missed out on five other scoring opportunities when their attack bogged deep in Miami territory Carper Gets Credit Tony Carper gets the major portion' of the credit for the triumph Going in for Johnny Muhin urn Iliiii IS It Scoreless ties are usually drab and listless but not this one It was different very different with first one team threatening to score and then the other cutting loose with dazsllng passes and spine-tingling runs that kept the spectators In a state of Jitters until the final gun Fumbles Intercepted passes vicious defensive stands and time prevented the fighting elevens from scoring Even though Tennessee was held to a tie In the final game ef the season Phantom Fhil Dickens elosed out his brilliant career as a Volunteer In a blaxe of glory Ho was as great In the dogfall as he has been in Tennessee's outstanding victories Those other Tennessee seniors Dougherty Captain Weaver and Jim Porter did themselves proud in their last game under Major Bob Neyland Dickens And Wood Lead Time after time Dickens and Babe Wood the sophomore who Is expected to step Into the Phantom's shoes next season led de-termed charges down the field apparently touchdown bound only to see them thwarted hy some unexpected break Ole Miss ripped the Tennessee line to shreds on numerous occasions as the Hapes brothers Ray and Clarence and Dsvcl Bernard tore through for neat gains but unfortunate' mlscuea prevented them from breaking the Tennessee jinx of 14 years standing An Ole Miss team has never defeated a Tennessee eleven They came close in 1935 when they were nosed out 14-13 and they came closer today when time stopped their last minute drive only 10 yards from goal line Tennessee had six scoring opportunities while Ole Miss had four fine chancea to cross the Volunteer's goal line Time played a prank on the Vols Just as It did on the Rebels Near the dose of the half the Vola took possession of the ball on their own 44 yard line and with Duncan running and Dickens passing to Bowden Wyatt the Orange eleven made a first down on the Ole Miss' 16-yard line Just as the half ended Scouts Did Good Work Not only did Ole Miss offer one of the most devastating running attacks that Tennessee has encountered this season but they presented one of the finest defensive elevens The Rebel scouts really did themselves proud It seemed that the Ole Miss secondary knew as much about Tennessee passes as the Vols did themselves Ray Hapes was in there all afternoon either hawking Yol passes or batting them down and Bernard and Hutson also did a neat job of solving the Orange aerial game Dougherty and Porter both gave a magnificent exhibition of defensive play The big full baek was everywhere behind the Tennessee line making tackles all afternoon and Porter never made as many tackles In a single game In his Ufa as he did against the Rebels The slender end made the outstanding defensive play of the gtme In tho fourth period Ole Miss had punctured the Tennessee defense and marched to the 31-yard line They larked Inches of a first down on their fourth down Bernard a powerful plunger drove Into the line like a locomotive but Torter shot In from hla end post and smacked the ball carrier down for a yard loss It was a brilliant Individual piece of work on Porter's part Rebels Threaten The Rebels nude their first serious threat to score 1st in the opening period Ray Hapes who was a whin st returning punts wsllxed down the field with one of Dickens' kicks for 13 yards to Tennessee's 43-yard strips This was their first Invasion of Tennessee territory on the offense The Hapes boys assisted by Bernard then started a most vicious assault that netted a couple of first downs as they paraded to Tennessee's 17-yeard line Bernard then flipped a pass but Joe Little snagged it for Tennessee on his own 10-yard linn and ran Ilka a scared rabbit down the field for 34 yards before he was brought down on his own 43-ynrd linn by the lone man between him and a tourhdown The Vole opened with a riaxxllnc orfense Dickons passed lo Porter for a gain of 34 yards and a first down on the Oln Mis 30-yard line as the first period ended Major Neyland pent
