GARLAND, Texas (AP) The apparent slaying of 8-year- old Kim Nguyen has stirred the emotions of Garland residents, hundreds of whom volunteered their time to search for the missing autistic boy. "Whoever did it, they have messed with the wrong city, and they will pay for the crime," Garland Mayor Bob Smith said. "It hurts to know that it turned cut like this," said Eric Pierce, a volunteer who wore a T-shirt with Kim's picture on it. More than 350 similar shirts were made with funds from an unidentified donor.

Police believe a nude, partially decomposed body that was found in a field east of Dallas is Kim. They announced Friday that they consider the case to be a homicide, although the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office hadn't made a positive identification as of Friday. Kim is believed to have walked away from his family's Garland home about 7 a.m. July 18 wearing only a blue and brown plaid shirt. The shirt later was found about a mile from his home.

"We do not have a cause of death yet, but we are operating on the assumption that it's a homicide," Garland Police Chief Terry Hensley said. "It's unrealistic to believe that a nude boy would walk 12 miles to that field and collapse. He had to get there some way." Hensley said police have no suspects and no motives. But they're asking "There's someone out there that has noticed that there is a person they know acting strangely since Kim disappeared," said Hensley. "People don't do this kind of thing without people knowing it." Residents already have shown that they're eager to help.

Kim's disappearance prompted a weeklong search led by police and hundreds of volunteers, who scoured creeks, woods and sewer tunnels. After police wound down the search and concluded that he was not within the two-mile search radius, volunteers continued to mail and post fliers throughout Garland and nearby cities. Rudolph Nguyen, who had searched for his son daily until the early morning hours, said he was. angry but not vengeful toward his son's attacker. "I had hoped that because he was a handicapped boy that they wouldn't kill him," he said.

The 17-month-old enterprise, Motorola Nortel Communications won't be completely dissolved, even though its operations the marketing, sales and service of equipment for wireless networks are being dismantled. The only structure that will be left is a two-man board of directors that will include Marty Singer, Motorola's vice president for business development and Northern Telecom group vice peresident David Twy ver. The board will monitor the development of products at each company to help ensure that they work together in the same wireless systems. "We got consistent feedback from our customers that they found it awkward" to negotiate with the joint venture, instead of directly with the separate parent companies, Singer said Friday. Most of the 1,000 workers involved in the joint venture will return to work Monday for their parent company.

Both Motorola and Northern Telecom denied that the joint, venture was not a financial sucV cess, although neither side disclosed the dollar amount of deals, signed during its relatively short life.
