Now under construction is the youth science building, which will house complete laboratories and research facilities and a collection oi marine biology specimens val-i ued at S250.000. according to Dr. Bruce W. Halstead, director of the institute.

The building will be the center of activity for the youth science program, to be organized by the nonprofit research and education al institution to direct the foot steps of young people desiring to pursue careers in science. Ten Year Program The building is the first step in I a vast program that calls fo: building period of ten years with a capital outlay of 515,000.000 for a research center to conduct sci entific inquiry into contributions to mankind that may be obtained from plant and animal life. Dr. Halstead, former chairman of the division of natural products of the School of Tropical and Pre ventive Medicine at the College of Evangelists at Loma Linda, has participated in exten she research in the field of marine biology, and most recently was an instructor in tropical medicine at the U. S.

Naval School at Bethesda, serving as lieutenant-commander. World Authority Dr. Halstead is regarded as one of the world's top authorities on poisonous fishes. He headed a field survey team that investigated fish poisoning in the Line, Midway and Johnston Islands in the South Pa cific. Such fish poisoning first was held Monday at 9:00 a.m.

Mentone Chamber Meets The regular May meeting of the Mentone Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to be held at the Mentone Elementary school all purpose room Wednesday evening. Park And Zoo When completed, the park will feature a museum of medical na tura! history, showing the role plants and animals in the health and welfare of mankind, and an aquarium of medical marine bio! ogy, featuring venomous stin rays, stinging fish, barracuda sharks and other marine organisms dangerous to man. Also featured will be a zoo with special emphasis on animals that can transmit diseases to man. and a conservatory of economic plant: that are vital to man as source? of food, drugs, and chemical com pounds. In addition, plans are in the works for a public science hal and auditorium, an aviary, and a planetarium, to be used in con nection with research on space biology and medicine.

But the major work of tiie in stitute will be research into diem ical agents that can be obtained from land nlants and marine organisms. These chemical agenis will be investigated for their an tibiotic, antitubercular, anticancer and antimycotic activity and as sources of drugs. Programs also will be developed for the purpose of screening these compounds for their value as organic chemical agents such as essential oils, waxes and other substances. About People Mr. and Mrs.

SUBSCRIPTION RATES tin One Month I I.W Three Mentha 3.60 Months 7.10, ne Year 11.110 An unexpectedly large number of Redlanders lined up to take advantage of the polio clinic at Cope Junior High school last night, making it necessary to turn away some 50-100 when the serum supply was exhausted Mrs. Hazel Lau, president of District No. 39 of the Nurses as sociation, which cooperated with the County Medical Society in sponsoring the clinic, reported today that 1543 polio shots were administered during the 5 to 8 p.m. period.

Those who had to be turned away last night were urged to attend a similar clinic in Yucaipa tomorrow night between 5 and 8 p.m. at the Yucaipa Legion hall on California street just a block south of Yucaipa boulevard. A second clinic is also scheduled for Redlands on June 1. again at Cope and for the same hours. This will be at the proper interval for those who had their first shots of the Salk vaccine last night, those who had shots a year, ago and need a booster or fori those who still need their first shot.

A fast-moving line back to the parking lot formed at Cope last night as soon as the clinic went into operation at 5 p.m. and, with (he exception of a lull between 6 and 7, continued throughout the entire evening, according to Mrs. L2u. She stated today that "fhis response was heartwarming for all of us who were involved." There were approximately 15 nurses assisting with the clinic which was under the supervision of Dr. James Gillespie, chief of; staff at Redlands Community hospital, and Dr.

John Miley as representatives of the County Medical Society. For those persons who received their first shots last night anri will have their second June 1, a third clinic is slated for approxi- Youth Nabbed While Stealing From Car Police Officer Jack Bray nabbed a youth in the act of burglarizing an automobile parked back of the Chamber of Commerce while its owner was attending a meeting there last night. While police were interrogating the suspect at the station a second victim, Douglas R. Turner, 1615 Washington in to report his car burglarized in the Cajon street parking lot. The suspect, identified as Richard Frank Gonzales, 18, 618 Sixth street, had in his possession some items taken from the Turner car.

Officer Bray said that the youth threw down what he was taking from the glove compartment and slammed the compartment shut when he was caught. Rodney Cranmer, the club's community service chairman, presented the resolution on which the club had voted favorably at yesterday's general meeting.
