Government officials today sounded high praise for labor's part in the war effort during 1944 and joined union officials in calling for still greater output of arms in 1945. Clinton S.

Golden and Joseph D. Keenan, War Production Board manpower officials said in a special report that man-days lost during the first 10 months of 1944 totalled 7,135,000 less than in the corresponding periods of both 1943 and 1941. "One of the most notable features of our war effort is the way in which free labor in the United States has been able to meet every demand upon it," they said. "We are confident it will produce the stepped-up requirements for war materials and equipment that we must have in order to win a decisive victory." War Manpower Chief Paul V. Mc-1 Nutt expressed confidence that free a Ameriean could outproduce "both the Mikado's fanatic-manned factories and Hitler's factories manned by German robot-workers." Organized labor's pledges for renewed effort came from Presidents Philip Murray of the Congress of Industrial Organizations and William Green of the American Federation of Labor.

Green said labor's determination to produce should be a new warning the enemy. Murray promised that the CIO would adhere to its no-strike pledge until both Germany and Japan are defeated. Holiday Record By United Press NEW YORK, Jan. 135 accidental deaths marred the Nation's New Year's celebration, United Press survey indicated early today, with a collision between two sections of the Southern Pacific's crack west-bound Limited near Ogden, Utah, claiming at least 50 lives. Traffic accidents, exclusive of the Utah rail disaster, accounted for 35 deaths in the first two days of the long holiday week-end.

Reports of automobile accidents along slippery highways during the night, however, increased the toll hourly. The traffic toll, to date, was below the National Safety Council's 350 estimate for the week-end. Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania each listed 11 holiday deaths, ten of then in traffic accidents. By GAYNOR MADDOX NEA Staff Writer Fish is good eating. Right now supplies of both fresh and salt water fish are plentiful. In fact, unless Americans learn to use more fish in their daily menus, there is danger that a huge amount of this valuable non-rationed and delicious protein may go to waste, The War Food Administration, realizing that supplies are dangerously high, is urging greater use of fish. John L.
