bus and that runs about $7000 We pay 20 nights of hotel for visiting teams and $400 a night understand how Bur lington is costing the league They keep thinking about moving into smaller cities like Blacksburg or Princeton (WVa) or Marion Blacksburg and Princeton even have suitable ballparks and Marion house The idea is to get an eighth franchise back into the league core the 1-81 corridor The Cubs were forced out of Paintsville Ky for that reason and also because of a lack of attendance think the Cubs are pushing this exclusion) because they were forced out of Paintsville said Wolff au a li vciyiiou Jsalu 11 iuu mi a drive to Kentucky Now the league looks bad because there is a team farther away in Burlington If you polled the farm directors seven of eight would say they mind having Bur-1 lington in the Each local operator in the Appy League kicks in $12000 a season in dues Last year there was a deficit of approximately $5200 Each parent club made up uie difference 1650 each est) according to minor league director Dave Miller Miller really see any problem with having Burlington in the league I think they do a great So do thiiplayers and coaches from visitiftg teams like.
