SCOTS 33-0 r- jamecocks Stave Off Two Attacks On One-Yard Line In Action And Other Scenes From The Tennessee Maryville'Game Allen Is Brilliant In Opener Team Play Disappoints Maryville Presents Scrappy Eleven With Captain Callaway as Star Wallace Team Tries 21 Passes Completes But Two 10000 See Game Ily I toil WILSON With Gene (Wild Bull) McEver the terror of Dixie Gridirons In 11929 showing Hashes and dashes nr his old-time brilliancy the Uni-'verslty of Tenneesee Vola defeated the Maryville College Highlanders 33 to 0 in their opening game of i be season at Shlelds-Watklns Field yesterday But other than ithe return of the "Bool" in his 'snortin' and cavorting fashion and the individual performances of I Shark Allen Deke Brackett Harvey Robinson Charley Kohlhase and few others the play of the Vols was ragged and Indeed unimpressive Shack Allen the Ellsabethton fireman sounded the danger gong for other Vol opponents by his great running against the Highlanders He was like a streak against the visitors One time ho broke off tackle and shot thru tho Highlanders for S3 yards and a touchdown and again he tore thru the line and raced 23 yards for another touchdown Roth of his runs were spectacular as he shook off would be tackier He made numerous other dashes that thrilled ItrM'keU Next And next to Allen came Deke Brackett a sophomore and former Knoxville High star Brackett ran helter-skelter over the Highlanders for a number of good gains Beside hla ball-carrying Deke also ran the team well while he was holding down the quarterback Job While had luek apparently was trailing Charley Kohlhase nevertheless he played a dandy game of football They Mocked one of Ms punts 'tls true but It was no fault of KIs protectors failed to protect and Carper that stalwart Maryville tackle shot thru and blocked his kirk Then Kohlhase broke loose with one of the prettiest runs of the game He looked like a Hackman taking those long strides down the field but after he had gone about 40 yards he decided to move the ball from under one arm to the other and he dropped It But even these two bad breaks did not keep Charley from showing plenty of form as a bait carrier not to mention his defensive play and good kicking Why even after Maryville had Mocked hla punt he stood behind hla own goal line on the next play and punched the pigskin way off down the field out of danger And he pulled one of Ifohhy Dodd's old tricks too He kicked the ball out of bounds of Maryville's two-yard line another time llnMnson and Disney Harvey Robinson that slender pin from Caroline and Ty Disney the pride of Middlesboro alsn came thru In fine fashion Disney looked like the Disney of 1929 when he ran regularly at fullback His running was better than ever before Robinson displayed plenty of Improvement over last year He Hipped parses a la Dodd one of which was good for a touchdown and he kicked and ran with the hall In a pleasing manner There you have been told about the brilliant Individual work of the backs but there Is little to tell about the line except that it was a sad disappointment Touted to the skies as the most promising forward wall In several year It failed to check the rushes of tho Highlanders With the exception if Krlnk pft h( line that Major Neyland finally threw Into the fray outclassed tho first stringers Maryville Fought Of course fh era was some rea son for the line giving Coach I 8 Honaker the Gloomy Gua of the Smoky Mountain Confer cnee presented a scrappy well-balanced team led by a fighting leader In Captain Lea Callaway Honaker teams always fight until the last but I have never seen (I'lease Turn to Tage 5) SUMMARY Nw-Sentinel Phlocrarh There was real action in the Tennessee-Maryville game at Shlelds-Watklns Field Saturday
