Last week however, we were treated to a new development of the perscou-uan. A rather formidable-looking package loomed obtrusively among ths letters and papers which ws were accustomed to And en ths editorial desk.

It was not without soma trepidation thatwa out open the packaga, outside addressed on unpretending brown paper, but inside an elaborate design intimated that the missive came from Stephens and Co," Our readera will not blanie us if we hfwtsated in the attempt to solve the mysterythe name-was jnggestjve, and visions of Infernal machines, nitroglycerine. Fenian Are, and other diabolical engines flitted across our imagination, while wo held the neatly got up parcel in our flngeia. Thoughts of sailing in the police did occur, but we soon gotover this unworthy trepidation and tore open tha inside covering, when we found a quantity we will not say how much --of gunpowder Tea, truly gunpowder, odoriferous but pleasing vi? oi'ctorle- Our first impulse was to consign it to the fire, which we eventually did, with, however, the intervention of a well-known culinary utensil, and the result was a oup of real good tea i much pleasantcr to discuss, we can assure our readers, than any amount of pamphlets On the Condition of or 44 Ways to Deal with King Theodore," or 44 Mrs. Cottle's New Jerusalem." Competition in the Tea Trade. Durinx the past counts of so much so that consumers are bewildered from whom to purchase.

Where every merchant offers his wares as the best and cheapest, it is indeed very hard to decide between them but as a trial in every case is convincing, the difficulty we allude to is in a great measure removed. Messrs Stephens and Co, Parliament street, Dublin, have forwarded a paroel of their tea, which they advertise at 2s per and until we had seen and tested, we were rather dubious of Its quality. Tho well known character of the firm la a sufficient guarantee that the article In question will be sold at the price fixed upon it, which must Insure It a large sale, especially amongst the poor, who will pro tit by procuring it, (The Watorford News, January 17, 1888.) -Tea for the People. The Messrs Stephens and Ca wholesale tea dealers, Dublin, have forwarded us a sample of their tea, at two ahiliinga, in order that we might be able to pronounoe an opinion on its merits, after having tested its quality. Having done so, and obtained the verdict ofa venerable lady in our household, who has consumed many cups of the beverage in her life time, we ean now tell the public that we scarcely thought it possible that so exoellent an article could be sola at so low a figure.

The tea possesses an excellent flavour, and to produce a sufficiently strong extract, no greater quantity is required than is used of a high priced article. The large wholesale trade carried en by the Messrs Stephens, who make It a study to give a good article at a roaily small profit, is the only way in which we can account for the production of such good tea at so small a price. (The 4 Fermanagh Mail and Enniskillen January 1ft, 1868.) Tea. Those who desire eood tea should, therefore, seek it In eme establishment of character, which deals exclusivelv in that article, and imports it on tneir own account from tne best tea- growing districts. We have much pleasure, therefore, in directing special attention to the advertisements of Messrs rniuips and (Jo. of London, and Samuel Stephens and Co, of Dublin, two establishments whom we have tried, who we can safely say are determined to keep faith with the public, and whom we are sure the same publie will gladly favour with its custom. From the latter Arm, Indeed, we have been favoured with a sample of their People's Tea at 2s per lb, that is only three halfpence an ounce, and we pronounce it excellent at the prioe not like a concoction of liMrwood and broom chips, but of rood flavour and fit for drinking.

Their higher priced teas are, of ouursa, auperior in proportion, ana sannot xau to please tna most laatuuoua am-noisseur. (The Limerick Reporter and Tipperary Vindicator," January 24. 1868.) Stephens and Go's Tea (2 Parliament street, Dublin.) We have again express our very ravonraoie opinion oi tne excellent lens of Stephens and Co, 2 Parliament street, Dublin. Samples of the 2s per lb and the 3s per lb new Teas hare reached us, which fully sustain the high character which these Teaa have ao long enjoyed, and which recommend them ao strongly to the entire pumic (The 44 Tuam Herald." Febrnarr 8. 1868.

Tho People's Tea," We direct attention to an advertisement in our columns, from Messrs Stephens and Co, of 2 Parliament-street, Dublin, offering- for sale tea at 2s per lb. The flavour of this tea, a sample of which haa been forwarded tons, it is decidedly exoellent, and we heartily reoommend It to the people for whose special use it is announced, and to whom an article combining guoa quauty wiw cueapnoai is a oomaea doou. (The 44 Tuam Herald," February 20, 1888.) A Tea-total Paragraph That most favoured and delicious of refreshing beverages, tea, has never, of course, since its first introduction into England, been used to the same extent as it fa at present. When Mr tiladstono, hi a humane and mercigul moment, determined on reducing the tea duty, we verily believe he conferred a lasting boon on all elssaoa of his fellow creatures, the poor especially. At all times a good oup of Souchong or Orange Pekoe is acceptable, but there are occasions when it is a positive luxury, and arte as a stimulant and soother in momenta of great physical depression.

