BOONE NZ Appalachian State underscored the weaknesses of East Tennessee State's football team here last night Throwing deep and often quarterback Steve Brown riddled the ETSU defensive secondary which had been ranked fith in the nation in passing yards allowed last week for 408 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Mountaineers to a 42-15 victory An article in a recent issue of Inside Sports hailed Appalachian State as one of the 10 most exciting college football teams to watch in Division I something the Buccaneers were made readily aware of last night Brown established a Southern Conference record for passing yards (408) as he completed 26 of 38 attempts for three touch- downs "He played very well" understated first-year Appy head coach Mike Working "He thought he didn't play that well last week (in a 14-7 loss to UT-Chattanooga) and he had something to prove" "East Tennessee wasn't all that bad a team defensively" said an all-too-kind Brown "They like to blitz a lot something we noticed on film and we were able to dump the ball off quite a bit" By DENNIS WAGNER Times-News Sports Writer BOONE NC Steve Brown couldn't have been happier His sleepless nights of worrying came to an end last night The Appalachian State senior turned nightmares into pleasant dreams with his Southern Conference record-setting performance against hapless East Tennessee State University The thoughts of a non-productive day against UT-Chattanooga last week vanished Brown ranked ninth in the nation in passing riddled the Buccaneer secondary for a league record 408 yards on 26 completions in 36 attempts His three touchdown passes sparked the Mounties to a 42- 15 romp past the Buccaneers "It was playing heavy on my mind" said the 5-11 Mountaineer quarterback "I didn't think I played that badly against UT-C but I wanted to come back and -have a better game this week "I would sit up at night and think about it I just knew I was going to have a good game The linemen told me before the game I was going to have a good one and they came through for me "No" Brown laughed "I didn't know it was going to be this good" Brown a 185-pounder connected for three touchdown passes and made a shambles of ETSU's defense unbelievably ranked sixth in the nation in pass defense Brown's favorite target of course was senior split end Rick Beasley who latched on to 9 aerials for 220 yards including a 63-yard touchdown bomb "We've been playing together for three years now" said the personable Beasley "I think I know by now what he's going to do and I think he knows what I'm going to do When he gets in trouble I try to help him out and he looks for me" Records never entered Brown's mind during the contest "I didn't know it" said Brown "I just knew 1 threw for over 400 1 heard them announce it over the PA But I'll take the record It felt pretty good "We had a good game The line played super "East Tennessee always likes to blitz a lot and I was able to dump it off to the backs when I couldn't find Rick" Appalachian State head coach Mike Working was impressed with Brown's performance But even more Working was pleased with his signal-caller's work during the week "He's our captain' said Working in his first year at the Mountaineer helm "He did a good job with the leadership all week long" Brown hasn't had any problems adjusting to Working's system of a straight dropback quarterback Brown used to the wishbone attack is taking the new order in stride "It doesn't matter to me" said the good-natured Brown "Football is football I just go out to have a good time "But it sure does help when you win" Appy State took the second half kickoff 80 yards in eight plays to score a touchdown (on a three-yard run by Arnold Floyd) that Working labeled the turning point of the game "The game was really won when our team kept its poise to start the second half and went 80 yards to score" said Working Following that play the Bucs simply could not generate any offense 441 AdvanceAuto' ihhd6a -ill --itwfolommaimat p- 41 1 i 1 sE i 1 i 1T Pre-season sauinosi rim rart) "Our defenive unit really responded to the challenge" said Working "They banded together like a unit" Without Ferrell the Bucs had no breakaway runner rendering a sub-par passing attack all the weaker Meanwhile the Mountaineers Brown's primary target was split end Rick Beasley who grabbed nine passes for 220 yards Beagley who led the nation in receptions a year ago caught a 63-yard TD pass in the second quarter Appalachian State amassed Specials Good Thru Saturday There's An Advance
