Tuns In WNOX THE KNOXVILLE NEWS-SENTINED Wednesday May -20-1942 Want Ada SSI St Page 19 STROLLING SHEEP INFORMATION CASE RECORDS AUDIENCE APPEAL By George Crano by Bert Vincent JONES of Concord reckons some folks are ness to the 12-12 inch top of the a wire hoop His is made from a coat hanger The hoop is inside the cap Another Nelse Turner Item TJERE last Saturday was an item telling about II Nelse Turner of Howards Quarters kill An audience is not just 8 vague blur of facet to an experienced speaker Rather it it a composite of many individuals whose experiences are familiar to him Notice how Hal Totten's examples illustrate the gradual build-up of this attitude toward readers as well as auditors A good speaker therefore seldom uses sarcasm for he knows that what might please one segment of his audience may offend another Diplomacy develops with such experiences as these cited by Hal Totten curable disease Even 8-year-olds have penned requests for counsel in winning friends or earning spending money While I employ humor when I address you on the public platform I seldom attempt to be facetious in this column Each day millions of people eagerly scan these paragraphs to see if the case described ia not sufficiently similar to their own problem to give them some comfort or counsel I visualize these millions as I sit at my typewriter Hal Totten has beautifully illustrated the method by which professional performers build up a sixth sense by which they the mood of their audience educated and yet don't know everything For instance the railroad corralled a bunch of sheep at place the other day after they had escaped from a wrecked train near there and a TVA official was going through that section settling land claims and this TVA man asked Ben: "What kind of sheep were they?" replied Ben some were ewes and some buck sheep" sheep" exclaimed the TVA man a fine breed of sheep aren't they? Note: In case you don't know any more about sheep than the TVA man a ewe is a female sheep and a buck is a male or ram 8 from a doctor He was the old man's son He said they had found his father dead in front of the radio with this unfinished letter before him and his head bowed over it you get such glimpses of your radio audience you ultimately form a mental picture of the various types of people and adapt yourself I can doubly appreciate Hal remarks for I have undergone similar experiences literally by the hundreds of thousands People who have lost their loved ones cry out in tyieir letters for guidance and succor as do those with impending divorces Shy wallflowers want to learn how to become charming conversationalists Old people past 65 want health advice College graduates wish to learn how they should go about the task of seeking a job and request information on writing a letter of application Men in prison also write as do those who are dying of in have had so many letters from various people that 1 can see them in my imagination me give you an actual case As I was about to start my broadcast of a double header I looked out of my booth and saw a man and a boy sit down In front of me a rule the ushers try to keep people out of those seats in front of my booth But these folks sat quietly so they didn't obstruct my view of the field the first game was over they came up to me and introduced themselves The man -was blind He informed me that he and his son had listened to so many of my broadcasts that they had decided to visit the ball park and try to ifieet me the aecond game I think I gave probably my best broadcast for I was talking right a( the blind man in front of my microphone Every play that I described was directed toward his ears for a second example I received a letter from an old man out in Iowa It was written ing a copperhead snake with his butcher knife and now comes Jake Turner of Corbin Ky telling about Nelse and hii wheelbarrow Says Nelse worked one time for the late Turner ex-mayor of Middlesboro aa a carpenter and when the job waa finished Mr Turner gave Nelse a wheelbarrow Nelse took it to the express office in Middlesboro to have it shipped home The charges were 65 cents too much money" said Nelse "I can roll it home for less than So says Jake Turner of Corbin Nelse Turner pushed that wheelbarrow the 40 miles from Middlesboro to Howards Quarters But he saved 65 cents CASE V-192 TOTTEN aged about 40 was on the program with me before the Chicago Dental We were at dinner preliminary to our addresses when the president of the society asked Mr Totten if it difficult for him to imagine the radio audience listening to his sports broadcasts "It difficult anymore" Mr Totten explained I clearly but showed the wavering pen of an aged person In the middle of the letter the pen apparently had slipped and 'trailed across the page old man had started to tell me how much he had enjoyed my sports broadcasts the last ten years He was past 00 and had been confined to the house pretty closely for the previous decade "A second note accompanied this unfinished letter It was It' a Knoxville Beam VICTORY Carden Note: Jake Dunn and CHARLES LUCEY Rrrtppe-Hawerd Mill Writer WASHINGTON May 20 The Senate Defense Investigating Committee concerned at the heavy toll of shipping being taken by German submarines is preparing to call high naval officials in an inquiry into the adequacy of steps being taken to meet this growing enemy threat A subcommittee held hearings on the shipping situation in New York last week and will go into it further in hearings in New York and Portland Me next week Senator Mead (D N- Y) committee member said much evidence on the seriousness of the problem already had been received by the committee' Secretary of Navy Knox Is among those to be called 1 At a press conference last month Secretary Knox pointed out that the German submarine campaign has been coming in waves which rise and subside and that additional measures had been taken to meet the undersea attack threat alone Atlantic Secretary did not attribute reduced sinkings at the time to this increased protection but pointed out that there had been a drop in ship sinkings since such measures were adopted Sena ton Mead urged today that the Government seek a solution to the submarine menace by build-ing small sub-chasers well under to discover national figures who have captured the imagination of the public War has a way of pushing to the top almost overnight new leaders who but for the stress of national emergency might have continued their work in relative obscurity Two new figures which the present war haa pushed to the forefront are General Douglas Mac-Arthur and Donald Nelson The fact that these two have grown in popular stature since Pearl Harbor is not news but it is rthy fact revealed for first time in a survey by the Institute that both of them are today ranked among the top five by the public as presidential material for 1944 FDR la on List Although General MacArthur has no interest in elective office according to his friends and although his military duties would probably preclude his running for office the American public pays him the tribute of placing him at the top of a list of 18 presidential choices excluding Mr Roosevelt The 18 comprise virtually all leaders who have been prominently mentioned in recent years as presidential timber Next to MacArthur In popular favor as a presidential candidate comes Wendell Willkie the GOP candidate in 1940 and following him Thomas E- Dewey The next two ranking about equally so far as public favor is concerned are Henry A- Wallace and Donald Nelson The relatively high ranking given to Nelson a newcomer to the political scene is further proof that the public thinks the job he has undertaken as the czar of war production is being well done Teachers Have Bay Political observers well know of course that a man's popularity does not necessarily pave the way for his nomination The choice Of candidate in convention is determined to a great extent by what party leaders call his availability Events between Malum n0W nd eleC" Donald Nelson tion may make many present day leaders and by the same token make a whole new group There may for example be a recurrence of the 1940 situation when in the space of a few months a relatively unknown candidate Willkie came up to the front rank as the candidate most favored by the rank and file of Republicans Institute studies of that year showed that while Willkie was the choice of only 3 per cent of the GOP voters in early May he was polling 44 per cent and leading all other candidates in popularity aa the actual nominating convention opened in late June the typewriter?"