While, however, this necessary article of domestic enjoyment has latterly been pissed within the reach of the ptorest amongst ua, ws are sorry to be in for mod that adulteration is earned on to an extent that haa not hitherto existed in tha trade. Krom thia charge wa believe Dublin to bo specially exempt, and amongst the foremost merchants of that city who have ever laboured to koep down the price of tea, we have great pleasure in mentioning the eminent firm of Samuel Stephens and Co, of No 2 Parliament street and South Great Oeorge street. For 2s per lb, they give the best flavoured tea we have aver had ths pleasure of drinking. It Is made up In canisters of different sises to suit purchasers, and sent to all parte of the country and after having experienced the exoellent quality of the article to be had at their establishments, we eannot wonder at tha liberal patronage they receive in this country, and the flushing prosperity observahla in their business. If other houses would imitate the example of the Messrs Stephens, and retail to tha public a really good article at a price within tha reach of tha poorest, it would tend much to improve the trad of Ireland and better the condition of tho people.

January 84, 18J8.) Chowe Teas We last week took the opportunity to express our -pinion of the excellent quality of the tea otifered to the public Jlthelow prioe of 2s per lb by the extensive wholesale merchants. Kauri Samuel Stufthena and Ce, Parliatnent street, Dublin, and his week we are in a position to give our opinion as to the quality at their very fine black tea at 3s per pound. Having used a Minnie forwarded to us, can bear our testimony to -the fact, tt77 i what the importers declare it to bea tea that will give irery satisfaction to consumers of ohoioe flavour and excellent quality. (The Nenagh Guardian." February 13, 1868.) The Cup whioh Cheers, The tnpetua imparted to the Tea Trade by the fall in duty has possibly astouiahed even the Kx-ChanoeUor of the Exchequer himself, far doubtless in all his san-nune enthusiasm Mr Gladstone had no Idea that the increase In up consumption would compensate the loss to the revenue by the reduction. Thanks to the spirited rivalry of a few large impor-tu who carry on their trade on the "live and let live" prin-eiple, the tea drinking world are enabled to enjoy a share of the boon conferred by Parliament.

Of the few, we are proud to point to an eminent Irish houM, which has refused to be of the party of luonopolista which would draw the whole advantages into their own rapacious maw. Meters Samuel (Stephens and of 8 Par-liiment-ftrast, and 8T South Great Goorgo'e-street, have proved themselves the tea-drlnkera' friend, and it would be ungrateful if their efforts to keep down the prioe and keep up the quality of the universal cup did not meet that return which will enable them to sustain their warfare in the interests of millions. The quality of the per lb. canisters suggests grave doubts whether we have not all been the victims of extortion on the part of the princely owners of the China clippers, more particularly when their choice daHiiptions are, in the opinion of some tea connoisseurs, at least equal to the best overdrawn in silver teapot, and cheaper than infrrior sorts in toomauy famous tea houses. We have been favoured with samples, and feel bound to say that we think Mr.

Stephens's customers have grounds for their enthusiastic prefo-renoa Might not tea retailers serve themselves by turning their attention to this branch of their business, with the view of buying and selling on more advantageous terms for their own custo-xnen Monopoly has received many shocks and in the tea trade we hope the Messrs Stephana have dealt it the mortal stroke. (The Gal way Exurei." January 28, 1838.) The People's Tea. Our readers may perceive, by referring to adTerttsing columns, that under the above heading Messrs, Stephens and of 2 Parliament-street, Dublin, offer for sale a quantity of tea at 2a. per lb. We have been favoured with a ample for trial, and our opinion asked regarding its quality.

We must say, that oonsideriiig its cheapness, it is of excellent flavour, and when its good qualities are ascertained by a trial, we nave no doubt but its present consumption wiU be largely increased. (The "Wicklow News-Letter, January 25, 1868.) One of the most. If not altogether the most refreshing things In the world Is a good enp of tea, and when this can be had cheaply It becomes a matter of great importance as well as a great bleHing, especially to the humbler classes. We have tried the teas advertised by the Messrs. Utephens, and supplied from establishments at 2 Parliameut-etreet, and 87 South Great George's-street, Dublin, and can with conmlenee reconunond them.

When capital, skill, and judgment are applied, as in their case, exclusively to the tea trade, the public derive an advantage in lowered rates and better selected qualities. But from the prices we observe quoted In the London Tea Market, there should he no dif-flcuHy on the part of any respectable dealer In supplying good sound tea at and the nnost qualities at a shilling mora, (The Wortroeath February 8, 188.) Good Tea. Bad is a general grievance It is now in the power ef every consumer to procure really good tea from a Dublin firm ef high standing, who, from the 6 rut-class value they supply, are evidently "going in to win." Of this, we, ourselves, have recently had an opportunity of Judging, and it is, therefore, without hesitation that we endorse the higb opinions pronounced bv other journals on the tens supplied by the Ann in question, and which we believe they fully merit. Thsr tM st per lb. none better can he hd it esmbines all the qualities of a really ohotoe article, possess jM it does a rich aroma, delicious flavour, and mat strength.

(The Londonderry Journal," February 12, 1865) Btephens and Cws Tea, Several packages of these teas have leached us, and we understand a number of persons in town have ordered supplies from Dublin.
