It was not usual for the co-ineil to receive protects or enter into arguments on them. Mr. llhike said he would insist on having an cx-pianation.

We, however, proceeded onward with preat caution (caution too late) till we reached the fatal StraH'an.

Hereon the right-hand side of the road we beheld what shall 1 call it a wreck Why a shipwreck would alford no idea of it. It hardly deserves the title it is not sufficiently expressive because almost every board, belonging to the ill-fated carriages were broken into staves and splinters and strewed about the margin of the road. Here were the mangled bodies of a dozen human beings stretched (dead) alongside a wall with a small piece of tarpaulin over them from the windows of our carriages we saw their hands, their feet, and what seemed their features two policemen guarded them, till the coroner should have arrived, with fixed bayonets a piece of the chimney next caught my eye then I beheld the locomotive which did all the mischief, its front gone, its bolts and machinery, some of hich lay on the road, were exposed like the body of an animal in process of dissection. Alter it stood a luggage van, one second-class, and one first-class carriage in a pretty fair state of preservation, save and except the extreme end of the latter, which reminded me of a handsome-painted bouse whose gable-end bad, by lire or some other dreadful element, been torn away.
