THE REGISTER-NEWS MT. VERNON, ILLINOIS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1963 Batting Champ Tries To Repeat Davis'Clutch Hit Wins For LA. In 10th By MIKE RATHBT Asoctntcd Press Sports Writer Tommy Davis, trying to become the Hirst National League balling champion in a decade to retain his title, lost ground to Dick Groat in his latest effort but kept the Los Angeles Dodgers wheeling toward their long-awaited pennant popoff. Davis collected only one hit Tuesday night, but it was clutch single in the 10th inning that drove in the winning run in a 4-3 victory over Houston and main-: tained the Dodgers' six-game i bulge over second-place St. Louis.

Davis, a 24-year-old er swinger, trudged off the field last October with a .346 average and the batting title, after the Dodgers lost the third and deciding game of the pennant playoff with San Francisco. Now the Dodgers are heading for the champagne popoff they missed last year and Davis is struggling to become the first repeat batting champion since Stan Musial of St. Louis in 1950-51-52. Davis, hitting .32, is tied with Vada Pinson of Gncinnati for second place. Groat, baiting king at Pittsburgh with a .325 mark in 1960, is hitting .327 this year while playing shortstop for St.

Louis. He went 2-for-4 as the Cardinals ran their longest winning streak of the season to six games by walloping Pittsburgh 10-5. Juan Marichal joined the 20-vic tory club as third-place San Francisco blasted the Chicago Cubs 16-3, Philadelphia's Ray Culp shut out Milwaukee 2-0 on two hits and Cincinnati's Joe Nuxhall blanked the New York Mets 5-0 on three hits. The Colts scored in the top of the 10th on Rusty Staub's run- producing single before pinch hitter Moose Skowron got the Dodgers started with a single in the bottom half. A single by Jim Gilliam and Wally Moon's sacrifice fly got tlie tying run across.

Gilliam then stole second, Davis singled and reliever Ron Perranoski, 14-2, had another victory. Dick Farrell, 10-13, took the loss. Trailing 5-4 going into the sixth, the Cardinals tied the score on an error by reliever Roy Face, and moved out front to stay on a passed ball by Jim Pagliaroni before Tim McCarver's three-run eighth-inning homer clinched it. Bill White also homered for St. Louis, hitting a career high with his 23rd.

Cardinals Try For Seventh Straight Win ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Cardinals will try to extend a six-game winning streak tonight' when they face the last-place New York Mets. The Redbirds used 10 walks, three errors, a passed ball, an interference call, a mental mistake and two home runs to batter the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-5 Tuesday for a sweep of their three-game series. The victory kept the Cardinals 6 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who edged the Houston Colts 4-3 in 10 innings.

Manager Johnny Keane of the Cardinals said the sloppily-played contest seven errors were committed was probably dur to muggy weather and the effects of the Labor Day doubleheader. The Cardinals led 4-1 when the Pirates scored four unearned runs in the top of the sixth for a 5-4 lead. But the Redbirds came back with three in their half of the inning and iced the game with three in the eighth. Relief pitcher Bobby Shantz (6-3) gained credit for the victory. Elroy Face (3-8) was the loser, also in relief.

Shantz followed starter Ray Sadecki and Sam Jones to the mound. Face got himself in trouble in the sixth when a run scored while he was hobbling a batted ball. Another run scored on a passed ball and Bill White doubled in the third tally. Tim McCarver's three-run home run in the eighth assured the Cardinals of the longest winning skein of the season. White belted his 23rd home run a career high in the fifth.

"I'd say we're ready and if we stay healthy we'll be okay," Lombardi said Tuesday while discussing Monday night's 24 -17 exhibition victory over the New York Giants, the team the Packers defeated in the last two title showdowns. "That was as good a football 1 game as you'll see in the league season," said Lombardi. "The Giants are still one of the real great defensive clubs," said Lombardi, "and we moved against them." The Packers rolled up 286 yards running and passing to 182 for the Giants. It was the seventh straight Packer victory over the New York club. The Packers have won four straight exhibitions since they were upset 20-17 by the College All-Stars in their initial start, Green Bay makes its last tion start against the Washington Redskins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Saturday night and will begin the regular season entertaining the Chicago Bears Sept.

15. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Three weeks of rough-and-tumble baseball comes down to the wire tonight when Ponchatoula, La. and the Wichita Dreamliners battle for the championship of the National Baseball Congress. The Dreamliners are the defending champions.

Thirty-two teams from throughout the country started the double-elimination playoff on Aug. 16. The Louisiana champions gained the finals with a 2-1 victory over Fairbanks, Alaska, Tuesday night, scoring both runs in the second inning with a single and a squeeze bunt.

Such as Steve Barber becoming the top winning pitcher in the Baltimore Orioles' modern history.

And Dick Stuart of the Boston Red Sox becoming the first very all the years of baseball's recorded annals ever to bat in 100 runs in a season in both major leagues. These significant events took place Tuesday as Barber and Baltimore trimmed Stuart and Boston 4-3. Barber, with relief help, gained his 19lh most ever by an Oriole pitcher since Baltimore came back into the league in 1954 Stuart tagged his 36th homer off Stu Miller, with a man on in the eighth inning, giving him an even 100 RBI. The first baseman, who went to the Red Sox in an inter- league trade during the winter, knocked in 117 for Pittsburgh in 1961. The Detroit Tigers outlasted the front-running New York Yankees, winning 3-2 on rookie George Smith's run-scoring single in the 15th inning, and Ed Charles' sacrifice fly in the eighth inning sent in the run that gave Kansas City a 3-2 decision over Minnesota in the only other AL games played.

Baltimore touched loser Dave Morehead for two unearned runs in the first inning, made it 3-0 in the fourth, and got the clincher in the seventh on Luis Aparicio's dazzling base running. Aparicio beat out an infield single, stole second and him 3 steals and loped in on Boog Powell's double. Barber, 19-10, gave way to Mil ler after a leadoff walk to Felix Mantilla in the eighth, ad Stuart belted his homer against the slow balling reliever two outs later Pat halfback Rick Sygar suffered a broken leg in practice and will be lost to the Wolverines for the season.
