Wayne Levi, winner of the Hawaiian Open earlier this year, had the biggest charge of the day by scoring nine birdies, but his hopes of a title fell snort when he took a quadruple bogey eight on the 15th All of the contenders stumbled on the 15th, a par 4, 448-yard bole considered the toughest on the course. Fergus bogeyed the bole and then parred the rest of the way and Floyd took a double bogey, but fought back to make the playoffs with consecutive birdies at os 16 and 17. MIAMI (AP) Alabama head football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant is the higher wage-earner in collegiate sports, getting a base salary and benefits 8 totaling HSO.ooo yearly, a newspaper reported in its Sunday editions. Bryant earns an estimated $104,000 base salary, and receives some $300,000 in television and radio benefits, according to a survey of the nation's collegiate coaches by the Miami Herald.

Bryant is by far the top man on the wage scale, with Oklahoma's Barry Switzer second at $270,000 yearly. Jackie Sherrill, new head coach at Texas AfcM, is third after signing a six-year contract this winter for $240,000 annually. Lou Holti of Arkansas is listed fourth at $226,000, followed by Kentucky's Jerry Claiborne at $152,500. Bryant, the winning est coach in the college ranks, also does commercials 8 for a home builder, kerosene heaters and South Central Bell on a regional 8 level. His endorsement of Ford pickups goes nationwide, and he is expected to receive an undisclosed amount from the sales of 315 customized vans decorated with a bear's footprint on the back tire that sells for $19,000, the Herald reported.

The victory, the first this season for Fergus, was worth $54,000. Floyd, win-less this season, took second place money of $32,400. The tournament was stopped because of inclement weather for the fourth day in a row, this time halting play for 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Nelson and Fergus were tied at 16-under-par at the time of the delay, waiting to putt on the 14th green. The long delay apparently made the 15th more of a monster than it normally is. A mountain of rock lines the right side of the fairway and a ditch that always contains running water also causes problems. Fergus, who started play three shots behind Nelson, the 1981 PGA champion, fell further back with a bogey on No. 11, but came fighting back with birdies at 4, 6, 9 and 11 before moving into a tie with Nelson with a birdie at No.l211nelson had birdied the 11th.

Floyd knocked in birdies putts at No.7 and 9 and collected four more on the back side to counter the double bogey at 15. He chipped in for one his birdie on No 17.
