Tile I todies Kecorered and TsKa to the) 81 ore or, Where Klany Ptbetio Scenes Are I naeted In the Identification. Cleveland, July 17. Several lives were lost in an accident which occurred about 7:30 o'clock yesterday evening on the old river bed near the ore docks of the Cleveland Pittsburgh Railroad Co. The ore handlers had just quit work for the day and were waiting their turns to cross the branch of the river on thfe flat-bottomed ferryboat, which they had provided for this purpose. A number of the men had crossed.

When the ferry reached the dock the last time, atleast io men crowded upon it The boat, which is about 30 feet long and not more than four feet wide, would carry safely not more than a dozen persons. The boat was pushed from the shore and was being propelled across the stream. When it was about half way over it began to sink. Then, as the men rushed to the side, it turned over. All the occupants were thrown into the water.

Those who remained on the shore, alarmed- at the capsizing of the. little craft, at once threw life preservers and planks -to the unfortunate men, but most of them sank like lead. A few, however, managed to swim ashore, while one or two were picked up by a tug. The first report of the accident placed the number of dead at 23, but that proved to have been an exaggeration. The life-saving crew, whose station is near the scene of the accident, was summoned at once, and the work of recovering the bodies was begun.

Within half an hour seven corpses had been laid side by side the dock, but the life-savers continued their work and three more dead bodies were recovered. After the ten bodies had been recovered they were taken to the morgue. None of the men who were drowned lived near the place where the accident occurred and, although a great crowd of curiosity seekers had assembled, no one who saw the bodies as they were taken from the river was able to identify any of them. There were many pathetic scenes about the morgue while relatives of the dead men were identifying them. It was believed at 11 o'clock all the bodies had been recovered, though it is possible one or two more victims way be added to the list.

HE TALKS 05 TEE MET PLA5K. After His Speech ft Reception Is Held A Telegram from ez-Gov. Lewellinc Pledging Mr.

I ryan the Kan-' Ms Delegation. Kassas Citt. July 17. The Bryan train pulled into the Union de pot at 6:30 last even icier. A squad of a dozen policemen lined up along-side his car as it stopped, and Mr.

Bryan and his family, who quickly alighted, were escorted by them and the recep- tion committee to carriages in waiting on Uuion avenue and the start made for the Coates house. All along the route to the Coates, the crowds followed the procession in wajrons, buggies, carriages, on bicycles and on foot, cheerine, howling- and yelling with glee. At the Coates- another immense throng greeted the party's arrival. The Bryan party was escorted to the Cleve land parlors, on the 6econd floor, and there left to enjoy a brief but much-needed rest. At eisrht o'clock Mr.

and Mrs. Bryan were tendered a dinner in the banquet rooms on the parlor floor. The affair was wholly an informal one, and no toasts or speeches were given or made. It was just nine o'clock when Mr. Bryan, escorted bv Chief Irwin and II.

is. Julian, emerged from tbe hotel and walked to the front of the balcony and made a speech to the as sembled crowd. He said in part: Mr. Chairman. Ladies and Gentlemen: I stated to the committee th It I would not make a political speech, but in the presence of so many interested people am afraid I will be compelled to break my promise for just a few moments.

We are entering upon a memorable campaign. The platforms have been adopted. Two great parties have placed their candidates in the neld. and in a Utile while you, as citizens, will be called upon to discuss the issues involved. The platform adopted at Chicago is, in my hum le judgment, one ot the most splen did presentations of public policies ever adopted by a national oonvention in th United States.

It is not the platform of a section. It is the platform of our common country and appeals to thoe who love mankind to arise in its defense. It presents those fundamental truths upon which all true governments must rest. You wilt find in it as its key note that "all men are created equal" and that the object of government is to secure to the individual his inalienable rights and protect each man, from the humblest to the great, in the enjoyment of life and liberty and happiness. We have reached a crisis in our monetary legislation.

There are those who would chain this' nation to the gold standard, but while there be those who would fasten an European yoke upon the necks of American freemen, there is but one question, and that is, can this nation govern itself and make its own laws for its own people? I believe to the very bottom of my heart: I believe, and the belief touches every fiber of my being, that until we restore silver to its equal place by the side of gold, to the place it occupied for so many years, so many centuries and so many ages, there can be no lasting prosperity brought back to the homes of those who toil. I am not treading In new paths, nor tres passing upon dangerous grounds when I tell you that a dollar that rises in value is a dangerous dollar, a dollar which reaps where it does not sow, which gives to its possessor an unearned increment, which is taken out of the sweat and blood of those who toil, and if a man who owns a dollar desires that sort of a dollar, he forgets the equities of the case. There is no reason why the producers of wealth should bow down and worship a dollar destroy ing them and their chances for existence. But I am not going to discuss this question. I want to appeal to you to study it for yourselves and to enable yoji to study it intelligently and for that purpose, I want to supgest two things tor you to think about.

They tell us that tbe gold standard is the standard of It the gold standard is the stand ard of civilization, why is it that the United States, the leader in the civilization of the world, has never declared for the gold standard? The republican party declared that the gold standard should be maintained until something could be substituted for it Then what was that something? It was bimetallism. And they pledged themselves to get rid of the gold standard and substitute bimetallism as a better thing than a gold standard If the gold standard is a good thing why should we try to get rid of it? If it is a bad thing, why should we keep it for a single moment? If they had declared for a gold standard they might have advocated it, but having de clared against a gold standard they dare not ask the verdict of their countrymen on this proposition. Is the United States able to legislate for itself on the most important issues before the country, or must the legislative power be delegated to some foreign nation? Must the American people surren ler the right of self-government Let your ballots, let the ballots of each man, register a freeman's will, and, then, my friends, whatever may be the result, we shall accept it in that spirit which pervades democracy: we shall accept it because tbe majority of the people, ex pressing themselves at the polls, must be respected, because from their decision there is no appeal. After Mr. Bryan's speech there was a reception and when it was over Mr.

Bryan was handed a telegram from ex-Gov. Lewelling-, of Kansas, pledging-him the indorsement of the Kansas delegation. Bueklln's Araloa.
